Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM clean the lens inside

Awesome video! I just wanted to let you know that I used this specific video to clean my 70-300mm f/4-5.6L. I know it’s a different lens but they are built very similar. If anyone reading this is looking for instructions, follow this video. You will see there are extra screws once you take off the top part; do not take these off. Just take off the gold washers and screws like in this video. Thank you for this video!

Very helpful. I was able to clean the inner element of a few spots. I saved a lot of time and money. The description of the double sided adhesive could be a little clearer. I did not realize what you were referring to until I had removed the first two covers.

I don't have that. I haven't had any Canon 100-400mm II lens which needed to be completely disassembled, so I don't have any video about it.

Hi! I obtained a used lens like this, there was a lot of dust behind the front element, so I cleaned it according to your instructions! All went well! Thank you! But sadly I found out, that my lens was already disassembled in the past, and all the cowers with the double sided adhesive are missing... can you give me any advise how to replace them with something?

I don't think that it is really necessary (however it keeps the dust out), but if you really want to replace them, you can buy "nylon filter net" and strong double sided adhesive tape like "3M 9448A", and adhere them on the lens.

Interesting video, I have this lens and I use it at beaches and estuaries often lying down on mud or sand where it tends to get salt and sand on it which works it's way into the zoom mechanism and also the smooth-tight ring and focus ring. Does this contaminate other parts of the lens as well as between the 1st and 2nd element and how can I clean the focus and smooth-tight rings ? Thanks Noel

You have to disassemble the lens, starting from the rear of the lens... I haven't done it before, so I don't have video of it.

I'm glad my video has helped you! You can change shutter count and serial number with SPT service software. This is not a free software. Most of the cameras are supported.

I don't know exactly, because I haven't done that before. But generally, cleaning the lenses are quite similar, I would recommend to view a few videos, then you will have a general idea how to do it.

I followed the video and screwed up. The reason is that the three screws that hold the barrel are stuck. I have a feeling they were glued. I end up damaged the screw heads. It was impossible to unscrew at least not as easy as shown in the video. I end up putting everything back and gave up. Be careful. Better send back to Canon for the cleaning.

You have to use the correct fit screwdriver -

@@TheKilyy I did use a right size screw driver. The screws had thread locker glue applied so hold very tightly. I guess Canon doesn’t want user to DIY. They don’t mind damaging the screws when they do the service because they have new screws to replace.
