The best way to collect Pokemon cards is to literally sort singles by cheapest and get ones you like the look of. SO MANY beautiful cards have so little value because they aren't in play or aren't the ultra-rares. If you put them in protectors and hold them long-term, you'll get back what you put in for sure, and in the off chance you don't, you've got a lot of pretty art cards for cents... rather than 5+ bux a pack to get mostly bulk you don't want.

Agreed. People tend to focus in on a handful of "chase" cards in every set, and all the other cards fall to the side. There's so many cards that are ridiculously cheap from the current sets. If anyone wants any ideas on where to look, check out the Trainer Gallery cards from the later Sword and Shield sets like Brilliant Stars, Lost Origin, Silver Tempest, Astral Radiance, and Crown Zenith. These sets all got very heavily printed and opened, so there's tons of beautiful cards featuring iconic characters that are literally a dollar.

All fairy types have been moved to the psychic type cards. For example, Mimikyu (one of my favorites of all time) used to have it's own fairy type cards but now it has only psychic cards with a dark weakness and fighting resistance as opposed to steel weakness, well, besides that one delta species water type Mimikyu I have.

This reminded me of back in the day when I found an impressively crumpled ball-shaped Pidgeot card on the side of a road as if thrown from a car. I remember thinking someone had to be either incredibly cruel or incredibly pissed off at their sibling to put that much effort into ruining yet somehow not ripping that poor thing. "nursed" it back to relative health with a dictionary to flatten it as best as I could. Probably my most monetarily worthless card, but definitely one I won't be letting go of, basically perpetually keeping it safe for its original owner to one day find.

I just like a lot of the Alternate Art cards. I know some of them are very valuable, but I dont care which ones. I just like them becaue they tend to show pokemon engaging in activities other than battling. One of my favorites is a side profile Keldeo in a meadow at night. I dont have a strong opinion on Keldeo, the card is just gorgeous. I also LOVE holo energy cards and will always get excited, even if the rest of a pack is bunk.

I decided to collect single cards again this year when I started going to some local conventions in my area. Instead of focusing on a specific set, I set out to collect the Regi cards because they're honestly my favorite group of legendaries and tend to not be super expensive. The hard ones to find will definitely be all the ones Gen 5 and older but just having all of them together just looks really cool.

Some quick correction about the Charizard tax. Yeah, popular character tends to be more expensive due to demand, but a lot of sets also purposely short print them. Just cause two cards are the same rarity doesn't mean they are printed in the same quantity. That is why some cards are more expensive even though another card from the same set with the same rarity might be a few dollars.

Now being an adult and having job, the set that hooked me back in was Shining Fates. I love the many different art styles and just seeing what kind of deck I can make (no where near competitive levels, but still fun to play against my friends).

Buying the themed deck Brushfire was rough when I was a kid. especially in countries that you have to import these things. I think that deck worth my whole month of pocket money. But yea, the game is quite fun to play. I made a deck for every type around D E F G, and have bunch of bulks to customize and league battle decks. so in the future even if none of my friends have the cards anymore, can just use any of the decks I have.

The way I got back into pokemon was to buy a couple boxes of 400-ish cards from a local shop. It was all commons, uncommons, and non-holo rares, but for $30 I got like all the commons and uncommons (and some non-holo rares) for nearly every set since XY. I did have quite a few duplicates from this method (probably about 300 from the 800 cards I got) but it was still fun.

In most tcgs, Japanese cards will be the same price as the English ones, with certain exceptions: In Yugioh, the OCG (Japanese format) gets cards early, while the rest of the world (TCG) gets an occasional extra set of cards that aren't usable or printed in Japanese. Japanese cards usually aren't very desirable as you are not allowed to play them in TCG formats due to the difference in wording of card text, causing some very rare issues where effects differ. Also, being that the game is Japanese and OCG is its original format, prize cards given in Japanese do feel more special and fetch higher prices, especially since all prize cards for the past several years are purely collectible and cannot be played in any format. In magic the gathering, because it's not a japanese game, cards will always be the same price on the secondary market regardless of language, but they have occasionally made special Japanese themed alt art cards, the Japanese versions of which would naturally feel more special and desirable, as well as slightly shifting pull ratios or the card pools in certain packs, e.g. Strixhaven Japanese regular boosters having the Japanese masterpieces as well as basic masterpieces, while the Japanese masterpieces were only available in the overly expensive collectors boosters elsewhere, the regular boosters just having the standard masterpieces. Generally a common Japanese card will be the same price as one in English, it's more in the special collectables (playable or not) where the money comes from. I think it's mostly high accessibility in Japan in comparison to everywhere else that's causing these crazy buyouts.

I'm a tcg collector, too. Just got rid of a ton of bulk that's built up in my stores over the years. I got started with gen 5 (I've got the full Unova base set!) and sort of let it consume me from there. It's an expensive hobby; it took me a while to figure out that maybe I didn't want full sets and that trying to get full sets was going to ruin me. I've since narrowed down my goals: I collect Mew (my all time favorite), promo, Blue Oak, Bede, and Arven cards. There have been a few others I've sought after due to their art (the beautiful full art Galarian Rapidash, the ominous test tube Mewtwo, alt art G-Max Hatterene towering over Glimwood Tangle) or because they don't have many cards (Kadabra, Opal, Peony, Peonia), but I've tried to stick to my guns on what I'm looking for. I stopped buying a lot of packs/etbs unless I was interested in the promo or pin it came with, and turned in my good pulls right away so I could put the credit I got into cards I actually wanted. I've still got a sizeable collection, but it's far more manageable and I'm proud of it.

One of my favorite Pokémon card memories is something that happened very recently. I was working a night shift at the Dollar Tree. We had Pokémon packs for five dollars, so I bought one. I accidentally got my boyfriend back into opening shiny cardboard a few months after we started dating. I would buy Pokemon cards, and we'd open them together, which then made him want to get back into playing Yu-Gi-Oh. After about a full year of him playing and opening Yu-Gi-Oh product, he decided the format wasn't that fun anymore and looked into Pokemon's card game after we had done a couple build-n-battles together. He has now gone full Pokemon, dropping Yu-Gi-Oh entirely (only collects certain pretty cards he likes but doesn't play it), since -currently- Pokemon is much cheaper to play than Yu-Gi-Oh, as well as much more fun. His extra plus side is that my years of opening cards finally paid off and he made almost an entire, competitively viable deck (only missing a handful of cards) out of my bulk.

The Chansey in this set is honestly really cool. Since certain Pokemon don't have their evolutions in the pack, they end up being a bit stronger than they otherwise would be. Chansey has the classic bonus prize effect if you get it out of your prize cards that we've seen from mythicals like Jirachi and Celebi, but to see it on an evolving basic is really cool and makes me really hopeful that we'll get a good Blissey to pair with. The Onix and Jynx ex are the other 2 that I really want in these sets because they are sick in expanded, with Jynx spawning an entirely new playstyle around sleep KOs

The charizard thing is so true. Ive been collecting all the paldea sets (not the secret rares, just the base ones, cause theres just too many!), and obsidan flames has a charizard ex in the set. Its going for 28$ at my local card store. I bought 4 other exs from the set for 5$. Total. Funnily enough i pulled the illustration rare of charizard, i wonder how much its going for haha.

I remember my mom buying me the Pokemon Advent Calendar in 2008. I sadly dont have the cards anymore but it was a nice throwback to see the packaging and the little snowflake on the cards again. ☺

The only cards I collect are the Yuki Morii clay art cards. They're adorable. My girlfriend likes the rest, especially the more expensive ones, but I just like the cuties.

Pausing to comment, but I have a very similar memory of the SAME dialga card, it’s a roller coaster: So I was already in deep with card collecting, my father was a collector of other things and so I was trained at to take immensely good care of collection even in 6-7th grade (it’s now worth well over 10k only including the rare cards, there’s too much bulk to ever bother price checking). In my little school, I was considered one of the 2 kingpins of Pokémon cards, myself and the other boy basically ran the scene. We would have kids scheduled lunchtimes for trade offers, had our own rules about trading and trade backs, and would even once a month show off the collection and it’s gains to see who had improved more. However, one day, this kid we’ll call D, came in with that silver dialga card. Now in my moderate sized school, this card become instant legend, we called it the “Phantom Dialga” and my ass knew I wanted it the moment I saw it. So we scheduled a trading meet Wednesday during lunch and about 17 kids showed up not including myself snd D just to watch these middle school negotiations. The noon duties had questions and it was awkward to try and insist there was not a fight snd we were just really into shiny cardboard. But onto the talks, he’d brought 3 boys of his “posse”, glorified yes men that were the year below us and I came alone. We began to negotiate, unaware of the cards value outside of what our school deemed was valuable, so when I convinced him to trade this dialga for a MVenesaur EX, a Wailord EX and an Absol EX, for following reasons: -It’s a Mega and he can pair it with his MBlastoise -Big whale has big health -You have mega absol, so you need normal absol EX And he said yes? Please remember we were idiots, I was slightly less idiotic, and his yes men has 0 concept of card value. So we shook on it, I gave him my trade back rule of 48 hours (two school days following the trade) before the offer was rescinded. He agreed and I got the Phantom Dialga. Of which I still have. The next week on Monday, so after his two and 1/2 trade back period was up, he tracks me downs and demands a trade back, I shrug and tell him he agreed to the rules and traded it fair and square. Didn’t ask on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or text me over that weekend he wanted it back. He threaten to petition me… as if that would work and I told him to go ahead. Because of our rules being universal and other trades backs had happened, he couldn’t convince any of the other kids to side with him and he became a bit of joke because he traded the dialga card for what amounted to squat in the long run. I was always underestimate since I was the only girl in the space and boy did I abuse it. There was a golden Reshiram in terrible condition at the school too, but when I asked about it the boy was MUCH smarter and denied to trade which I respected. Though I always felt my dialga was lonely knowing there was a golden Reshiram out there. However just last March I found someone with a near mind golden Reshiram and finally managed to snag it for a fair price and now they are reunited. My prize 2 cards ;3

I remember pulling a blank card when I was a child. there was the normal art on the back, but on the front was just white, only the border was printed. Still not sure what happened there.

Yoooooo I remember having that calendar as a child!! I still have some of the snowflake cards too, like Piplup and Chimchar, but unfortunately I don‘t have the Delibird anymore that came on Christmas Eve 😢
