Do we think it might be partially explained by the parasocial relationships we form with entertainers through social media? Performers aren't these mythical things we see in rock mags or by looking up at a distant stage in an arena anymore. Everything now is about personality, interaction and buildng a connection with the audience and that's very important to how bands are marketed these days. It does, however, mean some fans feel more invested in these individuals as people. It used to be "don't meet your heroes", now it's "I feel I'm mates with my heroes".

Just checked LP still have over 240k monthly listeners on Spotify. So, unless they're all bots, I'd say there's a lot of people who consider their music a very guilty pleasure. I can't bring myself to listen to them anymore but I wouldn't bash anyone who did. With most things I can separate the music from the people but not with the former LP front man. 10:47

If I want to go and see a rock star, I want to see that rock star. It’s an alien being. I’m not interested in their private life 🤷🏻♂️

I think pretentiousness or being contrived would depend on the artist's thought process. Some artists obviously have a sense of false superiority to the target audience.

It's a very subjective subject, seeing as there are some sycophantic fans whose hero can do no wrong. Personally, I have no interest in the new version of The Wildhearts. Following the alleged treatment of Danny and CJ by Ginger. It makes me feel disappointed more than anything, that someone who was an advocate for fairness, equality, and everyone just getting on can act like such a dick. I still listen to everything up to and including the last album. Obviously, it could all be bullshit, but there you go.
@Richard-wt4vi3 ай бұрын
I've not heard any of those allegations, though I have always felt that Ginger is a great musician and probably a fundamentally decent bloke, he's also probably not the easiest in the world to get along with. I knew that it wasn't going to last long when they got back with Danny... I haven't paid any attention to what they've been up to in this latest incarnation though.

@Richard-wt4vi CJ was a bit cryptic about it on social media. He didn't go into details, but did say it hurt him deeply. Danny went no holds barred in his book, about how he was treated. Obviously, these are only one side of the story, but I don't know if Ginger has made any sort of return statement.

Genuinely can't listen to anything Ginger has done anymore. I was obsessed with that band for years.

@@80sobsessive maybe I won't look into it and spoil the music for myself, then! CJ is one of the only musicians with any profile who I've met (Blaze Bayley is the other, I move in A list circles...), and he seemed like a lovely person. Not that I can make any real judgement on that 2 minute interaction. But I haven't heard either side of that particular story...

@Richard-wt4vi Balze Bayley is an absolute gent. I encountered him in a car park when I was about 17, and had a bit of a starstruck gabble at him 😆

There's levels to these things I guess right? Is Dave the first to cheat on a partner in music? I. The world? No. Is it a shitty thing to do? Absolutely. Will he be the last? Definitely not! If his family can forgive and get past it, that's surely all that matters. And then yeah listen/don't listen. I'd say this differs from LP in that it's the guys lyrics and the guys voice you hear and the fact the "crime" here, is ACTUALLY a crime. Plenty of rock n roll stories involving drugs, booze, sex, which can also lead on to somewhat petty crime or worse(vandalism, arson, other 'explosive' incidents. I'd suppose the shorter answer, it boils down to the "moral breeze" at the time unless it's particularly extreme. Not an easy one to answer... But surely the LP singer and Glitter are at the high end of the scale where Dave is closer to the bottom. I dunno. Good subject tho. I'm not the biggest Bon Jovi fan, I've mentioned this elsewhere but that was pretty great to read and you're right, surely most of us would have done it. He was apparently making a music video and I dunno maybe he was asked to help due to his stature? Anyone doing the right thing there is a hero for me.

I saw the title and my initial reaction was: No - Pantera - Don’t care about new members, but I can’t go and see a band that Nazi salutes and screams white power. After watching the episode, I realize it was about Dave Grohl. And I am indifferent about his music or his love life. On the scale of Nazi to adulterer, relatively not that bad?

Dave Grohl? That's between him, his wife and whoever the other woman is. He's not broken any laws, so what consenting adults do together is none of my business. I'm not a big fan of Foo Fighters (or Nirvana for that matter), so it doesn't affect what I listen to. I do find it difficult when musicians I like decide to express political views that I don't agree with though. Obviously everyone's entitled to their opinions and mine are just as worthless as anyone else's, but if it's something I feel strongly about that we disagree on then it does colour my view of the music. And as for the guy you mentioned at the start... Didn't like the band much to start with, and nothing but sympathy for the other guys in the band who didn't deserve to have their livelihoods pulled out from under them. (And obviously his victims, though that shouldn't need saying).
