It is a shame that Levi is peddling in half truths. The Torah speaks about the Ger and the Talmud makes it clear that it is referring to a Ger Toshav, not just any old stranger. So, it is fallacious to suggest that the Jews are commanded to love ‘the stranger’ as if it is referring to any non Jew who lives amongst them. Many Orthodox Jews refer to non Jews as Shaygetz (male) or Shiksah (female) from the term שקץ - sheketz (disgusting) which is the way the Torah refers to unclean animals. Although the Tanya doesn’t explicitly state that one should hate the non Jew but by declaring them as from ‘the side that contains no good’ and that ‘all their kindness is self serving’, certainly doesn’t contribute to harmonious co existence to say the least. How does the Jew feel when they are labelled as greedy or such like? As for Mishum Eivo, Levi is trying to suggest that it is the Rabbis finding a loophole in the law so as to be able to save the life of a non Jew - as if the Rabbis seriously care about the life of the non Jew but what can they do they are unfortunately bound by an archaic law that they can’t straightforwardly circumvent. The Rabbis don’t really care about the life of a non Jew. If they did then they would rewrite the law explicitly stating that Shabbos should be violated because they now understand that the life of a non Jew is intrinsically sacred. Instead they dig their heels in and make it clear that it has nothing to do with the sanctity of non Jewish life but rather the continued fundamental sanctity of Jewish life which needs to be protected in the future and that if the non Jew’s life isn’t saved now Jewish life may be jeopardised in the future. So it is about Jewish life all along.
