With firmware 1.3 the AF is quite ok. I purchased this camera for my Dad, and now I want this one for myself. Low light images are surprisingly good and so is the dynamic range and image quality in general. Perfect for kids events-indoor gig, prize giving, graduation, etc. If you think about it, what is an alternative that has a built-in ND filter, stabilisation, 24-100 f1.8-2.4? All of that in a truly portable package. :)

I recently bought a used G7X II for $200 for my wife. I was planning to get a ZV-1 for myself as I do videos alot. But I was so impressed by G7X II that I got a G7X III for myself. 😂

I was using the G7X Mark II and upgraded to the M50. I really missed the portability of the camera and mainly went with the M50 for use of the external mic. Now I just may go to the Mark III for when I am out and about! Great review as always!

The Sony is nice when it works. I’ve had RX100iii, Rx100iv, and RX100V. No, I got them not because I’m rich and bought a newer model when it came out. I got a newer model because the old one started having problems. Always the flash was the first to stop working because it’s thin and fragile power supply lines broke. Then the autofocus followed. I always set the image quality fairly high, about 10M for each photo on average. The result was excellent even when the images were blown up to fill a 65” TV. Now all the photos I take look good on the camera but grainy on a 17” notebook, looking more like 2M photos. I checked the property of these photos and they all still occupied an average of 10M space each. I really like the overall performance of RX100 series over Canon cameras although I always prefer the color of the Canon. Now I realize that I have to start to argue why I have to buy a new Sony in less than two years. I’m going to get a Canon this time and see if it lasts longer. I sold my 7D and bought the M50 because it is easier to travel with. It is a stunning piece of kit at the price. Added a nifty 50, 22mm and 18-150 plus 470AI speed light. Would think in most cases this would still be a better option than G7 X II.

Great video my friend i did have the the canon G7 x mark ii, i sold it after my trip in Thailand which i regret big time,so now im not sure to buy the mark ii again or the mark iii or the Cannon M50, last trip to Thailand i took my cannon 77d,with my 3 lenses travelling,with that amount of gear was to much. I think I answered this somewhere else. i was referencing the overheating, I recorded for 30 minutes (it stopped) started recording again for 30 minutes (stopped again) started recording again (this was an overheating test). If you have an external recorder, you can record for much longer because the camera isn't really "recording" just passing the signal.

And just like you said- I find some of the specs a huge step forward, while others- quite dissapointing. Lack of 24fps and no dual pixel af are really strange ones to me. You bring up an interesting point about "informed consumers". Your average person is not going to know about some of these items and may have different expectations. I always understand why companies don't "add" a feature (cost). But I am curious about why they remove one... Especially one that would seem to be software-based rather than hardware-based. (btw - great discussion).

IMO, the DPAF is different because I can see it costing more money to implement. It's still "adding" a feature. but if a camera can record at 25,30,50,60fps... then the only thing you need is to enable that with software (unless I'm so wrong - at which point, Canon, please tell me).

10 minute video limit, no 24/25 fps mode, no dual point AF - may as well get a decent SL2/200d kit with additional ND filters for the same or better price - plus as a content creator and streamer - the LCD screen on the SL2 is far more practical. So many negatives that outweigh many if not all of the pros - and really I can probably get sufficient 4K capability from my osmo pocket anyway - as I don't need 4K much right now

Good points. There is 25fps by the way and it has a clean HDMI out which would allow you to record for a very long time. I do like the fully articulating screen on the SL2. The SL3 would be a good match because it has similar frame rates (except for 120fps) and a clean hdmi out. I'm not sure where this camera fits in.

@@TechGearTalk for me, the SL3 gets eliminated because of local pricing - it's almost AUD$300 more than getting an SL2 - I can live with the noisy HDMI of the SL2 - my overlays in OBS cover up 95% of the extraneous info, Because the Osmo pocket is actually a huge asset for my needs, that allows me to focus on gainingexperience with an entry level DSLR again

If they had just added DPAF it would make more sense because there are definitely thing it can do that a phone can't do (or to be fair, can't do well). What you use it for photos or video? (assuming you'd primarily use the 80d when you're not on the go). This could be a good broll cam.

I currently take my GoPro hero 7 if I am planning to get video and can't take my 80d with me but it is rubish for photos and the lens is so wide if you use it to close up to things you get a fair bit of warping but it is just so convenient and it does slowmo and 4k that the 80d doesn't but this might be a nice option to be able to get good photos as well!

If it were me, I would get the M50. It is bigger for sure, and the lens doesn't retract, but the autofocus is a lot better which I prioritize. Since you're going with a creator kit (I can't see any problems you'll have) you're going to use a microphone so it's not a super compact anyway, which makes me lean toward the M50 again. Canon made a huge mistake for not putting dual pixel auto focus in this camera, now is the worse camera in regards auto focus. I am big fan of the G7X Mark II but just because the autofocus of the III , I will not upgrade my Mark II .

Video recording is limited to 30 minutes. Files are broken in segments which is no big deal. You just add them one right after the other. Most of my cameras do that.

Hello! I was unable to copy any files from my canon mark g7x mark ii. So, I transferred the sd card on my phone and connected to the computer. After that i just saw that there is nothing in the memory card. 😭 idk where my files went. Then when I re-entered that sd card to my canon camera it showed "Memory Card Error" 😭 I don't care about the card. But I badly need those files of my memory card. How to recover them. any idea? please please help 😭

Nice video Sagi, I really like your relaxed approach and the way you provide the info. The only thing that I'd omit from this review is the 24fps tantrum. 24fps "cinimatic" view is a myth (won't go into this though). No hybrid camera shoots real 24fps anyway (not A7RIV,A9,R,Z7 etc) since none of them have the double speed exposure needed to do that properly. You want that "cinematic" feel (although no frame rate achives that) and without jitter? Shoot at 25fps (no need to continue to spread the 24p misinformation even if the "crowd" love's it). I can understand the heating issues and for 500$ less then the competition and with a much better lens it is a superb option, However the lack of dpaf in this camera (with dpaf is would be a totally killer camera for a point&shoot option) is what prevents me to buy this one as my wife's second camera. P.S- that built in ND filter option is genius.

Thank you for the thoughtful remark Arthur. I also don't want to get into the whole fps technical discussion. I think we can agree that whether you're shooting with a cam that can do 180 shutter or shooting at 1/50 because it's the best your camera can do, you're still using a slower shutter speed than you would for 30 or 60fps which adds some motion blur. And when you look at 24 vs 30 (even stuff shot on an SL2 (all other things being equal) it "looks" different. I'm not here to say that it looks better or worse, but it does look different. And if someone prefers that look, I don't see a reason why Canon wouldn't offer it (unless they can demonstrate a cost saving on their end which lowers the cost of the camera, or some other reason that benefits the consumer). Because while you could shoot at 25 it's possible that you would run into issues with lighting. My whole point isn't even that I want 24fps (I shoot at 30), it's just that Canon is losing clients by doing this while not gaining anything (that I can see). Heating issues are what they are, but they weren't something I really ran into because it's not how I would use this camera (but I reported them for transparency). It is a lot less expensive than the rx100vii (which I now have and am curious about the comparison) and that lens is so good. lack of DPAF is SO FRUSTRATING!!! I care about nothing else if the image in not in focus. I just did a live show about the 90d which has non-cropped 4k with DPAF (and will soon review it and the M6MK II). That's something I can get behind - although not sure about a DSLR now, since the mirrorless option is essentially identical, but we'll see. I am right there with you 100% - Built-in ND is so good (one of the reasons why I use the cameras I use). Super grateful to have you as part of the community - don't be a stranger.

I wasn't aware prior to youtube that there is a consumer support manufacturers war going on, I wasn't aware that anyone shoots 24fps on hybrid cameras for any reason and that it is a "must" (we here outside of the US don't have that problem we can shoot 25fps 😀), I wasn't aware that you have to "update" to a new camera every year (I had maybe 7 cameras,some simultaneously, over a course of 30 years), I wasnt aware that there is a trent what camera is "cool" to have, I wasn't aware a camera has to have dual card slots to be considered "professional", I wasn't aware that Fuji users became so snobbish (what happened to Hasselblad and Leica users?), I wasn't aware the dslrs are dead, I wasn't aware that a Sony is the camera to get, etc,etc,etc. I lived in the real world..... I don't see a technical reason why Canon (wich is mainly an optic company, using it in sophisticated delicate machinery, satellites etc) started to omit 24fps from their hybrid cameras (if I'm not mistaken they started that gimmick), I would like to believe it's because of professional integrity, but I'm not that naive (maybe they just don't like Americans or Canadians 😀). I agree adding it might gain them more customers, but their market strategy isn't focused on that crowd anyway. P.S: Oops that came out really long , (too much information for sure), sorry for that.

Not that long, info is good. I spoke to someone from Canon USA about omitting 24 and the answer "we have no idea - we've heard nothing from Canon Japan". The reality is that for most people, the gear isn't a limiting factor to begin with and for the most part skill acquisition is undervalued. Being able to shoot at 25 is a great option when possible. I do my best to convey the information I would want to know if I were buying a camera and am honest about what I liked and what I didn't like - while conceding that not everyone has the same wants/needs. Specs are essentially identical - but you get an evf instead of ovf (which you have to buy or get a kit) and of course you'll need an adapter for EF/EF-S

For you it must be Friday afternoon and want to get home . You didn't explain about wifi , Bluetooth regarding videos or can you download videos to Instagram or video to KZbin from the camera, you spent too much time on photos than what you can and can't do with the video camera. Download straight from the camera to social media sites videos, how long does the battery last doing this or can you use wifi when doing this . I'm yet to find a KZbin video on cameras performance that tells everything in black and white without beating around the bush . Same with mobile phone reviews they take 30 minutes plus and even then miss out important information on battery life , wifi download times , download to social media sites using the phone You never mentioned can you edited and add music to the video clips via the camera or do you need a computer with paid software. You mention cannon staff and Friday afternoons , but you are just the same I learnt very little about what this cannon camera can do and not do with videos shot using this camera. 80% was about photos Are the 🎤 microphone extras, what exactly comes with the camera and what are the added extras like sound proof mic is this an extra or is it included in the original price , So many unanswered questions.

I had the first version of the G7X and loved it. I purchased the Mark III just for the mic input. I'm using Roland binaural mics and am very pleased with the sound. I agree with you on the focus issue. It takes a few seconds to adjust and I don't like that part. I have to pan super slow. Thanks for reviewing it.

@Tech Gear Talk Glad to see another manufacturer phasing out 24-fps. I can't imagine why a professional would use a circa 1927 frame rate chosen to support audio recording on celluloid film. Presumably "experts" should know that "cinematic quality" has little to do with framerate and is a combination of lighting, framing, angle, sound quality, editing, story-flow, setting, surroundings, exposure, color-science, and other non-framerate factors related to the final goal of the clip. Also, an expert should know that KZbin does not employ Telecine 3:2 pulldown as streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Disney, et-al. provide for smoothing out 24-fps movies. Shouldn't you know that outside of a 24-fps or 120-fps monitor, standard 30/60-fps monitors (I use a 60-fps gaming monitor) have a math problem with 24-fps? Sadly, your 24-fps videos will have jitter/judder.

I shoot at 30 so this doesn't matter to me. Many others prefer to shoot at 24 because they like the softer look. Some of my friends shoot at 60 because they like that look. None of this really matters because it's a matter of preference. What matters (or what would matter to me if I was Canon) is the number of clients you'll lose for removing a feature some people want (from your entry-level cameras only - mind you) with no explanation or up side.

This was a really useful review. I'm sending myself insane debating between the G7X MkIII, the M50 or M6 MkII. I'm after a compact, but powerful camera for travel/landscape/night/concerts (in a world when we can do all these things again). Previously a Canon Powershot user, about a year ago I bought a Lumix DC-FZ82, for a bigger, better camera but while the image quality is great, it's too heavy and cumbersome and so complex to use.. so I'm looking to refer back to Canon. Thanks for the great review. I was one of those who anxiously waited for this camera release. Upon learning that there is no dual-pixel AF, I switched my interest to the M100 as a compact camera for travel. Granted, this is not as compact as the G7X, but it gets close to point-and-shoot size with the 22mm pancake lens. And if needed, I can use another lens since it's an ILC. So I traded off the size for the AF and APS-C sensor. There's no EVF on M100 but that is the same with G7X. The buttons and dials are kept to a minimum, but Canon's interface is so intuitive that it's extremely simple to change aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. All on the touch screen. Even with the recent M200 release with the eye AF and 4K features, I'm still happy with my M100 for what it brings, which I bought used since it's been out for a while now. That's another bonus in terms of price.

The mark ii has been "enough" for years. The mark iii auto focus was fixed with the last upgrades, but if you are sure you won't want to record better audio, and don't need the latest processor and features, grab a mark ii. What's the price difference?

A bit late but I just bought one, I have a few cameras including drone cameras, disappointed that the volume isn't shown on the screen when recording 4K and my M50 is the same, you just don't know if your wireless system is actually working until you play back. Also the playback volume is quiet and there is no volume control over that. $1,100 here in Australia with a spare battery. The oem charger took 2 hrs to charge one battery and when charged it was quite hot, not a good idea to use till it's cooled down. haven't properly used yet, I like the focus rings ability to change camera perimeters as well with out fiddling with the touch screen. have ordered a screen protector and bag that clips on your belt. Somewhere for my Saramonic transmitter to clip on would be good with out extra attachments, In all it looks to be great. Regards Tony From Australia

People should stop mentioning the dual-px-AF by sony because that technology existed in rx100m7, A6400 and A9. Therefore every camera you have used aside from those sony cameras did not use the dual pixel AF and what difference did you miss or noticed? I have the rx100m3 without the dualAF yet it was fast and responsive, I have the A6400 now but the dualAF is not really a big deal and not really a leap forward for my daily use. By the way, G7xm2 has better jpeg out of cam vs my RX100m3, so this G7xm3 must be way better but the images from rx100m3 are still very good to use even after 5yrs in my PC.

I want a smaller more mobile camera that I can use to shoot tech videos at home for BRoll or family videos. I have been using my iPhone 11 Pro for this currently. Do you recommend the Mark iii for this? Or do you recommend a different camera?

Hi Juan, thanks for watching. Since you're already familiar with the M50, why not get the same setup for home/broll. I know it's a little bigger, but there is a real advantage as far as the process goes. Otherwise, yes, this camera is a good compact solution. I hope this helps.

The reason I style my mkii is that it's not dust resistant. Lots of fuzz in the lens you can't clean off without drilling holes in the side
