the f1.8 is great for video but as a beauty vlogger you might need extra lighting equipment compared to the f1.4 which does better in the same low lighting conditions
@ESKATEUK2 жыл бұрын
Best comparison of these two lenses I have seen, you covered everything. I’ve owned both of these lenses and while the 1.8 is good the 1.4 is better in nearly every way, so I did find it frustrating when certain reviewers were claiming the f1.8 was better just because it was a tad sharper in the middle when wide open. The vignetting and the softness at the edge of the pictures on the f1.8 is hard to look past, whereas the f1.4 is crystal clear and bright from edge to edge. Also as you’ve shown on video there really is a drastic difference in brightness between the two lenses. The 50mm f1.8 is a great lens and can take some great pictures, no doubt about it. But the f1.4 is just that level above. Just wish I had the money to afford the f1.2 L lens… Thankyou, great review.

Yeah it seems like the issue is when they are using charts. 1.4 seems to do worse than the 1.8 when it comes to high contrast situations where the newer 1.8 stm shine. But in real world use the 1.4 seems to work better.

I want to get back on making KZbin videos, but also have something suitable for my Instagram pictures. I know both are a great fit, but would one be a better match than the other for my goals and the kind of model I’m getting?

I much appreciate this detailed yet succinct comparison. I've been using my 50mm STM lens a lot, and although valuing it's good qualities, wishing for better. I don't want to carry the hefty Sigma f/1.4 around with all my other gear, and so it is good to know that the Canon f/1.4 is definitely a step up in image quality from the 1.8.

Both STM & USM use full time manual focus, the one you talking maybe the old 1.8 lens, i own all these 3 lenses
@tylermai14364 жыл бұрын
@@iamfyrus they are both full time manual focusing lenses, its just the STM 1.8 is focused electronically (by wire) meaning if you disconnect the lens from the camera you can't change your focus, compared to the usm which has mechanical focus that allows you to focus with power to the lens, this is good if you are using extension tubes which doesn't provide power to the lens when you are shooting macro because you can still change your focus where as you can not with focus by wire.

One thing I was hoping you would have mentioned was noise, how loud is the 50 STM compared to the 85? I have the mark 1 50 1.8 and its so incredibly loud and slow, I wouldnt mind upgrading but dont want to if its still fairly loud. I use it now on a 5D Classic and a 5D Mark IV. It doesn't hold a candle to the new over-engineered RF mount offering, but for the price - you really can't complain. The images are plenty usable and very pleasant to look at, when portraits are considered (on full-frame, anyway).

I have the ef 50mm f/1.4 and I can assure you that this lens is incredibily sharp at apertures lower than f/4. It's better than my L lens (ef 24-70mm, ef 16-35 and 70-200. Of course, it's a prime lens. In my opinion, f/2.8 is the maximum aperture that delivers an acceptable image for photograpy. 1.4 and 1.8 tend to soften the image too much.
