A quick review of my first film camera, the Canon AE-1. A SLR (Single-Lens Reflex) designed in the 70s and sold through the 80s, this continues to be one of the most popular film cameras today. I've had mine (my dad's) for over 40 years with absolutely no problems besides a broken battery cover that I swapped out (and broke again) myself. Enjoy!

Hello, I have one, but I don't understand how to use the light meter or how to expose correctly :/ How do you do it if yours is broken? Could you recommend information about it, thank you very much :D

Kelly Meléndrez id recommend downloading an iPhone light meter app. That will get you close enough if your meter in your camera isn’t working. If you really want to invest in an external light meter it’s a great purchase. This is the one I use and love www.amazon.com/dp/B00007E89K/?ref=exp_tonywodarck_dp_vv_mw

In it were Canon AE-1, Minolta 7000, Canon T50 different lenses, and a flash. AE-1 has become my fav. 35mm film camera going to hopefully pick up a motor drive for it soon.

Hi Tony, thanks for your dynamic introduction to this camera! Has been a huge success for Canon once. If users try to give tips for using the camera (tutorial or quick) they usually describe the body from the outside - Changing film, using self timer, exchange lenses. In the 1970ies the competition was about exposing automatic. Most of the producers (Minolta, Pentax, Nikon, Contax etc.) worked with aperture priority, what was easier to realize and I think more versatile. Canon starting with EF (1973) chose shutter priorty with an ambititious construction especially for the lenses. It was the exception among the cameras on the market. Minolta XD 7 (1977) and Canon A 1 (1978) finally let this competition behind. Why not having your followers taking a look through the viewfinder and reflecting about these alternatives? Best wishes

Thanks Klaus. My goal is to get beginners over the edge into taking film photos for their first time. Getting in to the nuances of aperture priority and shutter priority can get complicated. The way I learned how to shoot film some 20 years ago now was by learning the triangle (shutter, aperture, iso). If I can get people to purchase their first camera and explain to them how to use it on manual, the nice features of cameras can come later, once they realize how they like to shoot. Hope that makes sense.

The Squeak never bothered me, my first Canon was the Canon A-1 Black body stolen, second another Canon A-1 Black Body, that was stolen also, third Canon A-1 I bought in the digital age a few years ago, it has the signature sound, probably a Squeak, but I like it. I bought a Canon AE-1 for a little over $100, it came with lenses, a flash, and a super lightweight tripod. What I like about film photography is that the photographs are super sharp and clean. I like this video.

Great video, i’m saving up for one. Also, your pictures are pretty cool. I was wondering why they seem a little more digital, I’ve seen other pictures that have this visual thing that makes them look older. Do you get that effect depending on the iso or the film you’re using?
@TonyWodarck
@TonyWodarck 3 жыл бұрын
Portra gives really nice colors and clarity. If you want that “film look” you may want to try some expired film or cheaper films. Also underexposing your film a tad tends to give that muddy film look too. Expired film can give your photos more of a vintage look too. I’m trying to make photos that feel true to life and timeless, not just photos that look like they were shot on film. Hope that makes sense.

I shot a lot of film with some eos cameras, then moved on to well used higher end Canon digitals, I don’t do much anymore, but I just purchased a beautiful refurbished AE-1 and am hoping to rekindle my interest with film. It’s so much more involved, you have to think about your shot and settings. With digital you see it and can change and re-shoot. I can’t wait! Thanks for the great video

That just happens to be the very model I began with back in 1992. I bought it along with a 50mm f1.8, and an 85mm f2 on consignment at a camera shop. The only problem it had was using a flash (hot shoe was shot). Otherwise, I shot hundreds of rolls with it. The display would blank out on me sometimes but wtf ever it was a great beginners camera!

Because I am a lazy ass I decided to use a Canon A-1 as my first film camera. A simple switch between aperture priority and aperture priority was too tempting. AE-1 would have been my second choice but there is really no better camera to start filming with.

Yeah I learned on this camera in manual and by the time I realized how to use the shutter priority I had already broken the light meter. I had to take the top plate off to fix the battery cover and when I put it back together I believe I messed up the ISO dial so the light meter doesn’t work. Not worth fixing cause I never use it anyways.

I found mine at the thrift store next to my moms house about a year ago for I think 20? My girlfriend asked why I wanted a camera since I have the newer Polaroid instax mini. Long story short, my memory is getting worse and I don’t want to lose them, especially of my first daughter. That and I just love film cameras.

I loved my Ae-1 until I realized that the manual priority mode is terrible. The camera doesn't have a match needle metered manual mode, in which it only flashes you the aperture it thinks it's correct for the appropriate shutter speed.
@TonyWodarck

Caldera what did you experience bad about the meter? It would underexpose your images? I’ve always used an external meter so I’m not really sure how good or bad it is.

@@TonyWodarck If you set the aperture ring off 'A' and select an aperture you want like f1.8, the Ae-1 meter doesn't tell you your selected aperture on the lens ring. To counteract this, I just set my shutter speed to get the aperture I originally wanted but then that defeats the purpose of manual priority. I want to select both the aperture and shutter speed in manual mode on my own but the Ae-1 doesn't allow that unfortunately. My exposures has been ok though with the workaround.
@TonyWodarck

Caldera yep gotcha. I know what you’re saying. I think the camera was designed for people to throw the aperture on auto and let people shoot shutter priority. For a full manual experience the light meter isn’t great. I think they changed the meter in the AE-1 program. May be worth looking in to.

Some are worth trying for sure. The 85 1.2 in particular is incredible. I've heard mixed reviews on the 50, the 24 is highly coveted but hard to find and I haven't heard much about the 35. In my opinion, once you feel ready to outgrow the Canon AE-1 and want to invest more in to film, it's time to step into a new body. There are great Canon FD lenses like mentioned above, but I'd recommend venturing out into different camera bodies and potentially different formats like 645 medium format.

I've been shooting with an r6 for a while now. Looking to get into film but I'm confused. ISO is in the chemistry of the film or in digital, its in the programing of the sensor, right? Say you have 400 ISO stock film, that's it, that's the chemistry, what does changing the ISO Knob do on a film camera? The roll of film isn't digital so you can't tell it to be less reactive to light, hope my thought process makes sense lol

Changing the iso dial just changed the light meter reading you’re getting in camera. Once you choose the iso like say portra 400. Nothing is going to change that. The iso is 400. Changing the iso dial will just give you improper settings.

@TonyWodarck
@TonyWodarck 4 жыл бұрын
The meter is pointing to the aperture it would use on auto. Meaning it’s the suggested aperture to shoot at based on the amount of light and the shutter chosen. If you don’t want to shoot at that aperture, change the shutter.
@jomanakenawy1844
@jomanakenawy1844 4 жыл бұрын
Tony Wodarck so basically I put it on auto and pick whichever shutter speed I want and the meter tells me which aperature to choose?
@TonyWodarck
@TonyWodarck 4 жыл бұрын
jomana kenawy if you put it on auto for aperture you only need to choose the shutter speed. I’d suggest using the light meter, choosing the aperture you want, then choose your shutter speed. Look through the meter and see if they line up. For example let’s say you want to shoot a portrait at 2.0. Choose 2.0 aperture, then choose say 1/1000 shutter speed. If the meter points to 2.0 or close to it, go ahead and shoot. If it’s way off, adjust your shutter and try again. By shooting this way, fully manual, you’ll start to learn metering better and really learn how your settings work.
