And at the age of 85 I am still here and have no regrets over those years. I also made sure that my 2 children worked during their teens. I understand that parents today are over powered by guilt because they farm their children out at such a young age but, on the other hand jobs for teens no longer exist ie, pumping gas, grocery store bag handlers and so on and for sure teens are not going to work in the farm fields.....thats is why Canada brings in help from other countries and why so many of our teenagers are in trouble!

Why are we allowing these blatant violations of Canadian labor law and pushing these people into virtual slums to occur? If men are being exploited with wage theft or other violations, just imagine how vulnerable the women are when faced with difficulties at insecure jobs or finding affordable housing. What about the people who are working under the table for less than minimum wage. What happens to them if they get injured on the job, how are they supposed to afford to be able to pay rent without access to benefits? Why are the perpetrators not being fined, jailed, forced to compensate illegally exploited workers, or deported? Why are people not doing anything to protect first world standards? If we want to be productive, we have to learn from Europeans who are much more productive than even many Americans, with far better work life balance, and who do not tolerate these third world practices that absolutely destroy productivity through burnout as well as destroy the ability to raise a family or find affordable housing. Canadians have tolerated these exploitative and often illegal third world practices for too long. It is time to reject them, and adopt and enforce European labor standards which have been shown to generate higher productivity with much better work life balance and more affordable living costs for both newcomers and locals. Just my opinion.

@coryr63592 ай бұрын
Slavery? maybe. but not in the way you'd think. Fundamentally, the way worker pay is determined under capitalism corresponds directly with market demand and labor demand. The mere idea of hiring TFW's to "fill in" when we have more than enough unemployed citizens looking for competitive wages, undermines the entire basis of capitalism as an economic system. Corporations LOBBY our governments to allow them to hire TFW's as a means of wage suppression, as they seek to add workers to the labor market with the goal of artificially lowering labor demand. There IS no labor shortage. Conceptually, when the capitalist cannot attract the workers they need, capitalism requires them to offer more money. Artificially "fixing" wage outcomes IS a form of slavery known as "wage slaver". Canadians have become enslaved by capitalists due to the wage suppression tactics that impoverish them. When the government yields to lobbyist pressure to actively oppress people, it is corruption in the highest degree. On the other hand, TFW's are OFFERED these positions, and they ACCEPT them. This is not slavery. They are seeking an advantage outside of their own countries economy. Abusive? Absolutely. and the owners/corporations should be held responsible.

As I agree give these jobs to the unemployed and pay them a living wage sorry but a lot of our unemployed in Canada are lazy and not sure where you live but I know where I live no student is going to spend the summer working on farms. Along with the fact that our produce is already getting so expensive it will only get more unaffordable if we pay people to pick our fruits and vegetables a living wage .. I don't disagree as I think there are so many jobs out there that we should putting the unemployed to work and stop paying them benefits to stay home and do nothing.

Odd I worked at a greenhouse for cannabis. The Jamaican outsourced workers owned their own house in front of the greenhouse. They paid pittance to cover the mortgage and taxes, as the entire house is converted to rooms, and shared bathrooms and kitchens. They sent the majority of their money home, none of them seemed like they were slaves. They seemed like they lived way better than me who had to commute almost an hour to work and barely afford the hotel I was staying in cause of my rennoviction....🙄

As a Englishman and someone who didn't need to come to Canada but was hired due to lack of skilled workers here is my take. I was a fomer temporary worker on a closed work permit and got permanent residence through a PNP. The issue isn't the program the issue is how many immigrants their are competing for jobs. As a store manager 2 years ago the program helped me be succesful and keep hires while i stuggled for staff. Now I'm in a better position and have way too many immigrants applying looking for a way to stay in Canada. These all have the same qualifications, degrees which mean nothing to the service sector, some experience in retail/food or security but offer little else to what my sector needs. The program neefs to be stricter and stop letting so many people to study here in fields which are not needed or offer little to the economy. I know if this program was taken away my City would stuggle again.

In my point of view, the sad thing is that once they become permanent residents the businesses allowed to hire new group of temporary foreign workers claiming they can't get workers because they cannot make money by paying normal wages Yet they reapply year after year and get more so not having skilled workers is in my opinion a ruse
@ianhowes81412 ай бұрын
At least foreign workers are prepared to work for a living, rather than just occupy a job position like many canadians! Oh, and by the way, the UN needs to mind its own F'ing business.

Really? Slave labour? Give it a rest. Are we heading abroad and rounding up folks to do our bidding? Or are they coming willingly? The issues are the loopholes that allow foreign folk to undercut Canadian citizens, due to lower pay rates. The world's poor being willing to work for scraps shouldn't be surprising....

It's also depressing wages, IMO. But without the "closed" status of these work permits, the appeal of the program falls apart. It's expensive to bring in these TFW's, but it's not all about the money - instead it's often the CONTROL that a business craves, more than anything.

Employers are using the program to hire people at a lower rate, and not hire Canadians. My son was unemployed for a year. He would apply to posted job ads, but the company wouldn’t interview anyone. They only posted the job ads because that is the only requirement to then hire TFWs. The program needs more restrictions and oversight.

This is very one sided. The question i have is why workers come freely from other countries to work in Canada. No one is forced to be involved in the foreign workers program. Being a farmer for 50 years and being involved in the foreign exchange program for thirty years i can truly say there is no salvary on my farm. Very important to understand how much the money these men make here in Canada help their families to live a better live back home. And i am talking about food , housing , medical etc. not luxury. All my workers over the years have been so thankful for how much better their families lives have improved back home. Enjoy your food today. Without the foreign workers you wouldn't have it. I know i farm. God bless 🙏

Question - are these workers paid at least minimum wage, for all the hours they work? Or are they paid a fixed amount for the contract?
@mikeeddington18032 ай бұрын
Canada's foreign worker program is basically a way for businesses to pay low wages instead of forcing them to compete for workers that are already citizens or permanent residents by paying living wages.

The agricultural TFW pick grapes in the wine industries, and now work on farms. As a teen in the 1970s the farm work, haying, and such was open to my city classmates who'd sign on for 3 weeks heavy labour. But what Toronto teens are going to live in a shack and bale hay in 2024? Or teens used to go north and p,ant trees after lumber companies took out trees,, or after forest fires to stop landslides. Hmm yeah not up our current teens type of work. Sadly the hovt IS hiring TFW for forklift jobs...now there is a skill the unrmployed could be taught, and hired for, rather than dragging people over from India to drive forklifts inside factories.

Yes in my opinion it is and 600000 a year temporary foreign workers which are promised perminant resident status then every year 600,000 new temporary foreign workers mean 600,000 jobs lost to Canadians who are desperately looking in addition to over 416,000 new immigrants per year who also need work a million a year we cannot sustain this Look at Alberta an increase of over a million people over last 4 years and no infrastructure increase to accommodate in medical system jobs or housing resulting in people dying waiting for doctors and hospitals and a significant increase in homelessness food bank use and Calgary has second highest unemployment rate in Canada. Not fair to newcomers or Canadians. I believe lack of insight by both Provincial and Federal governments is killing people.

Two years ago, employers were desperate for help, positions could not be filled locally. As for working conditions you can be sure that will be addressed. The work world is an awfully difficult environment to navigate these days. Harassment prevention training is next on this list. It should become mandatory for each and every employer and employee to participate.

Youth unemployment is because they don't want to work. I have seen it first hand. When I was a kid in the 90s we all had jobs in my community my two oldest kids had jobs but not one of their friends had an after school job or weekends but their parents buy them everything they want the school I work at the students have nicer cars than the staff. All of the employers here can't find students to work even paying well above the minimum wage which is 17 dollars an hour now. People need foreign workers but they don't need to treat them poorly those employers that do that shouldn't have to pay fines but they should have their assets seized then those cheap buggers will stop.
