Fun theory: "Lord" Licorice used to be a prince, he was the son of King Candy, but the king was ashamed of Licorice, saying that his candy isn't sweet enough to be royalty in Candyland, but since Prince Licorice was still his son, he had a castle built in a little out of the way castle and allowed him to be a lord. This would be around the time that Princess Lollipop was born, since then the King would have a "proper" heir. Now Licorice is bitter because of what he could have had, and the love his sister has that he never got, thus he wants to take over Candyland.

*Actually, the board game did have a story.* Beginning with the 1980's version of the game, Lord Licorice had used his magic to kidnap/hide King Kandy and his castle. As a result, Candy Land's magic began to fail, and all candy crops began to do poorly. You (the player) are trying to find the castle and save Candy Land. There were also many spin-off books based on the 80's and 90's versions of the games. There's a little cardboard thing in the box explaining everything, including brief descriptions of the characters. They also changed Frostine into a Princess for the 2002 version (the horrible remake the film is based on) which explains why she's Lolly's sister (ugh, curse the 2002 version) and also why it's Chocolate swamp instead of Molasses. Also, it was not uncommon for nobles of lower-status to conspire for higher-status than their superiors. There's a reason so many stories have viziers as the villains.....because they often tried to overthrow their king out of spite since they were doing more work. Lord Licorice has every reason to want higher status than what he has. While he might make things miserable for the other kinds of candy, the denizens of his land would have more area to roam. Also, he's only banning other kinds of candy, not the people themselves. There are plenty of citizens who are not made of candy.

+PyroGothNerd In the movie's defence - they actually managed to make Mr.Mint's new design less creepy in the film. I don't know - the way he's drawn in the 2002 game just looks really unsettling in my opinion.

I'll give the movie credit for one thing: covering the kingdom in licorice out of wanting payback for those who mocked him because nobody likes licorice IS kind of a clever motivation for a villain.

@Nintendotron64 Жыл бұрын
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster probably not! Actually, I think that would’ve been a better direction to take the story: expand on the whole “licorice racism” concept. Have the licorice bits initially hail Lord Licorice as a savior of their people, but throughout the film, make it clear that he doesn’t really care and just wanted to be crowned. This gives the licorice bits motivation to rebel and the heroes motivation to stop Lord Licorice.

This movie is...pretty much harmless. Yea, its a typical nonsensical, boring kids movie, but at least there is some good effort on the animation ad voice-acting, and I confess I found some jokes a bit good, specialy the visual and timing that reminds a bit of Animaniacs and Loney Tunes. From what I've seen in this review, I want to like Lord Licorice. It's completely understandable to want his licorice to be as liked as all the other candies, until he went with the typical plan of outlawing every other candy. And he mentions that licorice is all but banned when sweets rule the land. So.... where does that leave sour drops, spice drops, other assorted hot/spicey candies like those atomic fireballs? Do they get a spot in the Candy Confederacy? If not, then why doesn't Lord Licorice form an alliance with the rulers of those other assorted un-sweet candies and form an alternate kingdom where people who do like those kinds of candies can go? Like even taking what's presented in the movie, someone with decent writing capability and a standard grasp on logic could rewrite this mess and turn it into a respectable story. Ah well, might as well toss it in the pile of 'Could haves, Would haves, Should haves'.

For example, Ian James Cortlett (Goku, Mega Man, Coconuts) plays Mr. Mint, Scott McNeil (Dr. Wily, Yukon Cornelius, Piccolo) plays King Kandy, Doug Parker (Starscream, Mega Man in Captain N, Prince Adam in New Adventures of He-Man) plays Jolly, Britt McKillip (Princess Cadence, Baby Lola Bunny, Hannah Marie) plays Princess Lolly, Mark Oliver (Him, Super-Skrull, Lord Garmadon) plays Lord Licorice and finally Kathleen Barr (THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE, Katella, Mrs. Twombly) plays Princess Frostine. And also DODGE!!!!!!!!!

Love the review but the movie was based on the revised from from the early 2000's, not the original. With the 2000's one, Frostine and Lolly were sisters rather than mother and daughter while the king was both their father. My theory is that the original Lolly could've grown up, married and have the current Frostine and Lolly...still can't figure why and how could she marry a guy with the same name as her father though...
@javariyearwood67925 жыл бұрын
14:42 "Loli tries to save Jib by jumping in, herself, because she forgot that she can fly, apparently!" Not only that. This entire scene could've been avoided if Jolly had decided to shape-shift into the broken part of the bridge (or anything else, really) so that the rest of the main protagonists can cross. Essentially, this is just another excuse to cause conflict where there would be none at all, otherwise.

(looks angrily at the screen) This is bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. How dare they make a crappy movie about a classic board game. How dare they ruin the characters many grew up with. How dare they ruin an iconic board game that has been passed down the generations.ok, first off I'm not a Candyland fan boy; I love it as much as everyone else, mildly so since it is something I grew up with. With that said, this is still crap for several reasons. First, no Plumpy, the green troll in the first land (as seen in Bob's image of the board game) HE'S THE FIRST CHARACTER YOU MEET AND HE'S NOT IN IT!!! Second, Mr. Mint, or correctly known as Peppermint Jack has an axe as he's a lumberjack of the peppermint forest, which is also seen at the games box at the end of the review by Bob; also as a side note, HE'S ALWAYS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHARACTER I THE GAME, SO MUCH SO HE'S THE LARGEST CHARACTER ON THE BOX. WHY!!!! IS!!! HE!!! AN!!! IDIOT!!!!!!!!!! Third, wtf is that thing from the gummy lands? That is not Jolly the pink skinned buggy gum person. WHY DID YOU REPLACE HIM WITH THE NON-SPEAKING GUMBY REJECT!!! Fourth, Granny nut has no dog-basket-thing; in the board game she is seen picking the nuts as if she were a peanut farmer and putting them in a non-living basket. Plus her dress is blue, not brown. Fifth, what the hell did they do to Lolly? Sure the idea of her wings being lollipops is mildly interesting (as I doubt she can fly with them), but in the game she already has a land, ITS RIGHT BEFORE FROSTEN HOW COULD YOU MISS IT? Also, no, no no no no no no, her hair is pink not brown, stop trying to be Frozen: LET IT GO! Fifth, Frostine...oh my god, why did you do this to her. In the board game she IS King Candy's wife, the QUEEN of Candyland, not his daughter in any way shape or form. Lolly is their daughter, that's it why make it weird and acceptable for Bob to say: 'Must be a Bobsheaux' Plus her dress is pure white, like ice cream or frosting like she is meant to represent. Sixth, Gloppy...this is why it shouldn't have been marketed for low IQ kids, Gloppy is a monster, that's why no one wants to land in the 'molasses swamp' (not chocolate you self serving pieces of-) Seventh, Lord Licorice...actually that was his goal all along, I looked it up...but that's what the movie business is for, changing things up. Make him more diabolical, make him more threatening, make him have a better goal at least. Eight, King Candy, your a dumbass when you should have been a benevolent ruler who actually had guards and was an actual intelligent person. and Ninth, where are the kids? heck this could have been an Oz, Narnia, or Wonderland type movie where the kids get sucked into the magical world of Candy land and have to get out. I HATE THE GINGERBREAD KID!!!!!!So yeah I'm a little P.O.ed about this crap called a movie. Thank god it was direct to video or several hundreds of people would have asked for their money back...more so than the poor souls who bought the direct to video. Anyway that's all. Keep up the good work Bob.

This movie is the exact opposite of the board game and that alone did better than the movie. I wish I could remake the movies with everything involved with the board game myself. Old character designs, kids that you actually play as, the locations to be played out better, and character development.

But... but Lord Licorice is the Lord of *all* Licorice. Doesn't anyone like that Australian red licorice? or Twizzlers? Surely Lord Licorice is the Lord of Twizzlers... Know what? No. I'm tired of this anti-licorice propaganda. Justice for Lord Licorice, I say! The Gingerbread People should join the Licorice people in solidarity as both are treated so ill by society! #LicoriceLivesMatter
