Any native English speaker (and I';m sure most not native English speakers that learned the language ) know compound nouns. School book (a book you use in school), bookshelf (a shelf for books) ... rice ball... ball of rice (close enough for the kids to get the gist). Any one that knows what rice and ball means can figure it out.

There's an explanation for Bulbasaur using Whirlwind. In the Japanese script, Ash is telling Bulbasaur to "blow away the Stun Spore." In Japanese, Whirlwind is called Blow Away. One of the few times they translated a Japanese move into an English move when they weren't suppose to.

The whole thing is a mess. Psychic was never supposed to be strong or immune against Ghosts, that was a bug in the Gen I games. By Gen II it had been fixed. Ghosts are stated to be strong against Psychic types in the Sabrina episodes from Kanto, then it goes the other way around in Johto. The anime contradicts its own canon and the games. And for those who say "but the Gengar line is half Poison", the anime says Psychic is strong against Ghost, not Poison. Psychic Sidekicks is a bad episode in all regards, dull, contrived, and with errors.
