My favourite strat mod is throwing a tele bridge pickup in there. You need to modify a strat to make a tele pickup fit though.
Is it worth the trouble? Will a strat turn into a tele thanks to that? What do I need to mod on my strat?
Find all the answers and more in the video. :)
Enjoy!

You've really got a great sound there! The Tele pickup is so beefy and huge sounding compared to a usual bridge Strat pickup. I think you've come quite close in the sound too... sometimes I almost couldn't tell the difference. I can imagine that it still feels quite different to play them though.

I like the new Fender Yosemite pickups, the bridge is super hot at around 9k. And the Performer Strat that they come with also allows you to have the neck and bridge on together, which to me get a more Tele like tone than any other mod on a Strat.

That Tele pickup in your Strat is so aggressive. Really love it. Strat pickups are so mild compared to Tele pickups. I’m a P-90 and PAF output humbucker guy but been thinking of getting a Strat, but I was looking toward a Silver Sky. Love Mayer’s sound for Strat tones and there is no way I could afford the semi-hollow he plays with Dead & Co. lol. Love the videos and as always, much love from Tulsa.

Just wanted to add that the metal baseplate under tele bridge pickups changes the shape of the magnetic field, which affects where within the coil more/less signal is generated. Signal close to the ground will have more coil length to cross before reaching the output, so that acts as a lowpass filter. (same reason a humbucker outputs less high-end)

Been waiting for this video since I first saw how you had modified that Strat. Great video. I personally thought there was an obvious difference in the first few licks, where the Tele sounded more Tele like. But as the video progressed, the differences seem to disappear to the point where they were almost indistinguishable. I wonder if any additional routing is required for a typical MIM HSS route. Seems like there should be plenty of space. Thanks!

Thanks for the demo! I was planning to try this myself, but I wanted to make sure that it would sound good. I wish I could find a video where the wood types (body and neck) are matched so that the effect of the pickup swap was better isolated. Of course, there is still the bridge and routing differences. Nonetheless, I'd call it a success - especially when there is some dirt in the tone.

Kris, I never liked my strat bridge pickup. Your video inspired me to install a tele bridge pickup. I settled on a Seymour Duncan APST-1 Twang Banger that sounds like a tele but it's in a strat shape. It sounds great and didn't require routing the body.

I made my Strat an HSH just a few weeks ago, with SD Hot rails in the bridge and cool rails in the neck, and I'm loving it. I'm now on the lookout for a better middle single coil though, because the Fender Noiseless just sounds weak and lifeless when switching from the rails. I've also put a coil split on the neck pickup and made it a master tone. Oh, and it's a Deluxe Player, so it's got the little push switch to add the bridge pickup to any position. With all 3 on it sounds fat AF.

I'm putting a Tele bridge pickup in my Squier Bullet Strat hardtail and it's mounted with the single screw towards the bridge and the two screws towards the middle pickup without having to route the cavity wall of the swimming pool routing and by it being a reverse wound reverse polarity (RWRP) pickup, I simply removed the regular wound neck pickup, moved the RWRP to the neck position and the bridge PU to the middle. In addition to three Teles, this was the best choice out of four Strats especially being a hardtail.

Thank you for this video, Kris! It gave me the courage to exchange my Strat's seldom-used bridge pickup for a 64 Tele bridge. I had to elongate the pickguard hole but maintained the Strat's pickup angle. I've noticed that the pole pieces stick out somewhat beyond the 1st and 6th sting. How big of a difference does this make? Would you recommend buying a custom pickguard with the correct Tele angle?

Hi Kris, great video! I think it would be interesting to do a comparison between a tele bridge pickup and a strat bridge pickup with the same spec as the tele pup (same magnets/wire/wounds). In that case the only difference would be the base plate. If it sounds close to the tele pup it would be alot easier to swap (no routing/ new holes). I dont know if such pickup exist or if it has to be custom ordered.

I even created a special Lullaby for my Son using those "chords", which I sing to him almost every night since he's born just over 4 years ago, while playing along with my Acoustic-Guitar. And as he heard you playing the chords over the speakers, he recognized the melody immediately saying "Papa.. das ist mein Schlaflied" Is this from something more or less famous I just don't know about? I stumbled over these "chords" by just trying random things. funny story at the end: Junior just said you toke away his song and now he can never go to bed and sleep anymore ;-)

Hi Kris, interesting comparison,🤠 here 2 questions: - Does the Teles baseplate work similar to the ashtrays on older Fender basses pickup magnetic field? - Opinion about Neck + Bridge pickup combined on the Strat?
@klodianberisha9696
@klodianberisha9696 2 жыл бұрын
The baseplate does not interfere with the magnetic field whatsoever. The metal it's used is non magnetic,such as brass, copper , stainless steel ect. The reason why the baseplate is installed underneath the pickups is to collect the sound bouncing out of the wood,to improve tonal qualities. You can super glue stainless steel baseplate under your strat pickups and you will notice a huge difference. The tone will be three times more powerful because any tone strat gets, it's produced by pole pieces. By adding a plate,you are adding 18 more pole pieces.

Planning a Strat/Tele Hybrid...but I'm going hard tail with a tele bridge and bridge pickup. body is routed HSS and I can't wait to see if the tele pickup fits

Funnily enough l am going the same.just had Tele bridge delivered,filling the trem holes with mahogany plugs.thought of doing Tele pick ups bridge and neck and perhaps a hot rail bucker in the centre.not done much soldering electrics before but a strat 5 way switch should accommodate that I think.will be cutting the strat scratch plate down to fit Tele bridge next.good luck with yours.

Funny I got HSH pickup cavities on my strat while having an SSS pickup config, so if I were to put a tele bridge pickup in there, I wouldn't have to worry about that But... change of plan: I'm gonna put a HSH pickup config in there (will need a HSH pickguard, I'm not gonna try andextend those holes in the original pickguard) with a hot rail in middle position (with both coil split and parallel/series switching for each pickup (yes, it's possible to do that, but it will require some drilling for extra switches))

If I was doing something "different", I'd consider Vintage P90 neck, 5-2 style Strat mid, Filter'Tron bridge. But right now, I'm doing a quick hack on my T style Butterscotch Talman by adding a Strat mid and updating the wiring.

I’m really parcial to a triple single coil , à-lá Nashville Tele, but i’m torn between assembling one with a Strat neck PUp OR one with a Tele neck PUp. How did your Talman turn out ? i’m thinking of building that parts-caster off of a G&L. And yes, i’d go for a similar “something different”. in fact i had thought of sth along those lines myself. Duesenbergs or Gretsch Filtertrons are outstanding..and a P90, specially in the neck, sounds incredible too..although ..with some dirt, they sound fantastic on the bridge position too.

My favourite Strat pup so far is The Chopper (DiMarzio). Problem is, I did not really understand, how to make Strat with traditional pups sound good. Classic strat is just not guitar for low volumes, you have to have your amp cooking and thats where Strats shines the most. For quiet playing Tele's or 335 are much better.

Hey Kris! This is an interesting concept I may have to try. I have an Affinity Strat I mess with for trying things out on. Do you think the results would be similar? It sounded great! The pickup position, if closer to the jack, shortens the distance the trons have to go so the tone is different. And of course the type of wood the wiring runs through modifies the tone as well. ;) Great vid and thanks for it. Be well!

Hey, Kris. I’m watching this video for the third time and I’m still not sure about what did I hear here. The strat definitely doesn’t sound like a tele here. Is it even possible to get the tele sound out of strat body? I have a strange idea. What if we take a blank strat body without bridge and springs cavities and put tele bridge on? Would it sound like a proper tele? Or jack plate is going to ruin everything
