Competition Performance - Finalist 1, Song 1 - 1st Place
The Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Championship
August 1, 2010
Loughborough Lake, Kingston, Ontario
Calum Graham from High River/Calgary returned to take top honours this year, after placing 2nd in 2009. This tune is an original piece called "Indivisible". It will be coming out on Calum's next CD in a few months. He has tabs, etc., and another CD that you can find out about here:
calumgraham.com
The guitar is a Stonebridge OMS25SC.
About the judging: The judges are mainly drawn from the main-stage performers, and the judging is done blind: judges cannot see the stage, and the contestants are identified by number only. Five finalists are chosen from a maximum of 24 entrants, who perform two tunes each. Each finalist plays a further two tunes. The judges this year were Don Ross, Antoine Dufour, Tony McManus, and Radio-Canada's Dan Berhman.

This certainly didn't appear to be the most technically difficult of the songs in this competition, but damn is it composed well and executed nearly perfectly. It's absolutely cemented in my head. Such a cheery tune...It's like the anthem to being on top of the world.

It looks like you can join PayPal at his web-site when you check out. The MP3+tab combo is $3.99. But I think "Indivisible" is on the new disk coming out in June or July if you want to wait. It will be a different version of course.

Eddie Herger It's all very subjective. In my opinion, I didn't really think much of these songs. Lewis and Clark definitely sets the western adventure theme/tone though very immersively..

Максим Задворнов That's basically all music since ever. Musicians always borrow from other musicians... if that weren't the case, we wouldn't have different musical genres. But cut the guy some slack, he's young. Also, this video is from 4 years ago, he's definitely grown as a musician. All in my opinion, of course.

MetalHearts100 Ben Lapps is not a guitarist. He's a drummer. He has decent original compositions, and some of his covers are good, but not very different from the originals.
@Man0mongMen
@Man0mongMen 10 жыл бұрын
MetalHearts100 I'd say he won because of the tonality and dynamic range in his songs. Emotion is key in music and I'd say Calum Graham definitely has it, even if the songs he played weren't super advanced on a technical level. In music, expression and tonality far outweigh technical chops. In my opinion, his songs were the most expressive out of all the performers... so yeah, smystory.
@Yagamii934
@Yagamii934 9 жыл бұрын
MetalHearts100 what the hell are you talking? Calums songs are technicly much harder to play than ben lapps trust me. I dont like it to compare musician because music isnt something to compete but calums composition has soul and a story and ben hasnt the feeling and the story to express. Ben is like a michael bay film: much wow but no consense and really dumb. And the originals of ben lapps are really bad in my opinion. No story and no structure. The songs he played on the tournemant are covers ;).
