Thanks to Powerqueen for sending me this battery! I am not paid to make positive comments about this company, all thoughts and comments made on this product are my own! It works great. This is a great way to extend your runtime of this solar AC if you are completely off grid. I live in Canada and in June we just don't have enough sun to keep this AC running after 7pm, so this is a good way to keep cooling your house after prime solar hours.

Nice setup. Only one suggestion. Lose the high frequency transformerless inverter. It's not going to last. I've been in the inverter repair industry for the past 23 years and can tell you from experience that lightweight, high frequency, transformerless inverters are not designed for running inductive loads such as air conditioners, microwaves, power tools and motors. The reason for this is because, there is no buffer between the inductive load and the MOSFETs. You may be able to power your AC when the inverter is new, but after repeated cycling, usually less than a year, you will damage the inverter. Gauranteed.Guaranteed. A much better choice would be to power your AC unit with a low frequency, transformer based inverter. It will last far, far longer and it won't be damaged by this inductive load.

IMO DC Disconnect Rooftop Isolator Switches work pretty well. I am currently using 3 of them to isolate DC voltage in various areas (at the panels and again at the solar aircons). They are probably twice the price of an Amazon jobbie... but they get the job done while not feeling cheap. I'm sure there are better options out there, but I've had good experience with them and have seen pro solar installers on YT that use them as well. Thanks for your content on this mini split. I'm currently running one of the 24k BTU versions and am adding (right now) one of these 12k units to the other side of the house as well. Which is what brought me to this vid... which I'll now finish. GL and TY again.

A soaker hose or mister on the roof with an intermittent timer might make your overall system more effective later in the day and worth a try. I think it is something like 8000 BTU removed per gallon evaporated so you don't want any water to actually run off the roof. It is the phase change you are looking for and since you're solar powered harder to say how much it might help. Some factory roofs use mist systems .

Just mind that these types of batteries have a lot of air and foam inside the case, keeping the actual cells in place and that forms a pretty substantial thermal barrier between the cells and the outside. From what I've seen in my batteries and others, there are no direct contact points between the cell aluminium cans and the plastic outer case so pretty much no heat gets out. I am considering re-casing my packs in something more manageable that could be cooled or heated as needed...

If you are using the mini split to also supplement heat in the winter in cold climates, make sure you are buying one rated down to -22F. I have a Senville unit now 4 years, and it provided heat down to -35F. 24K BTU unit uses 2.5 kW heating, cheaper than propane right now. The color of your house and tree shading the house makes a HUGE difference too. I design and build hyper efficient homes w solar and can tell you a white house with some shading needs very little cooling. I might run mine 1 hour a day during 90F days. A dark house I helped build needs theirs on constantly, no shading. Senville 12K BTU uses only 950 watts/hour heating, less for cooling.

Your PV breaker is just the disconnect required by NEC (national electrical code) to cut the panels off when necessary for maintenance or other reasons. It is just acting as a switch, not an overload breaker. You should choose one with a large Amp rating say 63A as it is just a switch. Also it must be 2P as N.E.C. requires both wires to be isolated. I've seen some people put a one pole breaker in (especially in campervans) but that does not meet code.

The lithium battery does have a BMS in it and you can run it till its dead. If you have modern tool batteries when the the tool stops to tell you that your battery is dead, that is the bms shutting it off. I would gather that your panels are still producing electric and just not enough to power the unit on. If you were to double up the existing panels you will still be far under the rated capacity of the what the unit allows yet I am sure there is some over paneling that can be allowed as well. If you have double the power you should be able to run 1 or 2 hours more in the morning and at night. Such a good system.
@ebikecnx7239
@ebikecnx7239 11 ай бұрын
You can overpanel as much as you want as the load only draws the Amps it needs. You must only stay below rated voltages, such as for the MPPT controller.
@kameljoe21
@kameljoe21 11 ай бұрын
@@ebikecnx7239 I would think that yet MPPT controllers, all in on inverters and this solar mini split says that you can not exceeded the number of panels. My general question is why not. If you voltages are what the unit can handle then why can't I hook up 100kwh to something. If the solar array only pulls amps does it not have an amp limit? That is the problem is that they do not have an amp limit they will keep pulling and pulling till they can't pull no more. So if this mini split can pull 2950 watts at max and you have 5kwh of solar on the line then it should be able to hit max. Yet every documentation says that you can not. If I have a all in one unit that say peaks at 10kwh and I have say 40kwh on the mppt controller that only allows 20kwh then this should give me more power during off peak hours. The bigger the system the sooner it can provide power in early morning hours and evening hours. While one might say that you should buy a bigger or more charge controllers while that is true yet I do not need a massive battery bank to charge what I have is massive day time loads that I want to use and the more power I can get for a smaller system the more power I will have though out the day.
@ebikecnx7239
@ebikecnx7239 11 ай бұрын
@@kameljoe21 I am not familiar with this particular unit so cannot answer that, all I know is for example, on my solar shed with 1200W of panels in series (3×400W) I hooked them up in series to get 100V or so to stay under the 150V limit of my Bluetti AC200 Max. The Bluetti AC200MAX has an input limit of 900W (15A and 150V). Anything over 150V would damage the MPPT controller inside. There is more Wattage available on the sunny tropical days I have, but it can only draw 900W. So, I have overpanelled yet get that 900W from just after sun up till sunset. So, my Bluetti battery can be fully charged in an hour and a half, even if it went down to say, 20% overnight. On my channel the next video is a 20 foot sea container room I built, with a 1 ton (12000BTU) air conditioner. The air conditioner is a inverter mini split and will be cycling between say 400W and 900W as it has a SEER efficiency rating of 23. That means I will be able to run the whole container with lights, computer, fans and air conditioning on the little Bluetti AC200 Max.

This is a 1 ton mini split correct? The power consumption is excellent. I run 2 6k btu window units off of my solar setup and they use right at 600 watts each. So if you're a 1 ton unit you're getting twice the cooling capacity at less than half the watts. One idea is to make a battery bank with a high enough voltage to supply the EG4 with the voltage it wants and feed it directly from the battery DC without conversion losses. I'm not sure if the EG4 would be able to handle being connected directly to batteries though. But that's how it should be. My opinion... haha

I love the idea of the solar mini split but it leaves a ton of power on the table too. You can't have it all though unless you want to spend a good amount of money. I did mine the way I did because I picked up a bunch of window units in the winter for average of about $30 each. That's a big efficiency difference with the mini split and also having a heat pump would be nice. During the winter I just run a space heater which is probably half to a third as efficient as a heat pump... but also something I already had 🤷‍♂️

I like this method because solar panels are cheap compared to batteries, I don't mind dedicating 5 panels just to this with how affordable they are now. Nothing wrong with doing it your way, I just picked up a larger inverter so I'll probably make some videos on that soon.
@lancealderman2755

@SmitHVAC. That is true. What were the temperatures when you did this video? If you said you'll have to forgive me. My 6k btu window unit will run about 500 watts when its 85-90° and can get up into the 650 and even 700 watt range when it's 100-110°. Even still the minisplit seems to be twice as efficient. There's a lot of details, figures, and options I would have liked to have known when I was starting out...

@lancealderman2755 It was around 85f that day, we don't see too many days hotter than 90f here which is nice. In my other videos I beleive I show the Minisplit running around 800w. If I let the house get hot before turning it on, it runs hard until the house starts to cool down, then it ramps down to around 500w.

This is the subject that maybe should be talked about some more. For example, as I understand it, your home made inverter is probably losing up to 15% of the energy in the battery during the conversion to AC power, then, when once inside the unit, another inverter is converting it back to DC to run the compressor with another likely ??% tax. I know batteries up the price but there are lots of videos with all the battery people doing the DC to AC back to DC conversion. I realize they are probably running other things but for people designing this system from scratch and have more options I don't see this discussed much. Am I missing something. Can't we just configure batteries to feed DC power to the PV input on the mini split, or would the other MPPT controller between the panels and the batteries interfere?
@SmitHVAC.
@SmitHVAC. 10 ай бұрын
Its apparently possible to configure the batteries to feed into the mppt, you would need a minimum of 90v DC on the input. Meaning you would need an mppt capable of charging the battery bank around 100v Dc. It's more equipment than I have and Im not looking to void my warranty on this EG4 AC, but it is possible. This was more or less to show that you can run a standard mini split on a battery and a small inverter if you didn't have the EG4 version.
@Rock_Nemo

Just wondering on how you charge the battery, and also the BMS of the battery will protect it from low discharge damage, you really have no concerns with that, longevity could but your talking years down the road in which their is debate if aging will shorten the life first. between that and your inverter they will shut down if low voltage becomes to low to sustain the load.

Help me out please: I think I figured out from comments here and on other YTs that have reviewed this MS you cannot run it direct from batteries in series that are charged simultaneously by solar panels regulated by a good MPPT charge controller without voiding the warranty(?) Ture? So, in this case, you ran it off 120VAC (created by a 12-volt DC battery and pure sine wave inverter). Would it void the warranty if you simultaneously powered that 12-volt battery/inverter system with solar through a quality MPPT charge controller? Would it void the warranty if you did as the sentence just before stated and with another set of solar panels supplied direct DC from the panels to the unit while it has the "back up" AC provided by the solar charged 12 volt battery supplying the connected pure sine wave inverter? I am trying to figure out if I can run this thing completely Off-Grid in a way that works for me and does not void the warranty
@SmitHVAC.
@SmitHVAC. Жыл бұрын
I don't see an issue running it off of a pure wine 120v inverter, that is charger by solar and an mppt, as the end result is still 120v Ac feeding into the Ac input. Running it directly off of batteries to the DC input of the Ac would void the warranty I assume, it may be worth reaching out and asking the manufacturer, but I wouldn't recommend trying it.
