Impressive. I would skewer balloons without popping them as a kid with a balloon with 2 pieces of tape on opposite sides. Old magic trick I learned. Just had a thin hat pin. But you could pull the needle in & out multiple times with minimal deflation.

I had a science teacher in 8th grade that actually sharpened a knitting needle to the point where he could stab the balloon without popping it. He tossed the balloon up into the air and stabbed it with the needle. So I think if you were to replicate that, by sharpening a metal skewer to a fine enough point, it would actually be able to pass through it without issue. Now the trick here is that the tip of the needle is so fine that it doesn't actually rip the polymer.
