My collaborator used it to write a chorus, and brought it to me with a chord progression. It was in 3/4 time and that fit the lyrics. So I worked on the melody changes a couple chords and we have a song with the lyrics my 83 yo brother wrote. He is so happy, and so am I !! I'll see if I can play some on your site.

Fun experiment Erich. Interesting, but . . . In some way AI seems to counterfeit human creativity. A deep dive into thinking, “why use AI to do that & deny an individual human’s intuitive self-expression in the effort, & sometimes struggle, to strike magic with their own musicality?” Did that songwriting feel passive or engaging? How much of your creativity was sparked? Did your soul feel rewarded with the outcome? Did you feel as if you were communicating yourself to others? Thanks for sharing it anyway.

I still remember about 10 years ago a gentleman told me about a program he called IBM Watson that was writing music and was the revolutionary superman to all songwriters and music producers. I am as disinterested for it now as I was then. I am so sick of “can AI do your craft” videos. Now that I’ve said that, I do also want to say that this question occurred to me when considering using loops in my song. It saves a lot of time and I love that, but also wanted it to be unique and therefore would need to alter the loop considerably to avoid it being used by another.

Hey Eric, I took a class on ChatGPT awhile back and already started playing around with this. Did you know you can tell it to write lyrics from the perspective of your favorite songwriters? I gave it a subject matter and told it to write lyrics as if it was Springsteen. Then I had it go back and critique the lyrics as if it was Springsteen. Try it out, it blew my mind lol.

Firstly, you're so great. I've been wondering what working with ChatGPT might be like. I haven't tried it yet. Now, I know. Secondly, I'm not sure I'd call that "anthemic"-especially since you're playing an electric guitar. I'd have gone Bon Jovish or Bostonesque all over that. I'm not sure it would include either that chord progression or strumming pattern. Third, my big concern with using ChatGPT is that it sources its responses from the internet and material already in existence. While I'm uncertain of the likelihood, beware of plagiarism.

Interesting, a lot of people are worried about AI. It needs to carefully managed. What are the chances of that? lol. But I also think it can have real potential to enhance our lives. Chat GPT is like having an expert in your pocket. You wouldn’t fault someone for consulting an expert while writing a song so I don’t see why there would be any controversy over using this tool. I think the perception is that it writes content for you and that it’s cheating, but I don’t think that’s what actually happens. It’s a tool that really takes input and direction that can help you get to a desirable outcome quicker. The trick for writing music for me has always been getting my thoughts down before I loose them and the chat program helps me with that

That was fun! But I don't think Melissa Peirce is losing any sleep. You got your Four Famous Chords, the world's most popular strumming pattern, and some moon-june-spoon lyrics. No offense ChatGPT, but that is exactly like something I would write. Under the covers, this is a fancy version of rolling dice to generate algorithmic music. It uses a whole lot of dice (literally billions) and needs a whole lot of examples (training data) to learn from. Given that, it works pretty well and can generate new things based on what it has seen before. But there is no insight or understanding. It does not grok our emotional associations with the Moon in June, or why we are so fond of those four chords. It just learns patterns that it sees. People are going nutty over how this is the end of creativity, but I see it as yet another tool. It will be used as a starting point, as inspiration. But you are still going to need a human to smooth down the rough spots and make a finished product. Pretty much exactly like Erich did in the video.

ChatGPT will be sending you computer generated Cease and Desist letters written in ChatGPT legalize for copyright infringement on the song it wrote. It wants all the future royalties, your left arm and your 1st born child as a down payment. Me? Why write a song? I just told ChatGPT to compile a list of the songs it's helped write for famous people. I'm having ChatGPT copyright all those songs in my name now. All I have to do is wait for one or more similar songs to get recorded and then ChatGPT will inform me of the copyright infringement and I can collect my spoils of war in the modern song industry.
