Canning Stock Route 2022 - Finally, the beginning of the trip! (the third video) - Well 2a to Well 6

It is a testament to the sheer amount of planning and preparation involved in this journey that we are only now beginning the trip itself in the third video of the series.
From Wiluna North Road, we turn onto the Canning Stock Route 4WD track - starting as an unassuming gap between the trees with some muddy wheel ruts. We reach Well 2, with its information signs and continue through Cunyu Station, with the original path of the stock route being redirected via Snell's Pass. We visit Windich Springs, then continue on to the completely restored Well 5, eventually reaching the amazing Milyinirri, Pierre Springs located at Well 6.

Fantastic video! Looking forward to the next one. The issues with the water heater were interesting. Glad you got that sorted! Looks like quite an oversight of design.

Yeah, the water heater is interesting. I think the problem is actually that the Australian Standards prohibit hot water heaters from outputting over 50 degrees C, so they've just done the lazy thing and added a 50 degree cutoff switch in a bad spot. Trouble is, that sensor over-reads, for the reasons mentioned in the video (you can see the temp sensor used for the digital display's not reading 50 degrees yet) - and by the time it gets up two metres of uninsulated hose, it's not 50 degrees any more.

Fantastic. I'm too old to contemplate ever doing this now, but it looks to eb a supreme adventure. For what it's worth, had you omitted the background music completely this would have been even MORE enjoyable (for me). The silence of the Outback, and all that. Thanks for the video all the same,

Thanks for the comment, and glad you still (somewhat I hope) enjoyed it! I unfortunately didn't have a decent external microphone and windsock setup at the time, so I didn't really capture much natural ambient noise, only a lot of loud wind noise... and the in-car audio tends just to be engine noise, loudly blowing aircon, and bits of random conversations about all sorts of things. And the drone shots obviously don't come with sound... Though I'd really love to be able to present that as it was.

Maybe that's a "Director's Cut" version waiting to happen some day! :-) :-) I do admit that ~music overlay~ is a pet peeve of mine, as very many YT creators make BRILLIANT videos (as per yours), then seem to think that their viewers will somehow lose interest in it if subjected to "the sounds of silence" / or the wind/car noises you refer to. I just don't think that is true. Indeed, tastes in music are so widely variable that it's more likely the MUSIC that will force them to change the channel. I have left it too late to visit Australia, I think (I'm a Limey, lived most of my life in the US), but have always always been fascinated by the country since my old Geography master showed us a 16mm film called "Cattle Carters." , , , if you're interested you can even watch it if you want on the BP film library (Google 'BP Film Cattle Carters'). It's still a good little film! With the advent of KZbin I have had a chance to vicariously (at least) travel the remote tracks of your fair Island Continent! ​@@zzmike I'll certainly consider it - I was planning at some point (probably not for a few months at least...) to cut all these videos together into one long movie-length epic, minus the intros and outros. I'd definitely consider making a version of that cut without the music, if I was to do that. (I do wish KZbin would let you upload two audio tracks, so you could select "with music" or "without music"...) I'll have a look and see if I can find that film - seems interesting.

@@DropTableAdventures "Great minds" . . . (on the two versions: "with" and "without": 'make your choice' . . . I had wondered why creators did not make two versions available). I did not know that YT proscribed having two versions of the same video. Yes, it's a great little yarn about a "grizzled" Aussie cattle train driver who gets lumbered with a "fresh-off-the-boat" Limey co-driver. "Adventures" ensue . . . :- It planted a seed in my young mind as a schoolboy, for sure. )

What's the tablet to the left of the 7100 running?

It's a Raspberry Pi 4 with the official Pi Touchscreen, running some software I wrote: github.com/gm-stack/radioconsole - a touchscreen interface that displays the status of various components, uses a RTLSDR on the rear Pi for a waterfall display on the 7100 (connected to an internal IF tap on the 7100) and SSHes into the Pi to run various commands (start/stop Direwolf, configure it to beacon or enable/disable VHF to HF gating for APRS, read the logs, change whether it starts up / shuts down with the car, reboot it if something crashes - it all works fine on your desk, but things can get a bit flaky when you put them into a 4WD and they're being banged around, and seemingly reliable connections become loose).

Very cool. I was excited seeing the pan adapter interface. Are you using winlink from windows or via pat/ardop?

​@@rayslinky The rear Pi runs Pat and ARDOP on the 7100 - we don't bring a Windows machine along. Pat's web UI is open to the WiFi network so you can read/write the email on your phone/laptop. Been meaning to program something very basic in RadioConsole to be able to initiate the HF connection from that touchscreen and/or automate checking over telnet when the mobile network is present...
