Thanks for this video, Julia, and emphasizing the message that one can still get great photos from a seemingly bland location. And you’re very smart to shoot at f2 with this lens. The 50 1.2 imho is very soft wide open, at least at wider apertures.

Hi Julia. I really enjoy your content, so thank you for taking the time to post these videos. Is there a reason why you don't shoot wide open on the 50mm f1.2 ?
@RavenfluxASMR6 жыл бұрын
Lenses are not at their sharpest when they are wide open. Usually theyre sharpest 2 to 3 stops from their widest. So a f1.2 is sharpest between f2-f4 and an f2 is sharpest between f2.8-f5.6

if you are doing a photo shoot like this, is it just for your and model's portfolio? if so, do you - as a photographer - pay to make-up artist and model? are you doing sometimes TFP photo shoots?
@ZedExGaming6 жыл бұрын
when I've done photoshoots with models for our portfolios I either work tfp or they pay me
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
Usually the model will pay the photographer to get updated or specific photos they might need for their book! The only time I can think of a photographer paying a model is if you want to specifically take photos of someone who is already working full time and doesn't need "updated" photos for their book as they already get new photos to share with the jobs they do :)
@pandayamitray16 жыл бұрын
Model is too getting exposure through her. Pun intended 😊
@klararotenmayer71865 жыл бұрын
I'm amateur photographer and I'm pretty poor myself for paying any models so i just work with girls that arent models but like posing and are pretty. They get cool photos and i get a good model. Ofc if someone wants book photos they pay me.

Love your work! You manage the highlights so we'll. Are you always shooting to preserve the highlights and bringing shadows up in post? If so, how do you keep the shadows looking so clean after lifting them? About how many stops under are you shooting. I like when you show before and after edits, also. Thanks for sharing.
@juliatrotti4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yep I usually shoot to preserve the highlights as much as possible without compromising the shadows too much. At first I used the histogram to make sure I'm not crushing anything, after a few years of using the same camera though I can tell by eye if I'm pushing something too far haha
@dapnoyqpid6 жыл бұрын
Another amazing video Julia…and Dan ;-) ! I'm just curious, but why do you like to shoot at f2?
@milankollar47806 жыл бұрын
Joseph Pancho its because the canon 50mm f1.2 is really soft at 1.2 and at f2 its fine. I have the canon 50mm f1.2 so I know how it is.
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I normally like to shoot at 1.2, but for this shoot I wanted extra crisp photos haha so I decided to shoot at 2 :) I thought the slight extra sharpness would really suite the lighting and location we were working with.
@deborahtaylor79026 жыл бұрын
Thanks Julia..so for the most part,when shooting models that may be moving,dancing etc your shutter speed would need to be high through out the shoot correct?

@@blackentrepreneur244 I definitely agree and have the 1.8 and 5d ii. But u know some times we lust after gears. Especially those with red rings lol.

you're not gonna use 1.2 that much anyways so you're fine with 1.8
@markharris57715 жыл бұрын
BlackEntrepreneur24 Totally agree. I’m doing an analogue 365 project and I’m only allowed to use the 50mm f1.8 on an EOS 2000nf using TMax 400. My second favourite lens after my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is my Jupiter 50mm f2. Cameras and lenses are tools, like a painter's brushes are. The idea is to know you lenses and what they will do.

Nice photos. I have a question about how you make decisions when cropping your images. I see that you use a little different technique than the usual crop where lines go inwards to like tighten the model a little?
@juliatrotti5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I usually only crop if I framed the model off centre a little bit (my personal style is to centre the model in the frame) or if the negative space is too much, as sometimes you have a different impression of negative space when you're shooting vs seeing the images on a bigger screen on the computer :)
