Thanks for sharing this story. I was born in DF and have been back and forth from the USA for a long time until the bad guys took over the roads. My family was driving from Torreon to Monterrey and they were stopped by several surburbans. They took my great aunt and her family. She told them they would give them what they wanted but to let them go. She refused to give them the wedding rings, she told them she was happy with the life she led and they could do whatever they want to her but to let her family go. Thankfully her tenacity amused them and they let them go with their rings. In CDMX my uncle was sadly murdered because he came out of Fuentes De Pedregal in a Mercedes Benz suv. He was taking off his seatbelt and they thought he was pulling out a gun. I have also had family kidnapped in Tamaulipas and in CDMX. Gracias a Dios they’ve all paid their randoms and have been released. My aunt and uncle left CDMX and moved to Qtro along with other family members due to the rising crime in the big city. I really miss everyone, the food, my culture but I don’t feel safe taking my husband who is caucasian. How long ago was this? I have driven all over Mexico and only had pleasant encounters with police. Much nicer than US police. A couple older American friends complained about being taken advantage of by corrupt cops, but in both cases after listening to the full story both had committed a traffic offense and both Americans initiated the bribe offer in order to avoid inconvenience. Not to say some cops won’t try to shake down naive (especially older) Americans, but Mexico has been cracking down on such corruption. The biggest expense of driving across Mexico is the insane tolls.

@@jennyhammond9261I was responding to the Costa Rica comment, but nice to hear you confirm my experience. I am NOT fluent, but even knowing some basic Spanish does help. Even more important is learning the traffic laws, which are a bit different than in US. My only offense in Mexico was a parking ticket. Had to go to the station at end of the officer’s shift to pay the fine (to a separate cashier, NOT the cop) and retrieve my license plate. On first try I arrived too early and the cop hadn’t returned from patrol with my plate, so had to come back within a 15 minute time frame just before the station closed, or wait until the next day. In places that get a lot of tourists the police know that an American on vacation is not going to be patient enough to go through the correct process of paying the fine and maybe missing a flight or at least wasting a day of precious vacation, which can make them a tempting target. Nice to see Quintana Roo address this by allowing tourists to get off with a warning for minor offenses.

Lets talk objective FACTS vs how you feel. Its about murder rate per capita. How many murders to 100,000 people is the world standard. Most lists go by cities of the world murder rate per capita. They do this because population varies vastly by country so it makes no sense to compare the total death of the US with 300+ million vs Finland with 5 million. 4 US cities make the top 100 (St Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago) but you have about 20+ cities of Mexico making that list. Then there is the list by country where Mexico is top 5 and US is not in the top 20.

So weird for you to mention the 'free road'. We used to drive on the free roads sometimes in the 80's and the 90's. The only reason we would ever drive on the pay roads was because it was faster. Now you cant even know you would be safe on the pay roads. Gosh..I know this crap happens all over the world but..Im rethinking about Mexico and have been for a few years now. I just dont want to be in Europe in a country in the EU. The treatment of the citizens during the sickness was horrific. You all know it's gonna happen again and I dont want to be trapped. Even in Mexico the mask mandate was just lifted in late 2022. Eastern Europe is looking better and better, if it just wasn't for that snow.

Driving at night on Mexican highways has always been discouraged. Ask any Mexican, the biggest risk is crashing at highway speeds into a horse, cow or other livestock that is loose and around the roads. That is the greatest risk you face. Buses have this issue, but they can withstand the impact and you should be wearing your seatbelt.

Wrong. I’ll give you one little example. Oakland’s murder rate is 23.5 per 100,000 residents. In comparison, take Colima, Mexico, which has a murder rate of 181.94 murders per 100,000 residents. So you are wrong. And Oakland is not even close to other American cities, as Oakland has a murder rate of 23.5 per 100,000 resident and ranks 18th in murder rates. That means there are 17 other American cities worse. St. Louis is the deadliest city in the U.S. with a 69.4 murders per 100,000 residents, still much lower than Colima. Tijuana has a murder rate of 107 per 100,000 residents. So no, not even Oakland is as dangerous as many cities in Mexico. Another fact, 90% of Oakland’s murders are black on black crime. Oakland is 33% black. So if you are not black, you might be robbed, but likely not killed. I’m all bout facts, not hearsay.

Interesting, so they just shot her for the sake of pure murder with no provocation or reason, this shows a type of pathology of a new type of Mexican people popping up all over Mexico, with no push to curb it these crimes by the police, military, government, or locals. Consider what that says about Mexico in general in the entire world crisis expanding on earth right now. "Not going out at night" is just not acceptable as a fix, and actually feeds the cowardliness of what underlies the fall of civility, and giving in to wickedness..

Just tell him to be back at the resort before 10pm if he decides to explore outside the resort. There's public transportation and taxis that takes you to the mall, shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. Fyi: taxis are expensive but safe, especially if he decides to go out to the nightclub. One more thing, tell him not to take too much cash with him when he goes out.
