A British Airways Boeing 777, operating as flight BWA18B, was cleared for takeoff when ATC advised them to immediately cancel takeoff clearance and hold on the runway. Information gathered from the tower controller stated authorities became aware of a bomb threat to the flight, as well as a threat against the airport terminal.

My question is why were the steps so important? Once he was safely off the runway I would have activated the emergency slides to get the people off and away from the aircraft. As far as the long delay, I'm sure the airport management had their hands full trying to get the terminal evacuated in an orderly fashion. Unless there other aircraft right behind speedbird waiting to takeoff they could closed the airport, have had him hold where he was and evacuate the aircraft.

Hang on. It’s not everyday you get a bomb threat. I hate to say it but it’s something we get in the U.K. plus you have no idea what’s going on in the rest of the airport or the tower. She’s trying to get to juggle lots of calls and stuff like that. If it’s not something you expect to happen then, maybe, you might be a bit disorganised. I bet you they would be more organised heaven help them if it happens again.

Not "A" bomb threat. 2 bomb threats at least. One on the aircraft and one at the terminal. As this was not a huge airport, perhaps they just didn't have the staff or emergency personnel to cover dual emergencies that both required emergency services.

The delay in the evacuation of this aircraft was unacceptable. I think the captain couldn't believe it either. I don't know who this comes down too but better protocols are needed surely! Waiting a further 20mins for the steps, i am surprised considering the threat the slides wasn't used by the captain.

The ground handling company staff (amongst the lowest paid at an airport) are contracted to provide steps IAW with normal transits. Most don't have a contract to drive up to an aircraft with a bomb onboard and 50 tonnes of fuel, just as the fire and emergency services wont approach the aircraft. The ground handling company could also be liable for exposing their staff to an extreme risk. Insurance Premiums????

That Captain was incredibly patient with the Air Traffic Controller, the Airport management really should be embarrassed by how they handled this situation, a bomb threat on an aircraft filled with passengers should not take almost an hour to evacuate.

@@britasmith8008 No panic. Apologies for adding a sarcastic comment to this volatile emotional mix. Evacuation at best time was highly recommended, of cause. However, having 2 disabled passengers on board, sending them down the slide wasn't an easy decision. Repacking the slides at a "sloppy" airport such as Bermuda might not be possible, so an empty flight to the nearest maintenance base, preferably in the UK, would have been another bad turn in this event, had the threat been a hoax only.

Just now listening to this event in Bermuda. The British Airways Captain was amazing. You could hear the astonishment in his voice that they had been setting on that runway for nearly an hour before he could get any help. Tower control was trying her best to get him help but others were ot giving it to her for the aircraft. Bermuda should be fined if possible for not taking care of that aircraft quickly, got the passengers off and to safety. I am surprised the Captain did not evacuate when he was in the area to not cause any issues if the aircraft was to blow up when he first parked there.

I used to work part-time in Bermuda (the other time in New York). Bermuda is indeed an extraordinary place to visit, but the entire infrastructure is third world. I was hospitalized twice, on different occasions, and you cannot believe the incompetence. For an island that hosts so many banks and insurance companies, you’d think they’d have the resources and competence to do a better job. One anecdote: our main contact in Bermuda, a certain Mr Peniston, gave my company a hard time about absolutely everything. I’m sure he was looking for a “financial incentive.” Our dealings with him came to an abrupt end when the local police found him in a men’s restroom with….how to say this delicately…..another man’s Peniston down his throat. This was in 1987.

I stand to be corrected but this airport is in Bermuda ( Archipelago of 7 islands). Thus not a big airport compared to LHR or JFK. Much smaller complement of staff across all genres of responsibility. In all probability, never had to deal with such a serious situation like a bomb threat. So kudos to lady in the Tower. She probably had loads of calls to make to Fire, Police, Airport Security etc. There was only so much she could do. Wouldn't surprise me that the lifestyle in such a beautiful tropical island is very laid back and would take a while to get officials into emergency mode. The Captain was very patient in dealing with the situation in spite of the extreme danger the bomb threat posed. Evacuating passengers via chutes/slides is a last ditch operation. Many serious injuries can occur during such a disembarkation. Since the video ended rather abruptly, I am assuming all ended well and the bomb threat was a hoax. Being a British Territory no doubt MI6 investigated and found the hoaxer and he/she is safely behind bars for a long time. Great video, by the way 👍👌🤗

The frustration the crew were suffering was cringeworthy. I also detected the tower controller was also dreading each interaction as she too realised they were woefully unprepared. Contigency planning seemed no existent. I simply do not understand why sombody did not immediately go to plan C15 or whatever, open the documen and follow the plan. One of my duties 30 years ago was to go through one of these plans every month - with heads of departments and try to 'break' them. As in "what happens if this happens at crew change time?" or what happens if we also get X happen at the same time? The plans would regularly grown, change, morph and even be scrapped. Bermuda have a strange way of planning for safety.

Can you imagine if they made this video in real time and not truncated for the times when nothing was being transmitted? It was hard to listen to. If I were that pilot I would have likely evacuated the aircraft via the slides. That would likely result in a few minor injuries but he would have had a good reason to back up his decision. I hope this airport does a deep de-brief after this incident because it seems there are areas that can be seriously improved upon.

Unfortunately not how it works though. If they have limited resources and a bomb threat on an aircraft and at a terminal, they are going to prioritize the terminal since there are more people at risk. If an aircraft with a potential bomb on board has been isolated, they will not send resources to the aircraft until the terminal and larger airport is evacuated. I agree with the captain's choice to evacuate via the slides though. Tough situation all around and given the lack of resources, I think everyone did a good job.

Would be interesting to know what time of day this happened…. would definitely affect the availability of airport personnel to assist with the passengers on the plane. Also a point to remember is that not all airport personnel are authorized access to the ramp & airfield. This is a pretty dynamic emergency situation.

Fair play to the ATC lady she was very clear and concise, you could hear the pilots frustration being aired but the situation was far from normal with the evacuation of the terminal as well. Whilst it is unacceptable for the delay that they experienced I would imagine that the limited resources that an airport of Bermudas size were already in use with the terminal threat, there was presumably a threat assessment made and the evacuation of the terminal where the numbers of people could have been greater than those on board the aircraft which determined a priority. The captain could have instigated a slide evacuation and the passengers could have been marshalled by the crew once they had evacuated. Possibly 10 to 12 crew equates to less than 20 passengers per crew member so in many respects in this situation the captain had more resources available to him than were available in excess to the Terminal Evacuation. Personally I don't think the authorities or the Captain were either right or wrong and in hind site the captain should have initiated an evacuation via the slides, ok it would have cost the airline a lot of money but BA can afford it !

No, she did an excellent job. The airport was understaffed and under-resourced, but she was likely dealing with a lot of other things - aircrafts taxiing back to the gates and being evacuated, coordinating with emergency services, and other communications with other airport staff and pilots.

The pilot was trying to avoid the passenger injuries that always occur with slide evacuation , It not like a fun park slide it can be brutal

Omg the delay! The pilots probably went out of hours for this flight and a new crew needed plus all luggage had to come off and re-scanned. To be fair this is any airports worst nightmare ! Even the most modern and well Equipped airports .

Imagine being a passenger and then being on the plane, getting a text from someone saying that that's is a threat on your plane that everyone but you knew about and still not being evacuated. A threat like that should be immediate disembarking, no waiting. 1 hour after canceled takeoff and still on the plane.

This airport has an unforgivably useless emergency evacuation system in place. After listening to this. I would NEVER fly there.

I’m a pilot - search and rescue, not passenger aircraft- but my initial thought after hearing the bomb threat was: the bomb might be on a timer to go off a few minutes after takeoff. And on that basis, I would have evacuated the aircraft upon being notified of the threat, regardless of ATCs instructions. My first priority would be my passengers and there is just no way I would sit there for FORTY MINUTES while potentially a timer ran down! 😳
