Thinking of the old freight canoes of the the greatlakes Hudson Bay Era, 22-30 foot canoes but they also had more people to paddle.

Glad to see you back and out hunting! I love your canoe hunting videos. I built a 19’ cedar strip canoe and have used it on river deer hunts here in western North Carolina. A moose hunt is just a dream at this point!

@@north61 That’s pretty brutal! The coldest I’ve ever camped was down to about 10 or 15 Fahrenheit.

The Old Town Tripper XL was (W/L/D/capacity) 41"/20'/16.5"/1700lbs according to their old catalogs. The Miramachi 20 looks to be pretty close at 40"/20'/16"/(?). No experience with either, but thought of them and dug up the Tripper XL specs since I still see those motoring around up in northern Maine. Great video as always.

I was going to get one of these but at 100+ pounds I find portaging too hard...just like my Mac Sport 18. At 84 pounds the 18 foot Miramichi version is quite a bit easier to solo lift.

I admire the hunts you are able to go on, and the rifles you choose to use. I would love to be able to do the same but it hasn't worked out, and my age and failing health aren't promising for the future. I have been fortunate enough to use similar firearms for the hunts I have been able to do, and I enjoy seeing your success. I hope you are able to do many more hunts, and I hope to see many more of your videos. Good luck on your hunts.

@north61 I've hunted moose in Alaska in a Grumman Sport Boat w/ a 9.8 outboard. You're right-freeboard is your friend, and you have to pack the boat like you would for a through-hike. I went heavy my first trip, and I'm glad I didn't get a moose. It would have taken 2-3 trips to get it all out. Even with a light camp (50 lbs or so), I'm at about 450 lbs w/ me, engine, and fuel. The boat is only rated to 1k lbs, and there will be no freeboard left. 550 lbs of moose meat is a smalllll moose. A lot of guys up here have gone to inflatable rafts because they will haul more.

I'll keep my gear and food at 100 pounds for the next trip, 60 pounds if solo. Then add 100 pounds of motor and gas and 450 pounds of people. That's 650 pounds +700 pounds of moose = 1350 pounds. The Mac-Sport 18 will do it. The Miramichi 18 will do a solo moose trip with 265 pounds(me and clothes)+60 pounds solo gear + 75 pounds motor and gas = 400pounds + 700 pounds of moose = 1100 pounds.

I would love to try a canoe trip at some point in life. How do people bring more than one canoe along? I guess there just too many people out and about anymore in those river systems with their jetboats. It kinda makes the place not as wild.
@alaskanshannon2683
@alaskanshannon2683 Жыл бұрын
Jet boats are very popular. They can haul more, go faster, and go in water almost as shallow as a canoe.

They go in as a party and hunt one moose on water that is rough and keeps people less skilled away. Unfortunately things are getting more busy here. 10 years ago I had some spots were I never saw people. Now.... I am going to have to learn some new tricks as people are flooding the easy lakes and rivers.

Does away with the wonderful simplicity that makes canoes special. Thinking though of running two canoes Catamaran style for really big water.
