Hello you two, I just discovered your station about two months ago and it’s my favorite station. Peter, I can’t think more highly of a gentleman than I do of you. I love love the work you do, the life you both live, your history lessons. The Lord sure broke the mold when He made you, God bless you so very much for bringing peace, Tradition, nature into a very very dark world we have now. My 2nd GGF was a LT in the war of 1812. His family had migrated to GA after the Revolution from NC. I am older than both of you. I turn 79 this month. The only thing red I have worn is the red stripe on the sides of my trousers. I am of Prussian descent, too. I am sure I have had other ancestors that served in the War of 1812 - they were a pretty blood thirsty lot😊

The American Revolution is probably my favourite historical topic, and as a Brit, the Loyalists interest me a fair bit and I've been reading upon them a bit more lately. What I found interesting is how perhaps the majority stayed in the US after the war despite the hardships, with them and their children going on to often back the Federalists. I know only a little about the war of 1812, so I'll have to dig in to reading. I believe a friend of mine did his thesis on the war of 1812 being a continuation of the revolution, I'll have to read that too. Certainly seems that way. Thanks for the video, and nice music

I want to give you a piece of my story. I am Scandinavian, born in Skåne, southern Sweden. Someone in my family went to America but came back after a couple of years. I mean, I belong to the old tribe, then came the sixties, seventies. American movies music culture Harley Davidson shaped my life. America began with Columbus. Although when we played cowboys and Indians, I'd rather be an Indian. I am fascinated by your programs and am hooked on You Tube. but the further back we go, the more an "America" appears quite different. than what social history has to tell. Wishing you and your family a sunny day

Hey Peter! I always felt a wave of sadness when I looked over the border into Canada and thought about 1812 and what could have been. The best description I ever heard of the U.S. behavior in that conflict was, "They walked into that war with all of the overconfidence of a teenager in his first bar fight." A lot of mistakes were made... but we learned from them (We could hardly get worse!)... and applied them to future conflicts... to our benefit. I suppose the silver lining is the long, undefended border between us; the long peace that has held since 1814 (54 40 or Fight hardly counts), and having a staunch and proven ally that can be relied upon when the chips are down. That was a great song that was well played & sung, by the way.
@TheWoodlandEscape

Wholehearted agree with that conflict. I’m so glad it turned out the way it did, allowing us the diversity that we will forever enjoy. As always, thanks for your continued use.

Thanks for the history talk and great music! Growing up in Alaska, I seem to remember a teacher telling us that the war of 1812 was simply about "Britain trying to retake America". I don't seem to recall hearing anything about The US invading Canada until I became interested in reading history books later in life. A shame when history teaching becomes oversimplified and sometimes just plain untrue. Great shooting! Are those smoothbores with no sights they were hitting that metal target with? If I can get half that good with my Brown Bess Carbine replica I'll be happy.

Thank you. They were all smoothbore muskets and most of them Brown Besses. The lug for the bayonet serves as a good front site and they are not nearly as inaccurate as people think. It is a true shame how many teach history … it is so much more than regurgitating dates on an exam.

I really enjoy your channel. I've learned so much. I would interested in knowing whether many pioneer people had fire-dogs (andirons) and knowing about yours in particular. Also, I would be interested in knowing what materials (puke wood?) were used/carried for outdoor fire-starting prior to charred cloth being widely available. I suspect excess cloth for charring wasn't available for most people until the 19th century. Perhaps you'll get a chance to mention a wee bit of one of these subjects in a video. If you have already been there, done that, please disregard. Thanks. -Greg Mendell, Indiana
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape Жыл бұрын
Once blacksmiths were established in an area, most folks would have firedogs. The make fire building and burning much more efficient. Punk wood or Chaga were the go to for fire starting. Punk wood in the south and Chaga in the north. Punk wood was normally harvested from the interior of hollow trees, should be spongy to the feel. It was then charred the same way as making char cloth. It works very well.

Old Hickory, suggest to anyone one to read the history of the provocation that lead up to the war. British were beat back twice securing our Nation. Ended in a Geographical Draw, everything lost on both sides was restored. Except Kidnapped American Seaman. Madison caving in to political pressure didn’t help at all. problems came the the Crown “ the buck stops there “ U.S. Army at the time was too young and never trained to be a invading occupying force, except for a hope to expand American Liberty what could possibly be gained by the invasion of Canada. As far as Jefferson’s remark he was simply trying to impress the Press he had been out of Office four years at the time of his uninformed remark.

@@TheWoodlandEscape I use the term troops in the loosest sense , raised malitia, reservists, areas where the colonial powers did not wish to issue more advanced weaponry.and native police forces. I believe the French took much the same attitude. It was a time when revolution was in the air and the powers that be were considerably more nervous than they let on. Two hundred years though must be some sort of record for a fire arm. Of course the BB saw most of it's last campaigning in the American civil war.

I had the opportunity to stay in the historic Logan Inn in New Hope, PA, which was recently remodeled at the time in the early 2000s to mostly period correct furnishings. The Logan Inn, located in beautiful New Hope was established as an inn in 1727 and is the oldest continuously run Inn in Bucks County and one of the five oldest in the United States. By contrast to the frontier, the settled areas had some pretty sophisticated surroundings. The furniture makers and cabinet makers of the era were superb craftsmen. And the wood they used was far superior to modern lumber. It may be interesting to an arborist that the Logan Inn remodeling was done by family connected to the Asplundh worldwide tree services.@@TheWoodlandEscape

U R speaking of my youthful places of adventure, I grew up in St.Catharines, only 8 miles from Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-lake. How I loved 2 visit the battle sites and imagine away...I was truly blessed 2 enjoy such historical sites. You've made no mention of the wonderful; Laura Secord. I add then the 'wee bit' 4 the women heroines...her perilous walk of 22 miles 2 warn the British of the American approach, was of 'Great' assistance. She had such fears of the Americans killing her B 4 her mission accomplished...she had 2 strategize well her timing and method of walking. Now 2 embellish a 'wee bit' as U sometimes do good Peter...I wonder if her talents 4 chocolates perhaps were a means of 'persuasion' should she be approached/stopped/delayed? Something to ponder! LOL! Well done on the ballad Peter! Sir Isaac was humble, to be sure...I quote him; "If I'm good at anything , it's self-sabotage." Health and God Bless! :)

The War of 1812 split our family into Aylsworth/Ellsworth spellings. Some of the family emigrated to Canada, settling near Kingston. One member of the family, Tom Elsworth, fought on the American side at Sacketts Harbor. One of the Aylsworths later became a Postmaster General in the DeLaurier government.

Had 2 grandfathers, father and son, who took part in some of the fighting during that war. But they had nothing to do with an invasion of Canada, The father was a Revolutionary War veteran and with his Cherokee son they fought the Creeks at Horseshoe Bend. The father took a debilitating wound in a mop up action after the Horseshoe. The son was also wounded at the Horseshoe. Today the sons silver mounted rifle, presented to him by James Madison for actions in the battle, hangs in Horseshoe Bend Military Museum. He was known as the whale. His real name was Charles Reese. He went on to be a signer of the first Cherokee Constitution, a senator for Chickamauga district in the old nation and possibly a senator in Going Snake district in Cherokee nation west and helped the Moravians interpret the Bible into Cherokee. Because of internal troubles with the tribe, in which he had 2 nephews , a son, and an old associate and friend killed, he decided to go with a group of other Cherokees to find a new home for members of the treaty party in Texas. He contracted lung fever, died and was buried somewhere along the Colorado River in Texas in an unmarked grave. His father received a pension for the wounds he received in 1814. He also received a pension for his services in the Revolution but died before he could collect. He was buried in Tennessee. Old paper recounts, "buried this day, Charles Tasker Reese, a soldier of the Revolution."

@@TheWoodlandEscape I've never seen it either, only heard the story's until recently I was glancing at a forum on internet which featured old Indian trade rifles. The whales riffle was mentioned. They showed pictures of the rifle. Most of the information about the older fellow came from a single book. Most of the other info came from several books and an article from either the Cherokee Phoenix or Cherokee advocate. If you would be interested I'll find that internet article with the pictures and send it to you via the comment section.

@TheWoodlandEscape

Equally as bad, Hugh, on this side of the border. While we didn’t take their land by force, we took it through deceit. Then, like you we entered into residential schools which came close to wiping out the culture totally. There is a Hugh resurgence to get it back, thankfully.
