Oh Debbie i flaming well love you!! LOL.....I have looked at these for sometime now on your projects and fallen in love, not having a clue how to do it, thinking it must be so damn difficult to have a finished project so beautifully stunning, it has to be hard, doesn't it? but you have shown me how easy it is! It's funny when someone shows you something, it becomes less daunting. I think once i have managed to make something on my machine, i may do a small square of this, and add it to the centre of a cushion, or a panel on a handbag like you have done with one of yours, you are such an inspiration to me, thank you xxx

Looking into the history of smocking I think many countries have tried to claim it, it's very popular in Portugal, India, Japan and very much in Algeria. There is very little information available worldwide and sometimes can be quite mathmatical! I've been trying to work out more simple ways to smock and will be letting you know when the book is published...

You are so right Debbie. I have searched over the last 7 years or so, the history of smocking or shirring. It is a difficult thing to pin down and many countries have tried to claim it as you mention in your comment above.

You'll need twice the size of your cushion pad as the smocking shrinks it by half, add a couple of inches on top of this for seam and zip allowance.

I'm confused. We mark every alternate box, but the flowers are made on every third box only. If I make a flower on every marked square, the cloth bunches up into unrecognizable pattern. So I made a flower in every alternate square and it turned out fine, but I have those x marks showing in between the flowers, although washable but I wonder what's the purpose of marking the extra squares. Or am I getting it wrong?

Thanks a lot, it seems to be easy in fact. What i want to know is, is there any way how could i know the mesurment for the piece that i should buy knowing the measurments of the cushions/beds i'm trying to cover. Hope my question makes sense and somebody can help me.
@debbieshore
@debbieshore 6 жыл бұрын
This design shrinks the fabric by half in both directions, so buy a piece of fabric twice as large as you need! ie, a finished size of 12" with an extra 4" border would need a piece of fabric measuring 32" square. Hope that helps!

radhika rao the fabric shrinks by about half, I'd try a 30" square of fabric and start smocking in the centre, then you can stop when it reaches the size you want! I'm afraid I never did work out the maths for smocking, it's just trial and error for me...
