I did this as a gift about 10 years ago from a squirrel corn cob and it still looks great! I used a ca finish on it.

I did the same had to goto a larger pen. I invested in a vacuum sealer going to try with smaller again but shoot a insulin size needle full of thin CA down the soft part then put it under a vacuum to see if it holds better when drilling. Great looking pen. I'm going to try the dye next time. Just finished a cedar gavel myself!
