And not just the batteries. That pressure sensing capsule contains a capacitive touch switch. Just cut the top membrane off to expose the sensor. It can also switch quite a high current compared with those capacitive touch PCB modules sold for use in Arduino projects

You can blame current laws for the popularity of these disposable vape devices. The pod based disposables were better about waste, but anything flavored needs to be "disposable". I vape myself, and I've kept the old ones, thinking I'd start a project with them, this is the encouragement I needed.

A simple tip to prevent shorts which could be especially useful for people recovering these batteries: if you cut power wires, cut them to different lengths. This greatly reduces the chances of a short circuit. Even if you solder on new leads right away, it's possible for solder to break through heat-shrink tubing.

When I found out about these batteries some time ago I started collecting them, and asking people I know to not throw them in the trash. That was about 2 years ago. Now I have a collection of over 50 of these batteries! They won't last forever, and you never know what quality you get, so it doesn't hurt to have them on hand. Most are 500mAh, but some are even up to 1500mAh! And in those 2 years I only had 3 batteries that had a charge too low to be safe for reuse. Thank you for helping to keep these things out of the environment! If you plan on making battery packs with multiple cells, almost all of the vapes I got mu hands on were made of aluminium tubes. They are ideal for housing the batteries! Just make sure to clean then to get the smelly (and often addictive) out ;)

@@mattmuch7536If they are just too flat, yes. But a charger can't know if it's just too flat, or actually damaged. So to protect the user from fire, and the seller from major legal claims due to fire, they generally don't charge id the voltage is too low.

Many vape stores have an empty disposable collection bin. The shop keep at the one nearby just let me take the whole bin off his hands and i've probably got at least 70 3.7V batteries to harvest for various projects and he says I can keep picking them up every few days. Going to balance them in 4s packs that will happily plug into my existing solar array.

I was scuba diving and found 6 vapes in the same spot, probably due to ice fisherman. Anyways I ripped them apart and the lipo batteries were 0 volts, I charged them up and did a discharge test and all of them had 95% of capacity left over and have all stayed at or near 4.1v for 3 months afterwards. All these vapes were covered in 30 feet of water for probably 4-6 months and still work... who would have known. I have way better luck with longevity from 18650 lithium batteries since I have a couple of 20-year Pansonic ones that have been brought down to zero volts for many years before I salvaged them. They still have a third of their capacity and are really good for flashlights.

@BeckyStern, some disposable vapes even go with dual purpose pressure sensors, which can be used for charging. Here is instruction how to check, if pressure sensor is dual purpose. Heating coil coil should be unsoldered. Then we need USB cable. Black wire from USB cable should be connnected with black wire from sensor and battery (-). Red wire from USB cable should be connected with blue wire from sensor. Red wire from sensor is soldered to battery (+), let it stay there. USB connector should be inserted in charger port. If pressure sensor has charging function, LED swithes ON (when battery voltage is > 2.7 V), and blinks 3 times, when USB power is disconnected. Dual purpose pressure sensor has TC/CC/CV charging methods, maximum CC about 200 mA. If battery is almost dead ( 0.5 - 3 V ), status LED lihgts ON only after some time.

Thanks for this video! I think you confirmed my suspicion... The ones I've been seeing lately, even with a USB-C recharge port attached, don't seem to have any protection circuit whatsoever. They just rely on chargers, and USB ports being protected or something, I guess? Does a standard USB port on a computer even offer lithium battery charging protection?? 😂 I don't think so... I honestly don't get it, I don't understand how these things don't get overcharged. The ONLY thing I notice is two of the tiniest resistors you've ever seen, mounted on the itty-bitty USB-C board labeled R1 and R2. Idk what they could be doing, but I doubt anything overly helpful. Only other guess is perhaps they've somehow integrated some protection bits onboard that round air-pressure switch? Maybe?? But again, it's so dang small, I really doubt it. If you've got any insight, let me know (: Thank you!

If you know what you’re doing, this is a great way to use these batteries instead of using it to vape/smoke; and to not waste it in the trash. Also if you can’t use it, yes e waste recycling is best.

i find these all over the place on my bike rides, i find good ones that can be salvaged but most are garbage or at least recycled but question is where to take them at least in my area? its hard to see these just littered like garbage when both the lithium and nicoteen is toxic to the enviorment. i ever wonder how hard it would be to actually recycle the batterys when dammaged beyond use without catching fire of course

Great video Becky! Had no idea and something else to get angry about. Is lithium a finite source? No kidding these are kinda dangerous. 4:20 you can see tiny sparks as you desolder. (Would desoldering negative first cause the same spark?) Super smart to add connectors. Soldering any live battery to a circuit is risky. Mahalo for sharing! : )

Would have been safer to cut the pressure sensing capsule one wire at a time. And don't do what [Atomic 14] did in his video which was to cut both wires at the same time with the same metal wire cutters.

I need a bunch myself. I've collected a few 650mAh, but I'm looking for the larger disposables. I intend on using them for lighting passenger cars on my garden railroad. Been collecting them as I find them, even before bigclive posted his video.
@bornach
@bornach Жыл бұрын
The problem with the 650mAh ones that I've salvaged is that they are typically in those devices shaped like a Zippo lighter that have a USB-C recharging port on the bottom, but the recharging circuitry is very minimal - just a 4.2V regulator. So these devices have a large tank of fluid to atomise but come with a battery with too small a capacity to fully vaporise a full tank. The user would typically drain the battery to nearly 3V, recharge it rapidly to 4.2V, and repeat this cycle several times until the tank is empty. By then the battery has suffered multiple very punishing recharge cycles and so is very unlikely to have a capacity anywhere near what is claimed on the label.
@MarksGoneWicked
@MarksGoneWicked Жыл бұрын
@@bornach they rarely have the capacity that's on the label to begin with. I can load test, get a bunch of cheap BMS circuits, and they'll be more than fine for cheap electronic projects. My intention is low powered LEDs, more than enough power for a few hours of running trains at night.

There's very cheap Bluetooth speakers that have good chips inside but a very poor lipo battery. These batteries from vapes are perfect for extending the playback time many hours (because there's much empty space inside the speaker case tha can be filled with several batteries)

Hi! Great video! a lot of people in my city are using the Elfbars- can you make a video showing how to wire several of these batteries in series or parallel (whichever is safest) to power a guitar pedal? That would be a really neat re-use purpose! Most guitar pedals use a 9V battery.

Hello Becky, Are 16350 batteries safe to use in my rechargeable 16340 battery flashlight? Both are 3.7v to 3.6v at 700 to 650 mAh. The brand of the flashlight is Fenix, which comes with a 700 mAh 3.6v 16340 battery. I trust the fenix brand battery to not cause a fire on me as I have used them for over 10 years with no issue. I salvaged a battery off an elfbar bc5000 like you did in the video, and the battery it noticeably skinnier, but same length in size. This may be due to a cheap unprotected non-insulated cell?(layman here) The elfbar cheap battery is labeled at 3.7v at 650mAh. I recharged the cheap elf bar battery using a standard .5mAh charger. Is this safe to run in my flashlight or should i just drop it off in an e-waste container. I just do not trust cheap lithium batteries and that is why I am asking.

just make sure you adjust the resistor to make the charging rate match the battery-- a lot of the newer tp4056 charging modules you can get are defaulted to 1A which is too big for most of these batteries, and sometimes the SMT resistor is too small to easily replace yourself.

i added a bunch of old half cooked iphone batteries and salvaged vapor bats in parallel to some really cheap motion sensor undercounter kitchen lights. turned some cheap $1.40 lights that i had to charge weekly into an every other month ordeal and atleast the iphone batteries were thin enough to just slide in behind the circuit boards in the original enclosure. i wonder what the new EU law will do to these single use devices. it would be cool if you could pop out the batteries easily and move them to a new device since im guessing people go through these things a couple times per week. would lower costs too. i do know that many places have a rule on transporting lipol bats in freight where if the devices are single use you are allowed to charge them to a much higher level. kinda bad that we are incentivizing this.
