I made tons of money with this lens, its absolutely a stunning lens. And cheap on used market too...

The difference between f/4 and f/2.8 is only one stop. You won’t notice it in most situations. You can easily make it up with the IS or shutter speed/ISO.
@jake13696 Жыл бұрын
Depends what you shoot though! F4 lenses always let me down but I shoot a lot of low light and so it makes sense.
@datfly3034 Жыл бұрын
@@jake13696 one stop is easily compensated for with contemporary digital cameras. If you’re shooting film that’s a different story.
@jake13696 Жыл бұрын
@@datfly3034 I’ve even run into issues where f2.8 isn’t enough to get a decent video that isn’t made of noise. And that was on at 17mm..
@datfly3034 Жыл бұрын
@@jake13696 what camera are you using? Maybe it’s a sensor issue? Also, with the IS in the lens, you gain at least one or two extra stops and can shoot at lower speeds.
@jake13696 Жыл бұрын
@@datfly3034 I had no IS in the lens. And I am referring to the tokina 11-20mm f2.8 back when I had my 80D. In videos my footage would become basically unusable around 6400 ISO and it wouldn’t allow me below 1/50 shutter speed. That’s at f2.8 aswell. Keeping in mind it’s probably because the types of photography I do, sometimes does not allow for a tripod or taking flashes etc (sometimes they don’t make a difference either really) Nowadays I shoot on an eos R so I find myself in that sutuation a lot less now though! 😬 unless it’s really dark and I’ve got no decent light source especially when using the 85mm too. I find myself shooting at f1.8 - f2.8 and ISO’s above 8000 in order to retain a shutter speed of like 1/60 or faster.

I do a lot of nightclubs and birthday events and F4 is perfect because I am using a flash all the time and DOF is shallow on 2.8 for most of the part that one person is in focus but the other is not, so I am mostly around 5.6 or so, and F4 does that wonderfully well for me :) and it's a lighter lens and a reasonable price.
@JoshWiniarski2 жыл бұрын
I've definitely been there! I'm guilty of shooting way too shallow on prime lenses and letting people fall out of focus. Sometimes a well-composed sharp image is far more important than getting a slightly shallower depth of field.

The comment i was looking for. Would you recommend this lens over the sigma 18-35mm F1.8 canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8?
@drbeardo69602 ай бұрын
Got my 16-35 f4 last weekend just before a weekend trip Fun shooting with it New dimension added to my photography style, got to upgrade my skills more on composition Now I understand wide angle lenses help us learn skills and they're just super creative than tight focal lengths

Congrats on your lens. I’m looking to get it. I saw it for about $400 on bestbuy, open box. Im still undecided, im in between this lens or Canon 17-55mm f2.8 Sigma 18-35mm f1.8

who said nobody want an F4 in their kit??? f4 is awesome. All the f2.8 lenses are way heavier and more expensive. whether you need big aperture depends a lot of what you are shooting.

Great video! Also, what are your thoughts on a similar type of lens for aps-c which is the Sigma 18-35mm?
@JoshWiniarski3 жыл бұрын
The Sigma 18-35 is a GREAT lens for APS-C. Although the focal length sounds similar, with the crop factor it isn't quite as wide, but the fast aperture is incredible for APS-C cameras!

If it is just for the EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM - then most certainly: Hell yeah! It is stuck to the front of my body right now. Haven't found a single time where I would prefer the f/2.8 over this, just to lose the IS and gain who knows. Neither of them is bad, but I can always crank up the ISO one more notch on the f/4, and no one will be able to tell the difference. If I ever find that I need a more shallow depth of field, then I have either a 50mm, or a 100mm or a 135mm. I know that I will have to sacrifice something (field of view for example) when doing so, but I'm fine with that if it ever happens.

Most of the time I like to underexpose my images to save as much detail as possible which I can manually bring out via lightroom. F4 is great. As long as you do not want to shoot Bokeh. When I travel, I normally travel to hot countries and F11-16 are my favorite F stops. Anywhere between these F stops. I do not use a 2.8 in low light situations, I would use my RF Cnaon 1.8 35mm. I personally think 2.8 is neither bright or dark. If you want Bokeh then 2.8 is not enough. 1.8 or lwoer is more ideal. I wouldnt know why would someone not buy this instead of the RF version. It is a rip off.

Is this lens only suitable for full frame, or can it also work well on the 70D?
@JoshWiniarski3 жыл бұрын
This lens will totally work on the 70D, however, you're not getting the most out of it. Because, this lens is for a full-frame sensor the 70D's smaller sensor won't even utilize all of the glass (in other words, this lens is overkill). For much cheaper, I'd consider something like a Canon EF-S 10-18 or even the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 (which will let in a lot more light). The only real reason to buy this for a crop sensor camera is if you plan on upgrading to a full-frame in the future and don't want to deal with replacing lenses. It'll work great on your 70D, but there are cheaper lenses that will work just as good. Hope this helps!

I very much enjoyed your review Josh. I really liked how you highlighted your points with actual shots. Nicely done. I've got the F4 and if I 'read between the lines', it should be fast enough if I want to try some astrophotography. Any thoughts or advice on settings? My guess is the 500 rule should apply but at F4, thoughts on what ISO to start out at? Thanks so much

I just purchased this lens. Why are the objects so blurry? I have tried so many settings for interior photos and compared to my Tamron 28-75mm. Set on 28 mm same settings the Tamron is much sharper. How and why?? So frustrating.

Hey awesome vid! Just curious have you ever dealt with the rattling noise of the auto focus ruining a video shot with the f/4?
@JoshWiniarski2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes. When I first got the lens I thought it'd be a lot worse than it actually is. If you use a wireless lav or boom pole it won't matter, and honestly when vlogging it doesn't matter much but if you're filming in a silent room and heavily using autofocus it'll be super noticeable. Definitely depends on your style of filmmaking but most lenses have some autofocus noise.
