It would be nice if you could provide exact definitions for these puzzles, to clarify whether it's a math puzzle or a "lateral thinking" puzzle. In this case, the precise rules are "Remove N matchsticks so that 1) exactly X squares coincide with the remaining matchsticks, and 2) each remaining matchstick coincides with the perimeter of at least one of those squares." Relaxing either of those conditions permits multiple unintended solutions.

Exactly! You can "destroy" a square by simply removing one side. Nothing in the text indicated that this wasn't an option.

What happened to your famous math explanations? Come on, i had this one long before i saw this! First ask the question: How many matchsticks does it take to make a square? Using exactly four matchsticks, you start with one. To make a second square, you could use either 3 or 4 matchsticks, connecting at the corner, or using one shared side. To make a fourth, you need at least 2 more matchsticks. To determine how many squares you need to remove, you need to do some calculating. First, count the number of matchsticks, then subtract the amount of matchsticks you need to remove, which makes twelve. Divide that by the amount of squares you need, and you get, on average, how many matchsticks you need for each square. Since the result is 12, and 3 squares means we need 4 for each, which means none of the squares can be connected at the sides, or else you'd have 11 sticks with a remainder, so just look for the 3 existing squares that are connected at the corner.

Agreed - if the purpose of the channel is to offer insight into how to solve mathematical problems, the message of this video is that the way to solve matchstick problems of this kind is through direct inspiration, with the solution arriving fully formed in one's mind, rather than there being any way of reasoning towards a solution. There is a minor hole in your solution for the first question - the large square uses 8 matchsticks, so you need to establish that you can't add 2 squares with 4 more matchsticks in order to show that the 3 small squares solution is unique. For finding an answer, ignoring the large square and looking for 3 small squares that don't share edges is fine. For the second question, there are 6 squares total, and only 3 matches that aren't part of at least 2 squares, so only one possible solution - removing any other match would leave at most 4 squares remaining. For the third question, you're looking for 2 squares with 10 matches, so you know it has to be the large one plus two more matches to form a small one, which gives the four possible solutions - the large square with a small square in one of its four corners.

A) remove the top most and leftmost horizontal stick, and the topmost second to the left vertical stick(you only need to remove 2) If you wanted it to look nicer, you could remove the topmost second to the left vertical stick and the second to the top second to the left horizontal stick. B) you can just remove The rightmost stick C) remove the four sticks that make up the cross inside the large square

Before watching: (a) Remove 3 sticks to leave 3 squares. This is trivial unless we assume a rule against dangling sticks. To avoid dangling sticks, remove the two sticks from the bottom left corner, and the centre top, leaving three squares connected at their corners. (b) Remove 3 sticks to leave 5 squares. Remove the three sticks forming the square sticking out to the top right. This leaves four small squares which also form one large square, leaving five in total. (c) Remove 5 sticks to leave 2 squares. Remove the top right square, as in Question B. Also remove two sticks inside the larger square. This leaves one large square and one internal small square.

There's another one called "MOVE" 2 sticks to leave 4 squares. Have you done that one yet? For the setup, typically you would start with 4 squares and ask the person to make 5 out of them by moving 2. But it is fun to do both ways. Starting with 4 squares, the setup is a farmer has 4 animal pens for cattle. Imagine the matchsticks as fences. The farmer buys more cattle and needs a fifth pen to house them but there is no money left to purchase fencing. How does the farmer move 2 fences to create 5 pens of equal size to the original 4 pens using up all the fences. No extra fences remaining or removed. edit - I just realized my puzzle looks a little different and uses 16 matchsticks instead of 15.

Hey presh, I think that I have a funny question but I am still gonna ask. Law of gravitation is a force ((g.m1.m2)/r^2). And pressure=force/area. Putting together, we get pressure as ((g.m1.m2)/r^2.area). Does this make sense? If it does, then if distance is not=0 and the objects don't touch then how can they exert pressure on each other.

@sherlock fan on a scale balance with two pans, one on the left and one on the right, you can keep the item to be weighed on any pan and then adjust the 1 to 4 pcs of iron block on either pans. Say, for example, two of the pcs weigh 4 and 5 kya then by keeping both on the same side you'll ba able to weigh 9 kg whereas by keeping 5 kg pc on the left pan and 4 kg pc on the right pan and the material to be weighed on the right pan, you can weigh 1 kg.

JBTechCon JBTechCon That depends on how the squares are arranged. Having said that, there is a very simple observation and, that is, you can “delete” a square (formed with exactly 4 sticks only) by removing all the sticks that are not the sides of other squares.
