Can your employer track you? Lake County man fired after company’s app detected him at competitor

The day before Thanksgiving, tow truck driver Gary Leady sent a text message to his employer claiming he needed to stay home to care for his kids because his wife was sick.

Never going to work for a company that does this unless they provide a work phone for free that i can turn off when not at work

His employer is out of line. He shouldn’t have been monitored on his day off even if he went to a competitor company.

I've done this. My time off off clock I can do whatever I want to do. I've called in sick n went to a interview. Was hired n quit other job that day. Too many places hiring for me be unhappy at work

Yea man ever since Covid it’s like everyone wants to invade your privacy and what I feel like is violate rights. Put a gps in the work vehicle!!!

If employers are tracking the employee's whereabouts in a company vehicle, then the vehicle should have the tracking device, not the employees personal phone.

There's 11 such apps on the phone when you buy it you were tracked from the moment you turned it on it was assigned to you with the number no matter where you go or how you get there it monitors you the only way to shut that off is to turn the phone off and not use it till you get back home

No company should be able to track you through your personal phone. I think anyone who drives a company owned vehicle should have a tracking device on the vehicle, for the their safety and company’s protection. I think this company took advantage of the app because they suspected he was lying.

No it’s not and that is over reaching the employer should not follow anyone sexual harassment and possibly worse if it’s an attraction with a woman. Seriously disturbing.

there should be no issue tracking assets such as delivery trucks owned by the business, but this shows the tow company considers their employees property, too. Employee had "attendance issues" before, so when he called in they decided to check his story with the ap. Wouldn't it be fun to do the same to the owner...put a tracker on his truck and create a report on what he did for, say, a week. How would he feel about that? Hmmmm...strip club for three hours on Thursday? Did your wife give you the money to go? Oh, and two visits to a private residence occupied by a single female? For an hour each time? Should I email your wife? Snowden blew up his life to expose how our government misuses electronic data...this is the crap he warned us about. And this is a VERY mild case of illegal stalking.

Yes our trucks could see everyone that goes to the mall for lunch for 2 hours , everyone who drives 55 in a school 🚸 zone, people who went home for lunch , got a hair cut on the clock ect Hvac mechanic Tallahassee
