I've been sent a picture of the chapel now, and also of Canklow road full of houses, from the church end all the way to Ackers shop, that brought back a few memories. Some one mentioned about houses on duncan and ellis street in Brinsworth from the Brinsworth facebook page, asking if they were pit houses, and from the canklow road picture they are exactly the same build, i knew they were pit houses anyway, probably for canklow pit too.

Memories of Canklow. I used to go to school there. Near the river/bridge was a Scout hut I was not allowed to join because I did not have a uniform..probably saved me from some depravity lol. Have some relatives in the graveyard of St Georges Church. My dad John (Jack) Dalton was a renowned snooker/billiards player in the Rotherham area and used to play in the WMC in Canklow. Remember the slag heap there , was not long after the war then and me and my Mum used to take an old Wilson pram to pick small pieces of coal from the heap like many other folk then, we had to push it back up the hill to Brinsworth. Remember the miners walking slowly back home after their shifts totally black . No showers at the mines in those days.

Atlas street was the start of Canklow, if you look on the old ordnance survey map that are available either at Clifton park museum or the Library you will be able to see where everything was. The houses on Rother view Rd were demolished the council told us due to subsidence. I lived in one of those houses, now moved into another Canklow house, there was nothing wrong with most of those demolished. Thats a whole other story.

At the beginning before Harrison's a company called XRE was there it stood for ex royal engineers. Just by the garage was a factory that made crisps called Star crisps. Where the McDonald's car park is was the pit managers house (I remember walking round it when I was a kid). I was born in 327 Canklow road in the 50s 3 years later Jack and Edith did a deal with my dad because they wanted to extend their shop at 325. So we moved next door to 329.
@Rotherman11 ай бұрын
where would 327 be then and the shop, was it the one I said was Ackers? and why Ackers was it their name, its just things pop in my head when I'm in places, on the side next to the hotel there was a shop and I thought Joans shop but didn't say it cos I wasn't 100% but Shirley me old mate confirmed it in a message lower down. and I do now remember the XRE on the dog leg bend I think you could access it by a turn in.
@mikmike547511 ай бұрын
@@Rotherman 327 was on the side opposite from the pub the shop you called ackers 325 was directly inline of where the school is now between there and the then street junction was the workshop of XRE. The high capped wall you struggled through the trees for. Was actually the back wall to the yards of those old houses. When the bypass road was first built you could see the whitewash and other paint from the outside loos that were for the properties. As you look towards the canklow hotel (now KFC) to the left of there on the same side as the hote was house's. The Chipchases lived in one of them. David Chipchase was my best friend until the tragedy that happened with his family. Jack an Edith who owned the shop were a pair of characters ( I've got some amusing memories of them) Like I said. You're little film brought back so many memories. We moved from 329 when I was 8 to broomvalley ( because of dads work) for a couple of years then back to canklow to Town street.
