@Homestead Aquarius, even though your salt got rock hard, it's still good & ya could use a hammer or a small sludge like a 3 lb to bust it up. As for your other salt that was sucking up the moister, ya could put it near some heat like your stove when cooking, it would dry out the salt. Back in the day there was a little shelf up in the chimney & they kept the salt there in a small bowl cause it kept it dry & they could use it. Back then they sold salt & even sugar in cones & people had to shave off the sugar or salt to use it. I hope this helps ya. Blessings...

You will get hot there. Canned goods are best store at leas than 75⁰. It looses nutrition over that fast and will start to spoil quickly over 100⁰. I can imagine a few ways to keep them less than 100⁰ but it would be some engineering. Good luck Marilyn.

Thanks for addressing this issue. We live in Ohio and the past summer was really humid. We don't have central heat nor air conditioning. I went to do inventory and found most of my oldest cans all rusty. I am wondering if we put the cans in plastic sealed bags if that would help? I guess it would, much like your big tote.
@homesteadaquarius2 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome. Humidity can be hard to deal with. Plastic bags might work if there is little moisture in the bag when sealed. If you have desiccant packages to seal up with them in the sealed up plastic bags it would be even better. These cans of mine were stored (forgotten about) in the worst way possible.
