Around town where I live there are quite a few stair shops that specialize in making square nosings out of basically any type of flooring to match the rest of your floor. The back of the nosing is left with the original locking edge so all you do is cut a plank to complete the depth of your tread and boom! your tread is perfectly flush, perfectly color matched and you can order your desired nose overhang. Also I’d definitely recommend to use a more heavy duty adhesive that doesn’t dry hard and cracks like wood glue
@mrvvoo2 жыл бұрын
I learned about these local options too that my flooring dealer made me aware of. The only problem is that this doesn’t work well for laminate and vinyl. The mitered edges that are necessary inevitably end up with super sharp corners (which will also be fragile) or gaps with exposed MDF below the finished surface. The sales guy agreed this isn’t ideal for laminate/vinyl because you have to address this gap with a commercial-grade wax crayon to match the finish. This does work really well, however, for engineered hardwood floors. Especially ones with thick enough of a veneer. You can even route out a tiny round-overed edge and it would be perfect. For laminate/vinyl, not so much.
@2008romboy2 жыл бұрын
@@mrvvoo That’s actually very surprising to me. What city are you in? I’m in Seattle area and the shop that I use makes them out of pretty much every type of flooring including lvp and laminate. And they ease the edges of mitered corners and color match with special blended stain in a way that it looks and feels like a solid piece of material. It sounds like the guys you’re using just aren’t using appropriate tools to manufacture them 🤔

Nice job young man. I first started doing laminate flooring on stairs 24 years ago when PERGO laminate flooring was just becoming popular. I remember being a little intimidated on my first set of stairs as I had never done them before in laminate.. Now I can do them in my sleep. They are very simple to do once you get it down. The only time they get involved is if you have railings and spindles with open stairs on one side or both. This means you have to remove the railings and spindles, hole saw precise holes on the sides of your treads for the spindles to go back in after the tread is installed. You also have to 45 your front and side pieces of stair nose molding very precisely and then put the spindles and railing back together. One wrong hole or cut and you will be pulling your hair out doing the tread over!!!
@velvelhertz96982 жыл бұрын
Is there any other way about going about this with spindles? Is there a way to do this without removing spindles and railing?

I like that you used common sense from experience to do your thing. It just made sense and save hundred of dollars the tree and retread crapola they tried to sell me for 20 to 40 dollars a pop plus trying to get it stained to match the laminate. I would have used acrylic caulk. Dirt will embed into the silicone, making it impossible to clean, where as acrylic will harden and be easily cleanable for its life.
@ericmuller33394 жыл бұрын
Acrylic will eventually crack, letting water seep in. Silicone will never crack and remain pliable.
@keith_dixon4 жыл бұрын
@@ericmuller3339 if acrylic caulk cracks, it's because it wasn't applied properly. And silicone will crack, just like acrylic and for the same reason, it will also crack for reasons that acrylic won't. For your transparent caulking application. Have you ever tried after applying with the caulking gun and before you tool it with your finger spraying window cleaner on it? Silicone and caulk bonds to dry surfaces. After it has been applied to the dry surface spraying window cleaner will prevent the spreading of the caulk/silicone. Then tool the area It will give you a very clean finish. Only wipe the major excess and not the silicone/caulk. Thought I'd pass that on.

A contractor has just completed a replacement of carpet on the stairs to our finished basement with LVP and the finished result is very much like yours with laminate in the video. (Looks great!) However, with the build up of the risers to make the surface flush for application of the tile, the tread is now shorter and going down the stairs, I find that i must clutch the handrail and angle my feet, as the nosing is higher than the tread and quite a slick surface. I fear a trip/ slip hazard now. Jesse; what can one do to the tread or the nosing to prevent a fall, short of installing a carpet runner? Is there a way to texture the nosing ?

Not surprising. By reducing the tread width the stairs may no longer meet Building Code, which governs the rise:run of stairs.

@JessedoesDIY4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately you'll need to remove the underlay from the planks before installing them on the stairs for the glue to stick. Then I would use a construction adhesive after in case there is residue on the bottom of the plank. The nosing can be bought at any flooring or box store. They will probably have to order it in, and are generic so you'll need a small piece of your flooring to get the best match

I already rebuilt a set of stairs and covered them with laminate. It's been a few years and they're holding up fine, but your method is better. I have another set of stairs to do now and I'm going to use your method. Thanks for the tips, wanna come help 😀 😉

Really hard to tell in the video but what is the horizontal dimension of the nosing? In the US the IRC and almost all state/local code adoptions require a nosing depth of 3/4" to 1 1/4" unless the tread is 11" or greater in depth.

You make it look so easy...I doubt we will get through this as quickly as you did.😃

I've been looking for an inexpensive way to finish my 11 pine steps that used to have carpet on them. I want to keep my current risers. I'm going to have to hire someone to do this for me. Can I keep my current risers and will the bullnose on my tread have to be cut off? Where do I find the bullnoses to match the laminate? I've never seen them at Lowe's or Home Depot. I suppose I could use vinyl treads instead of laminate? What's the advantage of one over the other?

Great video. Especially on the detailed measurement instructions, which are easily overlooked. Thanks!

great video.Sort of thinking start with a full width board at the top of the stairs then work back into the room..saves any small infill pieces
@JessedoesDIY3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Typically the stairs are the last thing to do so you are making due with scraps anyways, might as well use them up. Plus any seams will just match the rest of the room anyways, just only make sure to do seams on the risers and not the steps if you can avoid it to avoid any potential squeaky spots over time

This is a great video. Where did you buy the nose piece in this video. There are so many different ones, but the one you are installing looks like it will work best and last the longest. Thanks, Mike
@JessedoesDIY2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The nosing I bought from home depot. Unless you have some high end flooring that comes with it, stair nosing is universal just like transitions. I had dark grey oak laminate, so I had a small scrap on hand to match up in store as close as possible to what I needed. I found some smokey oak laminate nosing that was near perfect. I did have to order it in tho. Hope that helps!

it's beautiful. I have a project in 2 weeks' time with 28 stairs, unfortunately, are concrete stairs. Any tips?
@JessedoesDIY2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Unfortunately that's a different ballgame. Typically you don't want to glue wood to concrete.

Hi there nice video men Do you know the edge laminate , do they come together with the metal or separate
@JessedoesDIY5 ай бұрын
Thanks. They come together
@eliasmartinezsierra83244 жыл бұрын
Question ? How did you get the nose ? Is it part of the flooring you had or you bought separately
@JessedoesDIY4 жыл бұрын
The nosing you get separately from a flooring store or big box store. It's with the rest of the different transitions, mine had to be ordered in. Unless you get really high end flooring that has a matching one, usually they have universal ones so make sure to take a scrap of your flooring and match the color and wood species as best you can. My flooring is dark grey oak, but my nosing and transitions are smokey oak

Thank you for the video. I would like to know does the toe kick laminate strip sit proud of your step. Or it is flush with the laminate on the step
@JessedoesDIY3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The toe kick is proud, but only by probably 1/8"

What is the best saw blade to use for lvt? Some say 8t Pergo blade and others say 80-100t carbide. I have an entire basement with stairs (which I've never done before)
@JessedoesDIYАй бұрын
I use clean cut wood blades. Circular saw blade around 60 tooth. Too many and it melts, too little and it can chunk.

Great video! You don't need to leave a little room on the sides for expansion?
@JessedoesDIY6 ай бұрын
Thanks. Nope, if they do expand it's along the width not the length. But being glued down they won't move much
@biglon7411 ай бұрын
Just curious why you didn't use flush mount stair nose because you nailed your flooring down. no floating.
@JessedoesDIY11 ай бұрын
It's really hard to find a good laminate nosing, especially flush mount, get it to match and not break the bank. At least here it is
@mariusproca Жыл бұрын
Hi… very useful video… from where I can buy that step stair nosing? Many thanks
@JessedoesDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I got mine at home depot. It's universal and you typically have to order it in. Take a piece of your flooring in so you can colour and species match as close as you can. My flooring is dark grey oak, so I ordered smokey oak nosing. Once it's in place you'll never tell
