US citizen. Last year, my husband collapsed and hit the back of his head at a restaurant. It was a small gash that, all in reality, didn't need medical attention, but after seeing a puddle of blood, I wasn't thinking clearly. I made the mistake of asking for a medical team. They came right away, spent about 10 minutes checking his vitals, and wrapped his head with about $5 worth of gauze, and when everything seemed to be ok, left. We didn't leave the restaurant, no ambulance ride, was never seen by a doctor, $775 later. For gauze and 10 minutes of their time. Our insurance covered jack shit. Care to guess who our carrier is?

The ER doctor told me that if I'd waited another 12 hours to come in, I wouldn't have survived. Then I spent another 9 or 10 years having my paycheck garnished to pay off the ER bill. @writerconsideredАй бұрын
6 hrs is short time. An American emergency room it takes 8 to 12 hours just to get from the waiting room to an examining room. More hours to be seen. More hours for imaging. Then a diagnoses and treatment. You can spend 20 to 24 hrs in the ER for a broken arm. So the less wait time in America is myth. We wait because of understaffing and overcrowding. The overcrowding is caused by not having insurance to take care of normal things in an outpatient setting. And the understaffing is the for profit hospitals trying to suck the most out of profit margin by shorting staff. Oh and by the way you wouldn't be made comfortable that entire time.

My grandson was in a car accident while driving home from work. A woman crossed his lane and hit him at speed. He was airlifted to our major hospital. He was rushed into surgery for multiple injuries including compound fractures in his arm and right leg. He suffered a brain injury too and was then in ICU for weeks in an induced coma he received the same care from specialists a person paying private health insurance would get. After he was woken out of the coma, it was another week or more before he could be relocated to a rehab ward where he received for physio, speech therapy etc.. After a few months he was discharged and referred to the acquired brain injury clinic for follow up. Thankfully he is okay, and has made a remarkable recovery. At no time, did he have to pay a single cent towards his care he came out after all of that with NO DEBT. If you are uninsured but covered under our Medicare you may have to wait for (elective) surgery which is not good but it's better than nothing at all. We have caps on prescription fees to a degree and most drugs are affordable. Again, not a perfect system but still better than the US system. At least here, you can have a baby and not pay for it. Health CARE should not be for PROFIT. Get rid of the middlemen, they are what has destroyed your system. When you go to the clinic, the receptionist's kids are running around, cause she apparently can't afford a babysitter. I love how people in the US that are opposed to single payer health insurance (M4A) complain about Canadians and people in the UK waiting to see their doctors. AS IF AMERICANS AREN'T WAITING TO SEE THEIR DOCTORS! My husband had terrible pain and his PCP said he has Rheumatoid Arthritis. He had to wait 3 months for an appointment for an RA specialists so he can get prescribed drugs. He was suffering and couldn't lift his arms above his shoulders. I have friends all over the globe including England, Canada, and Ireland. They never complain about having to wait too long for care. If they stub their toe they wait. If they have pancreatic cancer they don't. This is not hard.
@sinisterkitty8411Ай бұрын
Yeah, this gets me too. Everyone knows that, short of a dire emergency, it's pretty much a 2 month min. wait for a specialist. And can go as high as 6 months or more. And that is often just to see a nurse practitioner who will then decide if the actual dr. needs to see you.
@cslattfriАй бұрын

Most Americans have NO idea because it's all they know. As a Brit who moved to the US 12 years ago, it never dawned on me just how great the NHS was, because I knew no different, it was the norm & I took it for granted. Until I moved here! Americans are fed lies about the health system outside the US and they believe the lies, they know no different. The UK's NHS is struggling right now, some areas are fine some areas have it bad. People waiting weeks for an appointment or hours for an ambulance or sat in waiting rooms for hours on end, however, unlike here in the US, they are not worried about a crippling bill at the end of their treatment AND if they miss work, they will get SICK PAY! I have waited weeks for a doctors appointment here, so it's not much better. Healthcare should NEVER be run as a for profit business! WHY would a business want to make their customers well when they can keep them sick and bill them for check ups, procedures and monthly meds?! It is not in their interest to cure their customers, they need paying customers. Then you have the food industry, I have NEVER seen so many RECALLS for food products in my entire life, until I came here. Foods here that are banned in most other countries, because they contain cancer causing banned ingredients, well why not?! Does the food industry get a kick back from the healthcare business for making Americans sick? It would NOT surprise me.

His cold got worse so we offered to take him to the hospital. He hemmed and hawed and said he could not afford the cost of the ER or the hospital. He was still paying off the hospital bill for a detached retina two years prior, so he declined. He’d tough it out. That was Friday. We called on Sunday but got no answer and figured he was sleeping. His job called his family for a wellness check on Tuesday since they hadn’t heard from him. The police went to his apartment and found him dead. So sad. He was 58, no major health problems. The fact is that even in universal healthcare systems there is a specialty profession called medico-economics. This is a specialty where people decide on what procedures and medicines are possible within a given budget. Even in universal government funded systems which mostly exist in Europe there are limits to what can be done. People watch and compare with other countries and then have to agitate with their public representatives to improve services and cut waiting lists and times, not always successfully. Despite these limits and sometimes deficiencies there is at least an element of transparency and openess about the need to be accountable for healthcare and the need for constant improvement in its provision.

Aussie and I had similar in a way, I had cholestasis of pregnancy (liver failure) so hospital listed me as a liver failure patient for that, so I got the $600 dollar a month meds free. Had to have weekly blood tests and scans all done for free due to the liver failure. Child came a month early and via emergency c-section, weeklong stay in hospital and jaundice care for my lad. All in all, it cost me $0. Then too I had gallstones years later eventually (due to the liver failure I had). Was in and out of hospital 4 times needing a week stay each time on IV antibiotics as they scheduled my surgery. Had it removed, total cost $0. I love the Aussie system!

back in 2013, I suffered a stroke. Literally keeled over on the sidewalk. Someone driving by saw me curled up in a snowbank, called 911. The ambulance centre (a regional facility), was *literally* down the block, I could see it from where I collapsed. I spent 2 months in the hospital: daily occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech therapy. Regularly saw a neurologist and a cardiologist (turns out, the stroke was caused by a dissected carotid artery, resulting in a heart attack that precipitated the stroke itself). Had echocardiograms, MRI's, and my regular insulin&diabetic treatments the whole time. Wanna know how much the whole incident cost me? 15$ Not 15 thousand, not 15 hundred, *fifteen* dollars. *Canadian.* For a pizza I ordered and left in the nurses break room, because I felt like it. Otherwise, the provincial health system covered the whole lot of it.

Same in Ireland. I had 3 complicated pregnanies which required long term hospital stays amounting to nearly 6 months in total in a private room, 1 emergency c-section with a week stay in ICU, 2 standard c-sections, babies in NICU for total of 9 weeks. Bill - 0. During the hospital stays I got sickness benefit and then when babies came home 6 months paid maternity. I cannot believe USA have a system that lets people just die if they can't afford it. If I was in USA with my pregnancies I'd have been bankrupt or dead.

I suffered a migraine on the day the Queen of England died. It was my first ever migraine so obviously we went to a doctor. I was sent to a hospital for an MRI, and the doctors discovered that I had a misshaped pituitary gland. Hadn’t affected my life in any way up until that point but it would explain the migraine. Now my doctor had ordered a second MRI because even though he said it didn’t look cancerous, why take the risk? So I got sent back a few months later (Hadn’t suffered any migraines between then and the next appointment) for a contrast MRI, and it turns out the first MRI was wrong. I didn’t have a misshaped pituitary gland at all. Literally nothing was wrong with my brain. I had received two MRIs to basically get told “Nothing is wrong with you” The fact that if I was in the states my family would have had to pay upwards of several thousand dollars just for the hospital to tell us that there is literally nothing wrong with me is sickening

I'm a Canadian. My only experience with the US healthcare system was about 10 years ago. My wife and I were skiing in Utah. She broke her leg badly. She was rushed to the hospital and operated on immediately. They did a wonderful job. She - and I (!) - were then put up in a luxurious private room for 4 days before she could be discharged. She was given great rehab. We ate like we were in a fine restaurant. Then - and only then - were we presented with a bill - for US$150,000. Thankfully, we had insurance that paid for all of it. A former colleague has a different story. He had a massive heart attack skiing in Colorado. His heart stopped. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and brought back to life. Ten days later he got his bill: $400,000. But he had no insurance coverage. World class health care. World class price. I would not want to be anything less than well-to-do if I lived in the US.

As a Canadian, it's not just the fact that there is no charge for care that I appreciate, it's also the fact that there is essentially zero paperwork involved. I was taken to hospital and my husband came later in his car. By the time he got there, 1 hour later, I was already in the ICU with a chest tube. I spent 2 weeks in the ICU and 6 days in a regular hospital room. The most we paid was when my husband would come and visit me, it was $5 a day for parking. I tell this story to show that if you are REALLY sick up here, you will get care immediately. There are waiting times I won't sugarcoat that and sometimes they can be frustrating, but no matter who you are, you will get care, even if you have to wait. I am completely healed now, but it took a while. So I can't imagine trying to heal through all that AND worrying about how I would pay for it. It's true we do, exploitation is never easy to watch.

Most of my friends (Dutch) feel sorry for you too. Not trying to rub it in. We're genuinely sorry for you. Even more so when we hear Americans talking about how the US is the best country in the world because 'bIg MiLiTaRy'. I consider it a point of pride if a country doesn't have a big military but *actually* provides its citizens a high standard of living. Shows you where the priorities are.

I'm Canadian, I severely dislocated my knee a few years ago. Ambulance, emergency room, had to get sedated and pain killers, I was in for a few hours. Total cost to me as I recall about $50 and the payment was for the aluminum crutches that I went home with. I have the option to move to the USA, I refuse to transfer there though because I don't want to lose my healthcare system.

I live in an Asian country where we have a lot of tourists. A large percentage of those are Medical Tourists. Americans who fly here for surgery. This is how bad it has become.

I am from the UK. I lived in the US (University research post). I got ill. It was cheaper for me to fly to the UK for treatment than to get it in the US.

Wow! I’m literally laughing with embarrassment at how pathetic your healthcare experience was over here. The majority of us Americans are hugely embarrassed by our healthcare system
@emmamarier7042Ай бұрын
@@susanfletcher3929No disrespect, but I doubt it's the majority. If it were the majority, you guys would change it. A majority voted for Trump, so 🤷♀️
@susanfletcher3929Ай бұрын
@@emmamarier7042 No, it’s definitely the majority. The reason it’s so hard to change is corporate lobbyists in DC pay all the politicians to keep the status quo. It’s a super fucked up system. Have you watched Breaking Bad?

I watched the story about not affording insulin, price went from $15.00 to over $500 dollars. unbelievable. how is that even legal. In a first world country. OUTRAGES. I read that when a drug patent expires in Canada that gov. regulations say it must become a generic drug. eg. a drug that costs. $60 now becomes generic, and sells for $15.00, its covered by most if not all health plans, or paid for by the social safety net. In the USA, after the patent expires, they take it off the market and replace it with another drug at a higher price. THAT IS JUST WRONG! That's how it works in all 1st world countries, except the USA. UNBELIEVABLE.
