After I hammer in my masonry nail into the soft part of brick, it slides ride out! How do I get it to stay in?
@FixitFingers11 күн бұрын
Hmmm that sucks. Likely nothing wrong with the nails, the brick might be too soft or crumbly for them. Have you tried the mortar? It'll usually work as long as what your hang isn't too heavy.

Seen these in Bunnings but never tried them. Did not expect them to work so well, that’s awesome

Hahaha take 2. Let's try the right button this time 😂 Like I said to Sumo they did the job I wanted them to do so I shouldn't complain, but I'd be happier with them as a product if I could get them into red brick like the label says. Besser Blocks like your workshop I think they'd work fine, not as dense. You should give them a crack!

Great video. I still remember vividly as a kid, we were getting an extension on our house and the builders had a Ramset nail gun that fired straight into the concrete and then spat out a small bullet casing type thing. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, i'd go along and pick up all the shells.

To fix into brickwork or concrete, younneed to predrill in brickwork with masonry drill to size or just below diameter of concrete nail and hammer to depth required
@FixitFingers3 жыл бұрын
G'day guys. You are exactly correct. However if I'm going to break out the hammer drill, I'll use plugs and screws and skip the nails. These I think are best suited to light duty work when they can save you the fuss of drilling.

I'm a fan of their wall anchors and bolts, but must admit I was hoping for a bit better result with these. They did they job I needed them to do but the packet said suitable for bricks and I just couldn't get them to bite.🤔

No mate sorry, they are designed for light duty work. Picture frames etc. TV would be too heavy, go with wall plugs and screws or anchor bolts 👍

I spotted them by accident and had to give them a go. I didn't have besser blocks but I think they'd probably work great in them if your workshop was made of them. Otherwise good mortar seems to be the best. Let me know how you go.

I'm guessing guys , that these nails would work in fresh concrete, if you pour footings come back the next day when it's still green , it will go in , but I'm skeptical about gone off concrete

Yep that concrete I tried was 50 years old, they chipped it away but wouldn't go in.

Given that neither nails nor masonry are compressible to any significant degree, one would have to wonder how the volume of any successfully place nail is being accommodated.
@FixitFingers2 жыл бұрын
I have wondered the same! Im an analytical chemist, not a material chemist, but you'd have to think there is a core and sheath system of some sort going on here with the nail having a hardened chiping point and slightly malluable outer layer to allow progress into the masonry. I'd call it witchcraft, but they don't work that well :P hahaha
@sylviaelse50862 жыл бұрын
@@FixitFingers I reckon there is a very thin coating of steel, over two layers of PTFE, between which there is some fluoroantimonic acid. The outer layer of steel and PTFE scrapes off at the tip as the nail is hammered, and the acid is released to burn a hole in the concrete, allowing the rest of the nail to slide into the now hollow space. Not sure why it doesn't come out again, though. Of course, I could be completely wrong.
@FixitFingers2 жыл бұрын
From a bit of googling it looks like they are nothing more fancy than hardened high carbon steel! Probably why I only really had success in bessa-block and morter. There would be enough air in those to be compressed. The Ramset nail gun fires them directly into real concrete... the force behind that thing must be massive!

Thank you, how can a board be hung on a concrete wall without mortar?. Another option may be to drill a hole in to the concrete using concrete drill. Then drive a wood splinter tight in to the hole in the the concrete. One can now nail the board to the wood in the concrete
