Canine Heat Cycle | The dog Period!

The Canine Heat Explained in layman's terms:
This is the time when a female dog can become pregnant by a male dog. At this time of the month estrogen levels rise and then sharply decrease and mature eggs are released from the ovaries. What do owners notice when their dog is in heat? 1) Bloody or Straw colored discharge from the vulva 2) Swollen Vulva 3) change in tail position to bend or erect 4) behavior changes to anxious, seeking out a male dog and more affectionate. How long does a dog heat last? Dog heat least 2-4 weeks long, about 30 days. You'll know the cycle is over when she stops bleeding and the vulva goes back to normal size. If you are not going to breed your dog and want to avoid the heat cycle, spay your dog. You can spay a puppy around 4 - 6 months old and avoid their first heat. If you do not spay your dog, please note that they can get a uterus infection called pyometra and this is a medical emergency to remove the infected uterus. Very good video!👍 I know a guy who had a Shiba Inu who put a "doggy diaper/maxi pad" on her when she was in heat. She was later bred, but got an infection. (I think it was that Pyometra you mentioned.) She died as a result.😭 I read a little about using absorbent pads on dogs, and I found out that it is EXTREMELY important to take them off regularly and frequently to let the dog clean herself. I don't know if he didn't do that often enough, but I just wanted to point that out. You have a very beautiful Dalmatian! My grandparents had one they named "Stripe".😋 She was born in 1974, pretty long before I arrived on the scene, so I never knew her, but they had lots of pictures of her and they saved her AKC certificate. You take any dog that is sick to the veterinarian as soon as possible. She should not have died from a pyometra ... they can be treated, usually with a spay and antibiotics. Pads should be checked regularly and changed.

Most kitchen counters see a lot of animal blood... which is why they get cleaned with disinfectant. As a vet, I'm certain she's well versed in blood-born pathogens and how to safely clean her kitchen after filming.

My friend has a female dog who was unusually affectionate to me , me who has seen her as a puppy returned when she is a full grown dog. I am so scared of dogs due to childhood trauma but thta girl was so sweet, i patted her rubbed her neck and gave her handshakes u til my friend told she's in heat, she will be like that for a while. If I ever get a dog it'll be a female, ill take care of her like my life depended on it.

I was literally told the opposite by my Vet they said if you get her done in her first season she can get a bone disease and if you get her done in her second season she’s still at risk of getting cancer I was told her third season would be the best time to get her done and that was by a vet

The third season is fine. Ok- so we don’t really even know! All dogs are susceptible to cancer. So there is no hard evidence out there.

Is it possible that my dog had her first heat already, when there was no blood or blood tinted discharge, or swelling? My puppy went through a phase of discharge, opaque white with a hint of yellow. I did not notice any swelling, possibly a little. That is now gone, and she is now 9 months. She is a cane corso. She had this phase around 6 months old, for about a month. Then, not until about 8 months old, our male dog (not neutered) has been more and more all over her, sniffing and licking, and even tried to hump her.

Just spay your dogs unless your entire life is dedicated to canine genetic study & your life goal is to breed out health issues of your breed. Otherwise you're adding to a world filled w/ billions of lonely, distressed & depressed dogs with no home. On KZbin I see countless videos of backyard breeders hawking their "cute little puppies," and it's so horrendous. Most of them do it based on nothing more than how the dog "looks" and to make money. It's awful and they all should have to spend time working in a shelter or a rescue where they'd see the outcome of so many egomaniacs who think there's status in breeding. Enough ranting, but pass the word along when you see videos like that. This video was informative and those are great looking Dalmatians.

Hi my name Shanna. I have pom/chi mix female just over a year old. Our friends brought over their male not fixed also pom/ chi and we ended up watching him for the night. He's about 5 months old. They may or may not have mated.. what signs from the female would indicate they did? They were playful and all over each other that night abs the next day they ignored each other. Our beagle puppy just started her heat. Her vet told us when we set her surgery appointment she probably wouldn't be in heat before her appointment. Her surgery is scheduled for 2 weeks from now. She could be in full on heat by then. Is it safe to spay during heat?

My bully went into heat about a month ago and I know its over as she is no longer bleeding but her vulva hasn't gone back up into her body, its still out. Could something be wrong? This is my first female dog and im getting concerned. She did have hernia surgery while she was in heat. Could this have anything to do with it?

omg...THANK YOU. My rescued GD is about 3 years old. We got her on SuperBowl Sunday 2021l She had just gotten out of heat. She was in heat again in April....and starting again in late July. Some dogs can have 4 heats! And some cycle back to back like your dog just did. This really is not that normal .. but she’s fine: maybe she just wants babies!

Hello! So I am wanting to breed huskies in my future and I get a ton of different insights on this, is it safest to breed the female every heat they get? I hear that it's best to not breed every other heat cycle but then others get concerned for the dam when you breed them every cycle (obviously only if they are in a healthy state to do so). I'm just curious to see what you think on how often to breed a female and what not? :)

We skip a heat with our dogs. If you breed her back to back 1x that is okay, but try not to do that everytime.

You need to be in contact with a good Husky breeder who trains, shows, and produces really good Huskies. You need to get the recommended genetic tests for this breed after you get AKC champion bloodlines. Huskies are one of the breeds seen in animal controls a good bit. They are in need of people to rescue and foster. No it is not safest to breed the female every heat and how would you find good homes for that many puppies? There is a reason to do that but you do not continue to breed every heat. Breeding is not a matter of putting 2 dogs together and 2 months later, out pops puppies. You have to learn about pregnancy, whelping, caring for puppies, raising pups, getting AKC registration, and finding great homes " www.ofa.org/recommended-tests?breed=SH
