Great comments. You were more generous to Canada than other analysts. Canada had so many chances and did not finish and they are occasionally mistake prone on defence. But they really did put their full effort into the game, as did Venezuela, but Canada was more fortunate with the penalty kicks. If Canada could just finish on some of their obvious chances the game would have been less entertaining. Congrats to Canada. They are proving their worth and their heart.

I feel for the Venezuelans. They played so well in this tournament. Their country was witnessing history and they had a great opportunity to advance to the semifinals. Canada has broken a lot of South American hearts this tournament. A lot of naysayers out there who continue to say Canada will be crushed by their opponents…and they couldn’t be more wrong. The experience Canada is getting from this tournament is immense. More time together, more games together and every step forward is making them stronger. Sure, they’re large underdogs against Argentina, but Canada has nothing to lose. They’re young, they’re athletic, they’re fast, they’re difficult to play and they’re learning Marschs systems every day. What a moment for Canada!

Agreed that hoping for Canada to upset Argentina is a bridge too far. HOWEVER, they will still get to play Uruguay, Colombia or Brazil for 3rd place. So those two matches are going give Canada enormous experience heading into the two NLs and Gold Cup they still have between now and the next World Cup. I'm wondering if there are any other big tournaments they could get an invitation to? Is anyone aware of an such opportunity?

Jesse Marsch has been coach for the Canadian national team for only two months , takes them to the semi finals. While Gregg the GOAT Berhalter has been coach for the US team for almost 6 years gets grouped . This is the same coach who got beat by Trinidad away in the gold cup . Failed to draw against Panama. A teams success is 50% coaching , 30% the players and 20% ( the organization/ front office / club board with or owner or with its CEO or club president) . Canada's win is huge indictment on Gregg and the US soccer federation for sheer incompetence . Come 2026, if both the US and Canada are placed in favorable groups and have good paths to the wc finals . Canada Under Jesse May actually do much better than the USMNT under Gregg .

David, Larin, Davies and Eustaquio - arguably their best 4 players - are still not firing. Just wait until they do! I have been saying since Qatar that Canada has a QF ceiling in 2026. I predict they make the R16 and maybe even a QF, depending on the opposition they come across. I don't think the USA or Mexico have a higher ceiling, so that makes Canada one of the top CONCACAF squads.

The David chance, the Larin Chance, Lareya and David on a 2v1 break and we didn't even get a shot off. There was a lot of missed opportunities for sure. But our squad is what it is. Raw, young talent not necessarily playing at elite levels. It's really hard to have composure when you're getting closed down as fast and as hard as Venezuela was so im not as critical of our boys as some people are. Im impressed with how we stayed composed when the ref was obviously screwing us. The break we had when the keeper put the ball out of bounds and then proceeded to grab the ball and delay the game when we could have thrown it into play and had a chance at an open net was effing insane to me. This is what I can't stand about concacaf and comnembol. There is absolute corruption, bias what ever you want to call it or its complete incompetence. Either way I was glad to see us beat Venezuela and the damn refs. Marsch has been a revelation. I love how organized he has the boys playing and has Davies playing in his proper position. It really unsettled Canada and led to a lot of turnovers, but Canada handled it well overall and was able to break the press often enough to generate some huge chances. Canada has already hit the point of deserving accolades. It doesn’t even matter if Argentina blow them out. Quarterfinal appearance in their first visit, overcame less than stellar reffing, overcame a defensive lapse that resulted in a goal against, overcame Buchanan’s injury, all they need to do in this next game is compete. Anything they do from here is icing on the cake; if anything, Argentina can’t afford to screw up, because if Canada beats them nobody will ever let them live it down.
