Free market is bad? Wouldn't want people doing it better and for less. That would go against the whole evolution of bussiness and free competition. This should be a voluntary maple syrup insurance group similar to weather insurance for farmers. Not as a gestapo police org artificially keeping prices high and keeping the small guys out.

This "cartel" levels the playing field and prevents extremely large producers from flooding the market and driving down prices for the sole purpose of hurting it's competition. It allows for the distribution of wealth among multiple producers of varying economic classes, making "wealth redistribution" less relevant. Oil, for example, is not supply managed; The result is low oil prices put Alberta in the worst recession in 30-40 years. People need to understand that supply management is a good thing(less so for consumers than producers though) even if the government is involved.

the system helps ensure good prices for all producers, does the family want good prices and market stability or not?

The maple syrup federation in Quebec is acting like a cartel and under competition laws where I live this is not legal.. I see no issue with farmers using the product they produce to make value added products as long as they are not selling the raw material away from the cartel (if they by law have to sell the basic non-value added products).
@swiftset
@swiftset 7 жыл бұрын
there was very little information in this video. I understand that the federation is suing a few farmers, but not what the charges are. I understand that some farmers feel the federation is doing work necessary to maintain the maple syrup market, but not what that work is or arguments in support of or against that position. so I really learned nothing new of substance, other than that there is a maple syrup federation in Quebec.
@All_ions
@All_ions 7 жыл бұрын
swiftset by limiting the supply, the federation keeps price up and stable. it does so by hoarding the syrup from buyers. but if those greedy farmers are left alone they will produce more and flood the market thereby reducing price for all farmers and buy effect reduce profit.(Note this same reason is why crude oil prices is falling because american oil companies are flooding the market using fracking)
@swiftset
@swiftset 7 жыл бұрын
it sounds like they must also tell the farmers NOT to produce too much, or they wouldn't be able to afford to buy all the available supply to hoard it. so are the small farmers complaining about it because they're being told not to produce enough?

Umeaka Chiemezuo Emmanuel but the are not selling maple syrup on the side but processed products such as candies. What is wrong with that?
@Lieu3C4
@Lieu3C4 7 жыл бұрын
Normally those 'processed products' would be produced with maple syrup bought from the Federation: so they are refusing to supply all the maple syrup (as a farmer) then buying maple syrup back (as a candie producer): they are running two businesses, and doing it in the wrong order, so far as the Federation is concerned.
@KamiInValhalla
@KamiInValhalla 7 жыл бұрын
The says that producers cannot less the syrup on the market but to the federation right? But based on the video, I did not not hear that producers (candy producer in this case) must purchase from the federation. If that is the case, then what is the problem? It just as if I grew potatoes for Wendy's but took some to make fries for my own shop.

Everyone on the suppose Bandwagon now (even though most of them been selling Maple Syrup longer than most), cause consumers now want natural maple syrup and maple syrup products, instead of harmful sugar and sugar products. But these Greedy Pig making the rules (the price fixing rules) are trying to make sure the prices keep going up and no one independently under cut them in selling maple syrup on the market for cheaper (a fair market), by going around them and directly selling their products for to the customers.. So these Independent Honest Family Own Maple Syrup Businesses are a problem for these Price Fixing Scam Artists within this market, cause the Greedy Pigs does this within every market.

Sigh, leave it to the Quebec government to make good natural resources unattainable to the lower-middle class. I mean this year, the sugar cabins in our region jacked up their price for a breakfast meal, 2 adults and 2 kids to $45- $65 plus tax and mandatory tip , $10 for half a liter of syrup????? Although this video is directed towards producers bypassing the federation quotas for candy production, but how about consumers at the end. Hey Quebec u suck at helping the little people!!!!! Simple economics, volume means more sales which in turns more tax revenues. Whats next?? Quotas for bottled water??!!!!!

Over here in New York State we have an open market and producers are doing very very well. Lots of new equipment and technology being installed. There is a related manufacturing business located a few miles from my home, one of their main items is large sap tanks, They are loading them out on trucks nearly every day, these are tanks which average 5000 gallons. Can't be shipping those to unsuccessful maple producers.

So what Simon is saying is that if they do not sell to the cartel, they may not produce according to regulation. But that's literally every other agricultural industry that I know of. They all sell to non-government organisations yet still follow the rules.

Why are they being fined?
@trekkienzl2862
@trekkienzl2862 4 жыл бұрын
Because they're trying to make a secondary business independent of the Quebec Maple Syrup Foundation. The federation wants a 100% complete monopoly on all maple syrup products in Quebec so they can keep the majority of profits for themselves.

Believe quebec MNAs (provincial MPs) were bought off to write into law mandatory selling to the federation cartel. And anyone who says anything bad about quebec is a racist or anti-francophone, so federal MPs are silent or chuck it up to provincial matter (read: not it 🤫)

I dont get it...so why is the federation suing the company?
@Davidtalksaboutstuff
@Davidtalksaboutstuff 7 жыл бұрын
When you produce maple syrup, you need equipment. One of those pieces of equipment refines (processes) the product into the final product we consume, but most equipment is just tubes and other cheaper apparatus that they hook up to the trees. Now, the federation wants to keep maple syrup at a certain price. If one producer has access to a lot of maple syrup, they only need to buy a little bit more equipment, which doesn't cost much: this means they can flood the market with maple syrup at a lower cost, driving other produces (who produce a product that is essentially almost no different from one another) out of business. The federation wants to say these bigger produces; hey, please only produce and sell this much, or else you're going to put a bunch of other people out of business- this is actually bad for you! If you monopolize the market, the demand will go up, and for a short term that will be great for you, but as others see the price of maple increasing, they will become producers, even potentially mass producers like yourself, and drive you out, and the cycle will continue. Only by having stable prices and "just" competition can we ensure everyone gets their maple, and everyone gets to make a living off of it. There are some other consequences that happen when someone becomes the sole or few producers in a market, but this is sort of the jist of it. The company is not going according to regulation, so the federation is suing in attempt to stop them (they might not pay money as a conclusion, but instead promise to change).

@@Davidtalksaboutstuff This is the definition of capitalism. Producers still only get paid per litre and not equal to help all, but the cartel...err federation gets a steady cut. Socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor. Lovely. In maple syrup, canada has turned into the us.
