They started as the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, who moved to Canada but was originally from the US. Levon was with him first and the other 4 joined after. They were called the Hawks. Ronnie & Levon were both originally from Arkansas.

Richard Manuel had such a brilliant voice. The Band were lucky to have three great singers but I think Richard was the best of them. Was an excellent songwriter in the early days as well.

I love all of the Band members, and Richard was great, but Rick Danko is my favoritee.

Love The Band, Richard Manuel singing on this one. "It Makes No Difference" from The Last Waltz concert film or "Tears of Rage" from their first album are favorites.

Nice reactions to The Band's "King Harvest". Hard to pick a genre for The Band, even tho they're comprised by 4 Canadians + 1 American (Levon Helm) I've heard/seen them classified as "Americana". To me it's just great music. Keep digging, I'll recommend "Don't Do It" from Rock of Ages (live with horns).

The Band were great, they made their own sound, now described as Americana. Levon Helm was from Arkansas and the others were from Canada. Try the song Acadian Driftwood.

Great song from a great album. I think this clip is from a film about the making of the album. The Band created a genre of their own from a melange of musical styles that sounded as though it had always existed. That's quite an achievement.

You asked what style it is, well, today it is just called Americana

The Band are considered the 1st to be described as Americana if you want their category. Only drummer Levon Helm was American though strangely enough. They were highly respected, Eric Clapton and George Harrison both admired them, Clapton thought about asking to join, he wanted that feeling of brotherhood he saw in them. This was a demo really, the lyrics weren't complete as Richard had a small gap where he didn't have words.

Ironically (given 4 out of 5 members were Canadian), it's Americana methinks.

I’ve heard OF them but can’t name any of their songs . They sound like a very competent , polished band .. but it’s like Rap and House music to me , it just doesn’t appeal to me in any way . 👍🏴

This is minimalist music, they didn't even bother with a tune, oh no no no not for me, I agree they are good at what they do, but what they do , is mumbo jumbo to me , thank goodness ignorance is bliss 🏴✌️
