@bow-tiedengineer44532 жыл бұрын
I think you might have been able to do better with a spaceplane. Make a spaceplane with the mammoth engine, use it to deliver a large empty fuel tank to orbit, transfer any excess fuel into that tank, then keep doing trips until you fill up the tank. Then ditch the plane, attach the capsule and engine to the big tank, and away you go. I might try this myself.
@Jack-dd3kn2 жыл бұрын
I'd be willing to bet that you could do it with a rapier as well. Might even get it in one launch if you do some mining on Minmus or Gilly.

The solutions you come up with recovering the engine is mind blowing lol! One rover is missing something instead of making a kerbal fixed it you just build another rover with even longer electric battery cylinder and attach a rovemax wheel onto it so it doesn't scrape the ground the next time you drive it lol

A much more boring but efficient way to do this would be a twin boar engine with some drop tanks. It has really good TWR and it has a built in fuel tank. You could probably get to moho with less than 20 parts.

Whenever you make a spacecraft using rapiers, make an airplane. Start in airbreathing mode, and once you get off the runway, fly straight and level until you get to at least 440 meters per second, then pitch up to 20 degrees on the navball, then fly to 10km. Then, at 10 km, level out, and fly straight and level, and let the curvature of Kerbin fall away under you, and fly until you reach 20km. Once at 20km, switch to closed-cycle (oxidizer) mode, pitch up to 45 degrees on the navball, then burn until your apoapsis is at 80-100 km above kerbin. At this point, you can shut off your engine, align yourself prograde, and coast to apoapsis, where you burn to circulize. Now you're in Low Kerbin Orbit. Hope this helps in the future! :D
@Eis_2 жыл бұрын
One idea would be to use an "upside-down" staging: Basically, instead of removing bottom stacks as you stage, like conventional rockets, you do the opposite by removing upper stacks as you stage. Or, you could also just put the engines radially on the top-most stage and discard the bottom fuel tanks as you stage.

With cranes like that you really should consider using the KAL robotics controller. It'd save you a lot of headache if you need things to move slowly. Additionally, though I could understand avoiding them in this specific case because they are technically engines, but if you remove the fuel from the tall SRBs they make really good structural parts for long or tall things.

Well, mammoth engine are four engines, not one...
@TlalocTemporal2 жыл бұрын
Rocket engines are usually counted by turbopumps, not combustion chambers. The Atlas V first stage engine (the RD-180) has dual combustion chambers and nozzles, but only has one turbopump and one set of fuel piping. That being said (and just having looked it up), the Mammoth is in fact 4 Vector engines strapped together. It's lighter than 4 Vectors, so there's presumably some shared hardware, but it actually is 4 engines!
@1mariomaniacАй бұрын
@@TlalocTemporal plus the Mammoth is significantly cheaper than 4 Vectors (39,000 for a Mammoth vs 72,000 for 4 Vectors). so it is very likely that each vector shares lots of it's hardware (such as electronics and gimbal control)

I've managed to get to Moho with one engine. I don't remember how I did it besides the fact that I picked an engine that had a ton of thrust but was very efficient when you barely used it. I've also used the mod that gives you pure electric engines, but the Issue is that if you use good enough solar panels, you would effectively have infinite fuel. Therefore, you could use batteries as your fuel source.

Air breathing mode needs air to work... When you get higher in the atmo, there is way less air to breathe. So take a bigger air intake that will work better at higher speeds (Shock cone is the best) Also, those engines are made for spaceplanes, not rockets, otherwise you would need boosters to give enough speed for the engine to work
