I think he's mostly just entertaining here. Though he did say "... and I was supposed to be his stand-in" which leads me to believe he was referring to people calling him "the next bird." I think he's acknowledging how great Charlie Parker was and how impossible it is to fill those shoes, so to speak.

One of Birds special qualities was how fast he could play. What made it even more unique however was that if you slow down his blazingly fast improvised solo's they sound like beautiful ballads. Cannon probably assumed that his audience of that day would be more impressed by the former than the latter.

(I myself try to so honor - in my awkward way - with daily practice on my alto.) But there IS a spirit higher than bebop. I found this out, the hard way. I was lost in a cult, and lost with drug abuse, and Jesus alone pulled me out. This is why I make a "corrective" comment like I did.
