The AK trigger (and safety/dust cover design) is exactly like this one, as well as Mechanical clocks/ watches escapement mechanism . So cool how technology connects like that.

I've always been a fan of John Moses Browning, and this rifle always makes me think about the auto 5 shotgun. I eventually got a model 81 in 35 Remington. At first, I thought it was kind of ugly, but it kind of grew on me. Now, it's a permanent part of my collection. Mine was produced in December 1941, which I believe it would have one of last produced until after WW2. One of the comments said the safety looked like the AK-47s, but the proper statement is that AK safety looks like a model 8 since it was first.

Many modern 50-cal firearms use long recoil
@christopherreed4723

The Lynx .50 caliber rifle uses not only a long-recoil system, but a *bullpup* long-recoil system (and us, afaik, the *only* .50 anti-material rifle to do so). It's one of the very few .50BMG rifles that can be fired from the shoulder with good accuracy. The long-recoil design lets a weapon absorb huge amounts of recoil energy by forcing it to move a great deal of reciprocating mass. That way the massive recoil of larger/more powerful cartridges can be mitigated to something that won't require the shooter to bring a chiropractor along. IMO the advantage of the system in smaller calibers is minimal.

I had an 81 Woodmaster (basically the final Model 8 "version") in 300 Savage. I almost never took that thing apart. Good luck putting it back together without instructions. Though at the range, was definitely a head turner and got people asking you questions. Back in the day these things definitely put you ahead of every other hunter who was still using, bolt action or lever action hunting rifles.

Most automatics eject brass hot enough to burn skin, but because of its long recoil mechanism model 8 & 81 remingtons eject brass that is cool , which is fortunate because it's weak ejection often hits you in the face.
@timrobinson6573
@timrobinson6573 Жыл бұрын
Why would it be cool? Can you explain please?
@robertbean8116
@robertbean8116 Жыл бұрын
@@timrobinson6573 cool as in not hot. As you are no doubt aware if you eject a brass from any manual operating firearm it is 'cool' enough to handle without fear of burns. The heat gets soaked into the gunbarrel. No matter how fast you shuck the bolt . The long recoil system allows that heat transfer. I did not mean to imply that the brass is being chilled or refrigerated. Any how I find it interesting.
@chadkingoffuckmountain970
@chadkingoffuckmountain970 Жыл бұрын
@@timrobinson6573 When firing, autoloaders spit out hot brass because they are ejected before the barrel sinks off the heat. Due to the long recoil mechanism, it allows the bullet to cool down.

Love the animation and deep dive into design. I really enjoy Browning designed firearms. My a-5 is the softest recoiling shotgun I have. Like the 1911 it works best with proper springs. And proper arrangement of friction ring. I haven't heard of an 8 or 81 wearing out springs but would assume they would lose some tension over the decades under preload. And if you're a student of his designs there's a lot carry over to other firearms. You guys have the best job ever

Everyone should take the opportunity to fire a long recoil operated rifle. The recoil impulse will prompt you to think "Uh...what just happened?" Note that the trigger/sear/disconnect also resemble and function the same as an AR 15 fire control group.

They aren't rare or particularly expensive. The later Model 81, which functions the same but has cosmetic upgrades, is more common and has the advantage of being chambered in .300 Savage in addition to the Remington rimless line of cartridges. (.25, .30, .32 and .35). They sell for $500-$1000 depending on condition and chambering. .300 Savage and .35 Remington are the most common. .30 Remington is fairly common. .32 Remington and .25 Remington chambered rifles bring a premium. The .25 Remington was dropped after only one year of production of the Model 81. Model 81s in that cartridge are very much more expensive. Remington Model 8s are more scarce and expensive, but not as much as some other collector firearms. The Model 8s were prone to stock splits as they had a smaller, trimmer straight grip stock and thin forend. With all that mechanism contained in both pieces of wood, it made them prone to splits. The main difference between the two models is the Model 81 has a beefier stock and forend and pistol grip stock.

"To ease perceived recoil..." Yeah, that worked out well... (snicker) The recoil on all of the long recoil Browning actions is always out of proportion to the actual cartridge. It is an artifact of that huge chunk of metal slamming back in the receiver as the action opens. People have been complaining about it for nearly 120 years. I mean, it is not painful or punishing. But it also isn't pleasant when compared to rifles with different actions chambered in the same cartridge. The only thing that the Model 8 and its successor the Model 81 had going for them was that they worked, and worked reliably in an era when semi-auto rifles were prone to be finicky. Which is why they had such a long production run compared to other centerfire semi-automatic rifles of the time.
@christopherreed4723
@christopherreed4723 Жыл бұрын
I've heard that several times now. I suspect that the recoil-attenuating benefits of the long-recoil action don't cone into play until you up the power considerably. The Lynx GM-1 would be an example. Sure, you can shoot a Barrett M82 from the shoulder, but you'll only do it once, and your chances of actually hitting anything are pretty slim. But several owners (not just the guys doing the publicity shots for Lynx 😏) have now demonstrated that you can shoot the GM-1 from the shoulder, unsupported, with acceptable accuracy, at least at closer ranges.

So would removing the second fork on the trigger assembly make it a full auto rifle, or just make the gun run away?
@ludditeneaderthal
@ludditeneaderthal Жыл бұрын
Neither, as the hammer would follow the bolt, thus not retain enough energy to "snap the cap". Full auto variants of this trigger group require a "third arm" or "trip" system with a secondary sear and notch, and a trigger rotation limiter. A "lightning link" type system will knock the interceptor claw off the hammer notch as the bolt locks into battery. "Hammer follow" mods, at best, give you all the legal liability of full auto, with no possibility of reliable control or implementation... so don't do it
@MamLewis

@MamLewis if you'd like to see examples, check out the trigger group of the ak47/akm family of weapons. It's the browning "Y" trigger system with a secondary sear. The us m1 garand rifle has the same trigger, only a 2 piece design, in semi-auto only. With minor variation, it's probably the most used semi-auto trigger system on the planet, both military and sporting arms.

No. The geometry is such that one notch or the other would have to engage at full recoil. You'd have to do a perfectly timed "reset, tug" motion on the trigger to produce what would be "simulated full auto" (as every shot would require a pull). The full auto variants of the browning trigger have a wider "u", allowing a "midpoint no hook" position, and a secondary sear/trip for full auto (ala the ak47/akm trigger group)
