For those who are wondering what the difference between a rocket launcher and a recoiless rifle are, here is my take. The M72 is a rocket launcher because the rocket has its own motor to arrive at the target. The entire munition arrives at the target, self contained. With a recoiless rifle round, like the 84mm karl G, the projectile is attached to the propellant cartridge and the whole round is loaded. When fired, only the projectile arrives at the target and the spent cartridge (which housed the propellant), is unloaded and discarded. There is some confusion with the karl g because of the "rocket assisted projectile" name given to certain rounds. They both are fun to fire, but I prefer the M72. Chimo!

Unlike the flawed video of the Carl Gustav recoilless rifle, the M72 fires an actual rocket.
@sawmaster60954 жыл бұрын
In the case of the M72, doesn't the rocket motor burn out before it exits the tube? And assuming that's the case (which I'm pretty certain it is), how is it philosophically much different than a recoilless rifle?
@lib5564 жыл бұрын
@@sawmaster6095 Very different. The 66mm rocket from the M72 is a ...rocket. A tube stuffed with propellent and a warhead at the front end. It has stabilizing fins that pop out as it leaves the launch tube. The 84mm is like a big bullet fired from .... a rifle. The barrel of the Carl G is rifled - like a firearm. This imparts a spin on the round for stability. The M 72 is a smooth tube. But... I'm no... 'rocket scientist'...
@sawmaster60954 жыл бұрын
@@lib556 How about the 84mm AT4? That is smoothbore, has propellent and a warhead, stabilizing fins, but is considered a "recoilless smoothbore anti-tank weapon"
@lib5564 жыл бұрын
@@sawmaster6095 Like I said, I'm no rocket scientist. Although I know a bunch of guys who used them in Afghanistan, I've never shot one. As wiki says: "The AT4 may be considered a disposable, low-cost alternative to a Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle. The AT4 took many of its design features from the Carl Gustaf, which operates on the principle of a recoilless weapon, where the forward inertia of the projectile is balanced by the inertia of propellant gases ejecting from the rear of the barrel. But unlike the Carl Gustaf, which uses a heavier and more expensive steel tube with rifling,[16] the disposable AT4 design greatly reduces manufacturing costs by using a reinforced smoothbore fiberglass outer tube. Being a disposable gun also allows for lighter and cheaper construction. In a single-use disposable gun..." All I can say is a gun is a gun and a rocket is a rocket.... I'm just tired of people saying the Carl G is a 'rocket launcher' when it isn't.
@Cherubrmy4 жыл бұрын
@@lib556 Carl G also fires rounds that are propelled by rocket motors, thus it *is* fair to describe it as a rocket launcher, because it does launch rockets. The presence of rifling in the barrel has little impact on the nomenclature of modern systems, i.e the M777 Howitzers in Canadian service are rifled, yet are still called guns. The limiting factor is the ammunition in the case of the M72 LAW, it could fire "bullet" style projectiles as you called them, but its simply intended to fire pre-packaged standardised ammunition.
