I recently bought a BMPCC 6k. Added a Tilta cage and power handle using sony F970 batteries. Awesome. Using Samsung 2 TB SSD. Killer. Over 3 1/2 hours at 5.1 braw. Oh how I love the BRAW. Matched with DaVinci Resolve for grading and editing. Killer combo. Not perfect, but wow, nothing comes close for the bucks. Oh, Canon 24-105 stabilized lens. 1 touch auto focus works. Love the focus edge highlights.

Hi Sara great video. One thing i would like to mention. I own both the C200 and the Pocket 6k as you exactly describe at the end. C200 as my main, pocket 6k as my B camera. However I am easily able to match them up in resolve using Color Space Transform. It's a feature right in resolve that will make any log format behave like another log format of your liking. So what i do is take the c200s log profile and turn them Blackmagic's film log then simply drop my custom pocket 6k Lut and they match almost perfectly. I made a video on color space transform on my own channel. You can check it out if you want.

My 2 cents, having both cams, C200 is for work (autofocus, ND's, easy codecs, battery, screens, durability, etc) and BMPCC6k is for passion projects (OMG that image, and use even using cheep Rokinon manual cine-lenses). Both cams are awesome, but if you make a living shooting video for commercial purposes, the C200 is still the better option (especially if you're a canon glass user). Great video, love the channel, cheers!

It's now been 18 months since this video. The new BM 6K Pro, with it's ND's, tiltable screen and better codecs is slowly inching towards crossing that line. All for the same price as the previous BM6K. I'd say they're going to sell a ton of them.

@@4seeableTV that pro model fixes most of my issues. I dont have it yet, but definitely a contender. Auto focus is probably still a bummer on it, but if they ever get that close to the canon cams, it would be an unbelievably versatile cam for all pro work.

I looked at both cameras for cinema work. I was coming from the Canon C100 with Atomos recorder. I went with the BMPCC 6k because, even when I added the Samsung T5s and the Vmount battery solution, I ended up with a camera that will do what I need for less than $3k. That is ridiculously cheap. I have taken on the Resolve learning curve, but with KZbin, that hasn't taken much to do the things I want to do. Now, for transparency, I was using a HitFilm Pro to edit and all of the plugins were open-source which Resolve can use. So total win on my side once I figured out how nodes best work in my workflow. Love the Canon for when I needed autofocus for events, but now I am doing more cinematic and talking head work. Black Magic makes sense for me and I love it. (I actually have both the 4k and the 6k... why don't they both shoot 4k in Braw?)

Quickest way to match colors between two outstanding and comparable cameras is to use a color chart. Resolve does a wonderful job in mitigating any color skew different manufacturers have and just give you the proper color using charts from many of the best brands out there. X-Rite Colorchecker Passport is my go-to. Then all you need to do is copy and paste your tweaked color grades to the matching camera clips with minimal tweaking.

Great video! I'd love to get a C200 but the codecs are a bit of a dealbreaker for me. Canon's RAW light is anything but, those files are HUGE, and the only alternative is 8-bit 4:2:0. The middle ground I'd use more often is sorely lacking. 10-bit 4:2:2 is the industry standard nowadays and not including it only to protect the C300 II sales is kind of a dick move from Canon.

I have the Ursa Mini Pro and have been undecided on the BMPC 6k or just get another Ursa Mini Pro G2 for my A and use my URSA Mini Pro for my B camera. Honestly, I'm lucky to be busy. I do not have time to color grade raw footage from every Client we shoot for. I'm leaning towards the G2 so I can switch to video mode and deliver ProRes HQ 4,4,4and XQ raw footage that Client's are used to seeing, and also for the form factor, internal ND filters and the pro inputs & outputs which enables me to use them in studio. I can connect both to AC and connect both the G1 & G2 to 4K switchers. To me the BMPC 6k is a 3rd or C camera for run and gun when you do not want to carry the big beast. Cool video though! I will go for the Ursa Mini Pro G2 over the C200 just because it's the closest match to my Ursa Mini Pro. Subscribed!

SEVEN STEPS to save a CRAP TON of TIME... So this might be a few weeks late, but perhaps it could save you time in the future by making a matching 3D LUT in Resolve for different camera combos. I recommend doing this even with the same cameras but with different lenses that aren't designed to be perfectly matched. Step 1: Shoot a few seconds at the beginning of your clips with a color checker chart. Note down your white balance, color space, gamma profiles for each camera setup. Step 2: Import your footage into your editing NLE of choice (Premier, Finale Cut) and take a screen shot of the color checker with the respective cameras. (This part is important as sometimes the footage looks different depending on the NLE its been imported into.) Step 3: Bring screenshots into Resolve. Step 4: At the bottom left corner of your monitor window, click color chart, then select the color match tab (looks like little chart icon). Step 5: Select the chart brand you are using and fill in your gamma info, color space, and temp. Stretch the chart template over your screenshot. Hit match. Step 6: Right click on the clip template and select "Generate 3D LUT (cube)". Rinse and repeat with all camera setups. Step 7: Go back to your editing NLE and apply this LUT to the respective camera/lens/scene combos for an almost perfect match. You will likely need to slightly adjust the contrast in highlights and shadows. Unless you shoot in the same studio with the same conditions, I find that I need to do this anytime there is a scene change/change in lighting, but it takes a lot of the guesswork out in matching colors. So yeah, totally possible to use that Sony as a B cam to your Blackmagics... 🤷‍♂️

Jon Joy-Gaba Good tips. But I’m not sure about the screenshot step-I’d be inclined to skip it and match color in Resolve (or whatever editor/color corrector you’re going to use) because on many operating systems a screen grab converts the image into 8-bit, so the color accuracy drops by 5X to 20X-even though you can’t *see* it. But that’s just a small point... Your advice is super helpful for anyone wanting to skip the circus insanity that can come with trying to match two different cameras by eye alone.

Sure, I'd like more pixels for stills, but you can get by with 12. Sure, it would be great if it had built-in ND filters, but neither does the BMPCC unless you step up to the 6K Pro version. Not that I have the money for any of this, so my Olympus E-M1 Mark II and my Lumix G85 make a great budget options.

1) BRAW is less data intense than prores. 2) C-fast cards are way cheaper than that if you go to a less known brand.

Thanks for the video. Is it possible to use canon's EF-S lenses on the blackmagic pocket 6K?

I shoot KZbin with the BMPCC4K... No continuous Auto Focus has been the biggest PITA (same as BMPCC6K). Especially since you get like 20min from a LP-E6 so wasting time checking focus on yourself chews into that! However, gotta say having the option of BRAW and ProRes from the BMPCC4K is killer, and works great for bigger projects. My review on a Robot Vaccum which had a tonne of B-Roll was 350GB of files by the end 😢😭 So you get that awesome quality... but really pay for it in data and PC performance.

Both cameras produce awesome footage. I have to give the advantage to the C200. You still can't go wrong with either camera.

This is my favorite color grade I have seen anyone do on a C200. really considering this camera and always felt other youtube's grade were just lame. Not enough punch, yours looks beautiful I just wanted to encourage you and say thank you.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was just comparing the two cameras this week and trying to decide which one would be a better fit. I was leaning towards Canon because of autofocus, but after watching this I'm leaning towards the bmpcc. Thank you again!

I think that your video taken by BMPCC 6K was very shaking just liked my video taken in Japan. I recommend you to buy some lenses with IS, such as Tamron 11-20/3.5-4.5 vc and 24-70/2.8 vc. Those are very cheap lenses and the effect of IS are pretty good! I just bought them and they do very help me to make some smooth videos even just by handheld!

Yeah, I'm one of those guys who has a different preference on exposure. Not a big fan of punchy shadows, at least not for overcast daytime shots. Always went light/soft on shadows for anything overcast. Still like the color though. P.s. Still waiting on a C100 mkiii or as7iii.

1:59 "Which is RAW, but some people say it's not really RAW." "Is it real RAW?" So it's... seared? 😂🐟 Oh, and you're 100% right about CFAST 2.0 cards. I run a 1DXII, and my last wedding was nearly 1TB of footage (lots of 4K-60)! Great comparison, you two!

Absolutely fantastic video Sara and Scott!! Such a brilliant look into not just how the cameras compare, but also a look into what one should be thinking about when they are deciding on the equipment for their projects! This is a silly question but, what do you think of the Blackmagic Pocket 4k/6k battery grip they made?

C200 is effortlessly cinematic. But for cheaper price BM does the job well. Not as good as c200 no matter how you post process it but it is fine.
