Great review mate, really in-depth and detailed with good example photos and video. Nice work! I was gonna make one myself but now I reckon I can just make a short one and link to yours instead haha. I also found it very difficult to use without some sort of stabilization and I quite like the donut shaped bokeh. It's quite distracting sure, but it's something different. Which I like. Cheers

I have the equivalent lens made by Yashica 500mm f/8 with the slide in filter holder in the back of the lens. Mine is in Contax/Yashica mount and I do have an adapter to mate it to my Sony digital camera (A6600) but have not tried it out yet. It's in excellent condition with the same rubber focusing ring on the lens barrel and the sliding dew/sun shield. I have not tried it out yet even though I bought it many years ago, long before digital cameras came on the scene. 😎

Hello I have rebel t5 is takes ef lens.What adapter would I need to use to use this lens with it? I am new to cameras and this is my first camera. I know it is old but I like it. Thank you for your help.

Hi Shawn! You get a FD-EF adapter for it. Some might list it as FD-EOS EF. There might be a link to one in the description. K&f Concepts makes a very good one and they can generally be had for about $50 or so (I am doing a quick currency conversion from my own currency!). Vitrox also makes good versions, quite cheap. PS - the T5 is a great body to use vintage lenses with. If you get some M42 mount lenses (screw mount), the M42-EF converter combo works amazing and is really small, so has very little influence on camera ergonomics. Cheap Takumar (any lenses in that range is great) or Pentacon lenses (50mm is great) , or some of the old Russian lenses (Helios or Jupiter - the 58mms are great) , are great for that body.

Yes. You need an EF-FD adapter with a lens element, though. I used one with my 5D4. The quality is not too bad. Many people say its terrible, but I've A-B tested it against FD-Rs, and it stacks up reasonably well.

Yes, M42 adapts well to EF. Nikon does as well. Do not go with Pentax K for EF... just pain and suffering! Great for R mount, though.

Hey - that is quite a find! What you need is the FD-EF mount converter. With your T3i's APS-C sensor, you get a 1.6x crop (zoom) effect, so that lens will end up being a 800mm lens effectively on your camera! Here is a bunch of FD-EF adapters on Amazon that'll work: amzn.to/3rhM2jI

The FD mount has a flange distance of 42mm while the EF has a flange distance of 44mm so simple adapters won't work perfectly, you will either lose infinity focus with simple adapters or suffer worse performance because of the corrective optics in others. The problem is that for the FD lens to focus light properly on to the sensor it would have to sit two millimetres inside the EF mount itself which is obviously not possible. Luckily though, you can modify the lens mount itself to EF which will both retain infinity focus and not lose optical quality. It is more expensive, but not too difficult to do and the result is optimal. Search for FD to EF conversion kit on google and you should get some results.

I did use one with corrective optics, and on testing it wasn't as bad as I was told it would be. It depends on the quality/brand, I guess. A full conversion is obviously best and easier to use.

Hi - you can see in the samples in the video that it resolves well and is sharp, but it won't be quite as sharp as a modern 500mm. I would use it mostly for photography, as it is a challenging focal length to handle for video.
