Mom told me grandpa had a choice of payment during the depression, a quarter a week or a bushel of corn. He would alternate weekly. Grandma was amazing, she would make quilts out of flour sacks, old pajamas, old curtains or any other cloth. I remember she collected strings of all kinds. I asked her why and she smiled and said " A girl never knows when she may need a piece of string". I sure miss my family and our lost ways. It was a different world for sure

My mother in law said the same thing I believe she was born in 1918. They had a small homestead and grew everything had enough for themselves and the occasional hobo that came to the door wanting food. I loved hearing her stories and miss her so much. Oh I still have some of the Ration coupons they got back then. Anna In Ohio

You know, in rural România , we preserve fresh vegetables and fruits every autumn ...it feels kind of weird to think that in America this is not normal... every household plants vegetatables and in the autumn we preserve them. We eat from them every winter and last sometimes a up to a year. We grow even our own condiments (thyme, bay leaves...) and greens for teas and such.... you can't compare the taste to the supermarket food. I personally buy so little from the supermarket. We have hens so we don't eat eggs from the supermarket, some neighbours have cown so we buy milk from them... it's pretty cool actually 😁 anyway, lovely video, i really enjoyed it!

This was once common in America, not that long ago. My great grandparents did this all the time. It only took 2 or 3 generations of factory farming and "convenience" to make us forget (11:45). But we are remembering now, thanks to great videos like this!

@@TheSeasonalHomestead I am also from Romania and I can confirm you that it’s true. I live in a neighborhood when we all share the same garden. My dad grows quails, One of my neighbours is a beekeeper so we take all our honey from him. My dad has a friend who grows apples and cherries so every time my dad is helping him with something he is giving us lots of cherries and apples! My grandma is making jam and tomato sauce every single autumn so she gives everyone in our neighbourhood a couple of jars and my grandpa is growing chickens, rabbits, ducks and a cow. Oh and we also take water from a nearby spring. And sorry for the way I expressed myself and for the grammar, but I'm not so good at English!

At least here in Germany food in the supermarkets is comparably cheap: preserving makes little sence from a economical point of view. But growing your own vegetables especially under the Romanian sun will bring you so much more tasteful produce ... than some unriped picked tomato in a Dutch glass house. To have this fresh taste of summer and preserve it would be rather a motivation for me.

Amen Scott, I truly enjoyed watching this family as I sat here this morning with my morning coffee, I'm 68 and live alone but never lonely, and I still remember the good times as a child canning & preserving food, I also truly wish we had an entire country with the mindset of this family and the dedication to a more simpler way of life, This world and our country is getting hard to recognize from when I was little, I am concerned, but I also hold in my heart there are families out there still staying true to the proven principles in the book of life that will always shed the light of knowledge and prosperity over our land once again.

When I was a child, there was no tomato sauce in the supermarkets in northern China where I lived, so we usually made our own. The process we used was the same as the blogger's. @@rso823 What's wrong with telling children that they are more fortunate than others? Better to know and be taught at an early age that not everyone is privileged to have a roof over their heads or food at the table every meal time, so they can appreciate what they have. A grateful spirit is good. "The more perfect you perceive them, the more pressure they put on themselves." Perception is a personal experience. We have no control over other people's perceptions so why go on about people's perceptions about other people? LoL. It's not people's perceptions per se that affects other people, but their actions. I do agree that it is a problem when people worry too much about what other people think of them, but they are the ones putting that pressure on themselves--unless those people have a direct influence/effect on their life. But you speak as if other people are responsible because of their own perceptions lol. I agree with the "incoherence" comment.

For shure. Preserving the food is only the last 10% of work, but it is also the 'thank you' what you will get back for your work. And generally, it has also something to do with respecting our planet. Our planet does give us a lot (everything), but we must be willing to see it.

Indeed, society in general has become surprisingly comfortable expecting everything to be readily available at the supermarket anytime of the year, right?!? We feel so accomplished when we sit down for dinner as a family and see that literally everything on our plate came from stuff we grew. Indescribable, really... Thanks for watching!

I once had a volleyball teammate. She unfortunally had had sick parents. They lived of wellfare for the longest of time. She told me she never ate fresh green beans, the long onces. I almost could not believe that. Because we always prepped them and ate them fresh in abundance. She told me her parents did buy jars so nothing would go to waiste. Of course that was smart of her parents seen their sercumstances. But It shows it's not normal for a lot of people anymore to eat fresh vegetables. We almost forget how prepping is done.

You take me back many years ago. My parents had a vegie garden and fruit trees. My mother was always preserving something. One year she had done over 100 quart jars of peaches off one tree. Plus they gave away boxes, the freezer was full of stewed peaches. What ever they got cheap or free was preserved.

Yes, the kids are helping as much as they can. Do you have also berries? That would also be fun for the kids. I am doing food caning and preservation too. With apples I make apple-cream. Here (switzerland) many people don't harvest they'r things any more, especially when they are getting older. That is where I get the things I am preserving. And I have also a small garden for the daily things.

My dear. Hat's off to you! We also have a 4.6 acre homestead on our art studio property with 9,600 SF of veggie gardens. Our little farm is extremely well organized to maximize production. Anything planted on our property as a tree, shrub, or plant is edible. We preserve about 95% of our foods, and as pescetarians we occasionally eat fish that we can catch off of our houseboat (yacht,) and raise "The Girls" for our eggs at the farm. I'm 63 and my significant other, a carpenter and gardener is 57. This lifestyle looks glamorous to many people, however they must be willing to work long days, often 12+ hours DAILY. I took an early retirement this year to focus fully on our homestead and work a little less! Enjoy your family's "special" time together and may The Holy Father send his angels to keep you safe, healthy, and joyous; always.

You are spot on with your concept of linking good health to preparing food from scratch. . When I was around 50 I was told that my blood numbers were so off the chart that I would probably not live another 5 years. My triglyceride level was so high it could no longer be measured. My A1c listed me as having type 2 diabetes. I was overweight and my blood pressure was too high. Instead of attempting to deal with the issues through medications, I decided to dramatically change the food I was eating. This meant that I would have to learn how to cook it myself. Unlike your situation I had less kitchen floor space and counter space. Also, I did not have a crew of kitchen helpers. Your video demonstrates the labor intensive effort involved in preparing food from raw ingredients. I call it prep work or sous chef work. My solution was to redesign our kitchen around preparing quality meals, Instead of having kitchen helpers, counter space, and floor space, I filled my kitchen with industrial equipment. The equipment takes care of the prep work necessary to prepare high quality meals from raw ingredients. The result of my efforts is, now that I am 74 years old, both my wife's health and my health is much better than it was when I was in my 50s. My weight, blood pressure, A1c, triglyceride and cholesterol levels are all within normal parameters. This is my kitchen. It allows us to cook fine restaurant quality and healthy meals at home. The equipment allows the process to be time and cost effective. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpOWpJaPhst5a9k This is my process showing how I make salsa. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmaxq4qIeqp9g6c kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqLVdXSrqbWrrZI This video shows how I make a mirepoix; which is the vegetable base for almost everything. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3u9q2aJbLeFmJo PHD

its easy, all that is preserved in shop. people do so many mistakes, like keep jars or cans in fridge, when its closed, and in shop its on shelf only not in fridge, you can do same. when you open it, keep in fridge. buns or chips in bag, simply bend edges to centre like triangle, push out air with hand, then roll top to down and secure with laundry clipper, same you can do on coffee and will last open for week in cold dark cabinet before mold will eat it, when you dont do that it will be 2 days
