Sketchup for Woodworkers - Curves, Moulding and the Outliner

In this tutorial I introduce the Outliner panel for keeping track of all these groups floating around. We also rebuild the bookshelf using Components. I use the Line, Arc and FollowMe tools for the first time to create moulding on our bookshelf.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I tried Sketchup briefly several times over a few years and gave up each time. My latest attempt i had all the pieces to a tv stand looking pretty good but i couldn't figure out how to get pieces to line up in the same plane when they needed to, like getting all the drawers faces inset perfectly 1/4" from the leg fronts, they'd be close but off by just a little bit. I now have the confidence to complete that and some others things i was wondering how to accomplish. You are a good teacher. I am going to finish watching all the vids in your sketchup series.

Thanks Rob, your videos gave me the basics so that I could make my own folding bookcase plans. The hinges are not perfect, but I could "fold up" the case using Sketchup to make sure everything worked. Once again, thanks for the videos.

Used this tutorial series to help me learn Sketchup and design/build a dresser about two years ago and it was incredibly helpful. I have been a Solidworks user for quite some time so using Sketchup was a no-no to me but due to budgetary reasons I had to drop SW and try moving to a cheaper modeling software, here's where I found several options, with this being said, I decided to give Sketchup a chance after watching your videos, very interesting instructional and very detailed explanations. It has been a very difficult transitions since I was very accustomed to SW and the way it works but with your videos I have been able to understand the whole process a lot better. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world.

If you're looking for the outliner in more recent versions of Sketchup (I'm on Sketchup Make 17) it can be added to your tray Window -> Default Tray -> Outliner.

Great tutorial. Thanks. One thing I learned with the FollowMe tool... the path can't be part of a group. I had to Explode my group to get my molding to 'follow' the path.

Thanks for the tutorials. This one kicked my butt. My groups were all messed up and my follow me's turned into swiss cheese. Couldn't get the measurement reference tool to function quite right. I think my book shelf has reached the end of it's complexity haha.

Hey Rob. I'm really enjoying your tutorials. They're to the point, but not so fast you can't grasp it. Thanks a lot for all you've done. I'm having a big problem with the follow me tool in the video on curves, molding, and outliner. .After I understood that you have to manually draw the line where the cove molding joins the case, I was able to extrude the cove molding with all sides and ends included. But when I extrude the block molding, it has no bottom or ends, and as it extrudes, it takes the top surface off the cove molding. I've been redrawing the bookcase from scratch each time to practice, and sometimes the extrusion works right, sometimes not. Do you have any ideas about what's going on? Thanks.

Awesome videos Rob, good work! One question: how do I get the guidelines to go into infinity? In my 2017 edition, I have to first go from left to right and type in the length of the guideline, THEN I go from right to left and it will give me an infinite guideline, kind of awkward...

yes there is a free version and yes you can use the dimension tool to place the measurements on the drawing or use the tape measure as you would normally! :)

If you're on a Mac then you can right-click in a blank spot in the top menu and pick "Customize Toolbar..." and then you can drag and drop any of the tools back into menubar. I can't help if you're on Windows but maybe someone else can comment with help?

Too bad. I'm just learning Sketchup, about 2 weeks now. I'm old, don't hear real well, and I don't like change. Why do you have to talk so fast. Your mouse seems to fly about, cant keep with your mouse, mutterings, and the results all at once.

Hi Willie, sorry about that, I'm a fast talker. But, if you go to the lower right of the video player on KZbin and click the little gear, there's an option to change the speed for the video. Try 0.75 or 0.5 and see if that helps?

Sorry about that! I said "Triple click-1,2,3". You have click three times quickly to get it to select everything.
