it's easy, the error is in the final, √x² isn't equal to x, it's equal to |x|, so: |4 - 9/2| = |5 - 9/2| |-1/2| = |1/2| 1/2 = 1/2

Why
@Vinickw
@Vinickw 5 жыл бұрын
*FAQ* _Why?_ Let's take (-5)² = 5², that's right, because it's equal to 25, so let's square root the 2 sides: √(-5)² = √5² the square root cancel the square -5 = 5 it is wrong, because a negative number isn't equal to a positive number, so, we need to take the absolute value |-5| = |5| 5 = 5 now it's right, so √x² = |x| _There's no x, he only used numbers_ x is any number, it doesn't mean that there's no x on the proof I can't explain the mistake with an x, I used it to make a generic case. _What means |x|?_ It's the absolute value, the absolute value of a number is the non-negative value of a number, so |3| = 3, but |-8| = 8. In the case |-1/2| = 1/2 and |-1/2| = 1/2. _You can't square root a negative number_ Yes, in the real set isn't possible to square root a negative number, but he didn't square root a negative number, he square root the square of a negative number, and the square of a number is positive, so it is possible to square root. Example: √-3² = √9 = 3 But if you square root before squaring it, you'll need the imaginary number, because there's no answer to it in real set. Example: (√-9)² = (3i)² = -9 _Why take the absolute value?_ Let's take a number x (that x ∈ ℝ), if we square it, x² won't be negative and taking the square root, √x² won't be negative too, because the square root of a non-negative number, will be non-negative; so √x² = |x| because x can be negative, but √x² no. Example: √-3² = √9 = 3 Observation: √x² is |x| just because the square is inside the square root, (√x)² is x Example: (√-9)² = (3i)² = -9 _Can't I just say √x² = √y² then x = ±y?_ No, becaus it means that x = y and x = -y, buth need to be true, and it is only true if x = y = 0, but you can say x = y or x = -y. _Why should I use the absolute value? Can't I just square it and then take the square root?_ Of course, you can do it, but people normally don't do √2² = √4 = 2, they normally do √2² = 2, but it isn't always true, like √-2² = -2, we can check it by doing √-2² = √4 = 2, it is just to make it easier and faster, it is pretty useful in big number, look: √-28955² = |-28955| = 28955 _日本語で何か_ ごめん、日本語を勉強していますが、まだわかりにくいです、だから我はあなたを助けることはできません。 *Edits:* 30 January 2021: Really thank you all, it was just a simple comment that I've made in 2019, I've never thought that it would be the most liked comment in this video, it has already 400 replies, it means that there are just 100 replies left until the maximum. 1 February 2021: It already passed from 20k likes, at moment it is 22k, thank you all so much. 8 February 2021: We reach 495 replies (it was some days ago, but whatever), the limit normally is 500, but it is giving an unknown error when trying to make a reply, I don't know why it happens, but it is normal in comments near to 500 replies.

Don’t read if you haven’t solved it yet On the 8th line, he simply square roots both sides of the equation from the 7th line. (4 - 9/2) ² = (5 - 9/2) ² DOES NOT simplify down to 4 - 9/2 = 5 - 9/2. If you are solving for a variable and reach a square root, then the square root of a positive number is ±, not just the positive value. Good job if you found it 👍 EDIT: For example, (-1) ² = (1) ², but I can’t just square root both sides and say -1 = 1.

Should have noted down the line he did this, which is : (4-(9/2))^2 = (5-(9/2))^2, reducing to your (-0.5)^2 = (0.5)^2. Makes it easier for the next guy to see. That said, these are all kinda the same. The easiers ones divide by zero, many of the harder ones don't account for the two solutions of a square root (or the n solutions a n-power root can have, to be more general. It's not that hard to write one of those in a higher root.)

Ehhh not so sure. Say you have an equation: x - 5 = y - 5 Now add 5 to both sides: x = y No absolute value bars are needed. Im not adding the x and the -5 together, I'm simply rewriting the equation as to cancel out a term. He's doing the same thing with the 4 and -9/2. However, the real mistake is actually a false understanding about how to deal with parenthesis and exponents. In Pre-Algebra/Algebra you learn about a handy word called PEMDAS. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction. PEMDAS is the Order of Operations used to solve algebraic expressions such as (4-9/2)^2 = (5-9/2)^2 By PEMDAS, P comes first, hence you simplify what is inside of the parenthesis first. By evaluating the exponents first, you are breaking the laws of Algebra! Note: If instead the equation read (x-9/2)^2 = (y-9/2)^2, then evaluation of the exponents would be a completely legal step in the world of Algebra.

Hello ya all! You should see, the part when you wrote in both sides of the equal signal the term (81/4). You are completing squares! That makes you add a spurious solution, which is 0=1. The equation is not linear anymore, but It's second degree! In the final part, when you take the square root on both sides of the equation, we should have (4-9/2)=±(5-9/2). Taking the minus signal leads to: 4-9/2=-5+9/2. Then, we have: 4+5=9/2+9/2. Therefore, 9=9, the right answer.

Mistake: square rooting gives two values, positive and negative. For example the root of 4 is both +2 (2x2=4) and -2 (-2x-2= 4). We can rewrite (4-9/2)^2 as (-0.5)^2 and (5-9/2)^2 as 0.5^2, both of which square to 1/4. This square roots (obviously) to +-1/2, so you have +-1/2 = +-1/2

WAAY late, I know. But still.... Here's the answer: *4 - (9/2) =* *4 - 4.5 =* *(-0.5)* Meanwhile *5 - (9/2) =* *5 - 4.5 =* *0.5* Now, of course, it _is_ true that *(0.5 ^ 2) = ((-0.5) ^ 2)* as in the video, but that _in no way_ implies that *0.5 = (-0.5)* Which is where the flaw in the "proof" lies. This is why it's important to say that if *(x ^ 2) = (y ^ 2)* then *x = ± y* instead of simply *x = y*

x ^ 2 = y ^ 2 -> x = y is wrong. x = + - y is right. Cause: x = + - square root (y^2) -> x = + - y So: (4 - 4,5) ^ 2 = (5 - 4,5) ^ 2 -> 4 - 4,5 = + - (5 - 4,5) sol 1: 4 - 4,5 = + (5 - 4,5) -> 4 = 5 (paradox) sol 2: 4 - 4,5 = - (5 - 4,5) -> 4 - 4,5 = -5 + 4,5 -> 4 + 5 = 4,5 + 4,5 -> 9 = 9 (is only correct solution). Thus, the solution you chose in the video is paradoxical. Whenever there're expressions of potentiation on one side and the other on the =, be very careful to remove such potencies.

Remember that a square root always has two roots: a negative one and a positive one. It's often (mistakenly) taken for granted that there's only one root, the positive one, and errors like this proof happen. In this scenario here, 4 - 9/2 = -(5 - 9/2) and -(4 - 9/2) = 5 - 9/2 Because √(4 - 9/2)² = ±(4 - 9/2) and √(5 - 9/2)² = ±(5 - 9/2) So no... 0 ≠ 1

You must not square root, you must simplify first because there is no variable inside. (8/2-9/2)² = (10/2-9/2)² (-1/2)² = (1/2)² 1/4 = 1/4

Yahav Nitzan You’re wrong. You can just as easily set the quantity in each brackets to a variable them square root but applying an absolute value. It would be the same as not setting them to a variable.

This works too. Although using the explanation of square root solution is |×| also works mathmatically.

Omar Moemen Yeah that's what I meant, it's that we're rooting (if that's even a word, I'm not a native speaker) both sides of the equation

Evanescence_1981 not sure if you're looking for suggestions, but you probably want to say "taking the square root of both sides." You can say "squaring both sides" for raising the power, but I've never heard anyone say "rooting it" when talking about math(s).
