I recently made a video on Metroidvanias I thought people should play and Blasphemous was recommended to me over 100 times. So I played it. Here's what I thought. I played this on XBox One, using the most recent version of the game (as of August 2020) that includes The Stir of Dawn DLC .
#Blasphemous #GameKitchen #metroidvania
Blasphemous was played on and XBox One S and recorded using the system recorder. Music comes from the game soundtrack.

Never thought I'd actually be disturbed by a 2D Metroidvania with a 16-bit aesthetic but then Blashemous came along.

Game Kitchen, the developer, is from my hometown, Seville, at the south of Spain. Most art in the game is inspired in our locals, especially from the baroque period, maybe the most characteristic from our art. There's a lot of inspiration in our holy week specially. You should take a look to our bridge of Triana, or the Cordoba mosque. I'm sure they'll be familiar for anyone who played the game. About the game? Not my favourite Metroidvania, and I HATED the spikes too. But it's worth a play.

Seconding the post of my fellow citizen. It's not the best metroidvania game out there but is at least a good one and the aesthetics and combat are great.

@@mintmag8748 The devs have said they talked to the Catholic folks who still perform the rituals/festivals sorta related to some stuff in the game and those folks said they loved the game. Seems like a tribute to compassionate secular culture in Spain that non-religious developers can make such a game and the religious folks don't react negatively.

Same! I got right into it after thinking Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit, Super Mario, Sonic were a relic of my yesteryear. They still are, but Blasphemous pulled me in for a good 2 weeks or so. Didn't love it, but didn't hate it. I pushed myself to get the majority of secrets and PS trophies through gritted teeth. I tend to think I love the grimess of it all. Reminds me a bit of the oppressiveness of the old PSX game, Vagrant Story... I had the same thing with Sekiro. Hate the on paper mechanics of Souls-likes, after only ever playing the first 2 hours of Bloodborne and fucking hating it! Rage-quitting and will never play it again! But was able to Platinum Sekiro under self-applied duress, lol. Finished Sword Saint Isshin twice.

The point about how relic abilities are based around the environment rather than the player is one of my favorite points to bring up when I talk about this game (aside from the cultural influences). I think those abilities are so unique and fascinating and add a lot of depth to the gameplay, and it's something that I haven't seen nearly enough people bring up in a meaningful way, so I was really glad to see that specifically mentioned here! Unlocking the golden cloth that allows you to fall down what appeared to be bottomless pits to the areas below was totally mind-blowing for me.

the parry makes the combats so much easier, you can beat almost anything without moving just by parrying and countering i can't believe you didn't use this vital mechanic xD also i loved the platform sequences i went through during my first run, and have mastered Miriam's challenges it requires time to figure out a few things but once you get used to the movement system, any challenge becomes almost easy, as if developpers knew how players would move across certain areas i noticed the level design to be very well done in terms of how to get from room to room, without giving much opportunity to break sequences and i find it cool to see things i can only get later by going around and activating something

Being italian i've been obsessed with the cruder aspect of catholic/christian imagery since i was a child..this game was made for me. I still remember being 10-11 years old, and reading the "Inferno" chapter of the divine comedy..those mental images of heretics being forced to spend eternity entombed in graves filled with fire..both scared me and captured me, and since then i ve been craving for that kind of imagery to be well captured in a videogame..and while stuff like Diablo 1 and Hexen: Beyond heretic came close..they were never really focused on that style of imagery 100%, but more on a vague rendition of christian inspired demonic themes. Highly reccomend

I figure you've probably heard this a lot already, but The Game Kitchen's previous title, The Last Door, is an absolutely outstanding game, and one of my personal favorites to date. I think it might be your kind of game too, though you seem to have a lot more experience with this sort of thing than I do, so I guess I'm not sure. It's a point and click adventure/psychological horror game that I think is fantastically immersive and downright terrifying at times. I believe it is inspired by the works of E.A. Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, and like their stories (or at least my experience of the ones I've read), it is a slow descent into madness and otherworldly horrors. The soundtrack, art style, storyline, and pretty much everything about The Last Door has left enough of a lasting impression on me, personally, that it never seems to be far from my thoughts and I can't recommend it enough. Also, speaking of old literature, I think it would be awesome to hear more about your thoughts on The Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost. My copy of The Divine Comedy is sadly just perpetually collecting dust as I always find myself too busy with school, or work, or life and stuff to dedicate the time to reading it along side a page by page interpretation guide of sorts to help me understand the archaic writing style. I also really really want to read Paradise Lost, and already have a personal notion of the story that seems to be a lot like the topics of your essays, but I've heard it's just as difficult to read, and haven't touched it yet either. Not sure if you would ever do a video on something like that, or perhaps just share some stuff from your essays somehow, but I am deeply interested in those works and would really love to know what you have to say on the matter.

Will give it some time before I jump back in to explore the DLC that is only accessible in a NG+. I agree difficulty is subjective and I didn't find it all that difficult. Then again, we are playing after multiple patches which balance the game and fix the map which I heard was atrocious. You can also rid your guilt for free after a paltry 5000 currency donation to the church in town, ridding you of needing those confessor statues. I immediately sought other games like this but seems I've already completed most of them. :(

I didn't even realize I could get rid of my guilt at the church until I had already finished the game and just went back to get more footage for the video.

This is silly but I was just watching an 80s Italian horror movie called StageFright, and I noticed you have a resemblance to the main character played by the actress Barbara Cupisti. It's an awesome movie though, and the director Soavi also did a gothic zombie movie called Cemetery Man starring Rupert Everett that is amazing.

I told you. Glad you liked it. You might have pointed out that you played Blasphemous with its free DLC "Stir of Dawn", but other than that, great review to a great game. I didn't find Blasphemous difficult either and even if I didn't mind the spike pits too much, I can understand why some people hate them. Hopefully, I come around to play the DLC as well sometime in the near future. The last time I checked my installation, the DLC wasn't available. Maybe it's time exclusive to Steam, I have the GOG version?

I got this earlier this year, I didn't get it during launch since I was busy with a lot of other games, even though the trailers and art-style intrigued me. I'm glad I eventually got it, I beat it over a week with about the same result as you had, about 98% of the map with 19 hours of gameplay. It surprised me that the devs released a free expansion recently, all the more reason to dive back in. All-in-all I was quite happy with this game, out of the ones that borrow some mechanics from the Souls games I thought this was one of the more forgiving ones combat-wise and also easier and faster to get started.

I agree! Hearing a game referred to as Souls-like really does nothing for me, but I liked this one.

@@Cannotbetamed1 I don't mind the Souls games per se (although I never finished any of them) but at this point too many studios have dipped their toes into this territory. It's getting stale to hear the description it's a "souls-like but...", usually followed by one or two small differentials. It doesn't do anything for me. That's where I found that Blasphemous did well, it has some inspiration, but it's closer to a Metroidvania than a Souls. It blends those elements well enough, it became more distinctive as a result.

I gotta be honest, sometimes I like that you keep dying to get your body back, it is satisfying when you do get it back. I really found it fun in Diablo 2 where you and buddy were trying to figure out how to get your body back. But I can see how it can be frustrating too.

I got into this thanks to an xbox sale for $7. Don’t regret it cause it awesooome. Never expected souls like and metroidvania would mesh very fucking well mixed with a aesthetic that I don’t see often in video games. Will admit one thing that did drive me a little nuts was some stuff, while not often, had that issue of being brutally cryptic. The thing for making vines being a very example as it’s really damn essential to exploration. Without it you are locked out of a lot of shortcuts and areas…and you have to find three items two in a different area than another, find big talking egg, give it all of them. Take egg, find tree, put it in tree then leave, come back get hatched egg. Then go back to the hub and go to guy in the fountain and boom. Now you got the thing that makes vines sprout out. If it was required to beat the game, that would of made it worse. Just glad I looked up a guide on it in ng+ cause I never would of figured it out >.

Love this game. Of the 30+ MVs and MV-lites I've played, this is my #6 favorite! Yes, I raged plenty of times for the same reasons as you. But also, the boss fights, map design, narrative, aesthetic, lore, character progression, MV elements, etc were all just so great, imo. I really wanna play the DLC, but don't wanna have to replay the entire game on a higher difficulty just for it. :(

@@Cannotbetamed1 So, this is my more subjective list. Taking into account the entire experience, not just the MV elements/mechanics (i.e. Hollow Knight is probably the objectively best MV I've ever played. But...just didn't quite have the same effect as these others). And, like I said, includes MV-lites. So it’s a bit unfair to Blasphemous since some of the games aren’t “true” MVs lol. Also the debate of if 2D matters or not… And my own personal debate if namesake MVs (actual Metroid and Castlevania games) should count lol. But anyway… 5. Catmaze 4. Dead Cells 3. Sundered 2. Metroid Prime 1. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight How about yours?
