Does it work for waxed wood or varnished wood?

I have the opposite problem. Laminate table top, spill went unnoticed overnight, now a raised area, any ideas for this?

Im probably too inexperienced to give good advice on that. Ive seen a few which have bubbled and raised and somehow have been slit with a sharp nice and refilled with glue...but its one of those jobs I'd be too afraid to try :-) Its funny coincidence though because my sons computer desk is laminated and he asked me a similar question today and we were both unsure what repairs can be done with laminated tables...but repairs are definitely possible.

It's good to see someone testing out internet wisdom :) I've never tried with pine, but on the guitar woods I use (mostly alder, maple and walnut) I don't have to resort to the iron. I liberally wet the area and walk away. That's usually enough (with sanding to tidy). This only works perfectly if the dent hasn't damaged any fibres and they're just compressed. Otherwise it can be visible.

I’m half tempted to really bash the hell out of a piece of wood…just to test the limits of the iron and cloth 😂

Will the wood finishing be damage by the heat from the iron and steam?

I'd also like to know this. Somebody ought to make a tiny little ironing machine that you can position more easily on cabinets that are standing up straight and have other reliefs in the near area. Provided it also works on finished wood, that is.

no. you can even use a heat gun with moderate heat.
