technically there's one more line but I guess it doesn't qualify since it ain't 'forcing' but rather lingers on black making one specific move/mistake, but just for fun here goes... if white horsey takes pawn on d2, black rook retakes d2, white queen retakes d2 = checkmate in 2. \o/

@@WithmeVerissimusWhostoned that may work too, but for the challenge it won’t qualify

Trying to solve that one was like the old joke, “Before I was married I had 4 theories on how to raise children. Now I have 4 children and no more theories.” It would be more challenging if they gave you three puzzles to solve with the possibility that maybe none, one, two or all three could be solved in two moves. If that was the case I would have said this was unsolvable regather than blundering on and FINALLY finding the solution.

You have forgotten a very important square the knight slightly higher on the left as this also affects a square next to the king!!

I was convinced that Qh4* would be THE move! After blocking with the bishop, I would re/take it with the Q (checkmate). HOWEVER, I forgot that black can block the check with the pound instead. So, I am not up to the task!

I got it by looking for the double check realizing that was the only way to avoid obstructions by the queen and bishop.

Nice puzzle! Its best to do a mix of endgame and tactics puzzles. Its all about calculating the best candidate moves and combinations.

I got it and submitted about 6 weeks ago, so it's been a long wait for confirmation!

The deadline for submission was in the day i posted the video, so it wouldn’t get confusion or they would say something negative that i reveal the solution

I'm pretty sure the deadline was 31st July?

This may be hard to believe, but I actually suspected that the correct move had to be with the pawn on f3. I just wasn’t sure which direction to capture with the white pawn, though.

I was pretty surprised that I actually figured this one out. Two things caught my eye. The first was the potential for a double check with the knight and rook, and even before that the fact that all the other pieces seemed to be involved in penning the black king in. When playing it makes sense to always look for checks and other forcing moves, but how many mate in two puzzles start with a check? While puzzles are fun, on balance I think I prefer studies which highlight winning principles or pitfalls to avoid. Thank you for the interesting puzzle.

i definitely missed that, so looks like i wont be competitive for another year... or ten!. i was thinking 1.qh4+, to which i thought black was forced to respond with 1... bg3, but i forgot blacks pawns are moving down the board! so black can do 1... g3 instead to defend the reasoning behind 1.fxe4 is neat, but i'm struggling to understand why something like 1... qg7?? doesnt defend against the knight check(mate) and force white to delay for at least a move (sorry if im being dumb - im very much a beginner!)

There is no requirement to take the bishop what is he on about use the queen to checkmate.

Queen has three squares not two checks it also has h4

Didn't add that because I thought it was easily visible that it can be stopped with pawn G3, but you are correct, it has 3 checking square.
