Press the "Func." button, it's in the first row of options. "P" for automatic, "Tv" for manual shutter, "Av" for manual aperture. Move over to the manual adjustment you want to change, and press the "Set" button to adjust the value. If you want to adjust the aperture at the same time as the shutter speed, get out of the menus, push the joystick upward, and select the "+/-" settings. This is a relative adjustment, and not an absolute adjustment like in the "Av" mode.

The case is from Lowepro, and I believe it's the Rezo 60 model. It's long enough to hold the camcorder with the higher capacity BP-819 battery.

I owned this Canon HF200 for several years and it helped me create 100's of decent looking videos. I now own the Canon G30 after I broke the screen on the HF200. At the time, the HF200 created high quality video which was all I wanted from it. For its size, it was a great little camcorder.

If you need tightly focused sound, definitely the Rode shotgun mike. But be warned you'll need to lower the bass and increase the treble in post-processing. The mic is a bit aggressive in the low-end and weak in the high-end. Avoid using in windy conditions. For outdoor sound recordings, and in situation where you'll want more ambient sounds around you, try the Rode Stereo Videomic. Don't forget the shoe adapter from DM-Accessories.

@stingoh No. It's 15x. You might have gotten your models mixed up. There's no HS 200 model out there, but there is a higher quality and more expensive HF S200 model available which does have a 10x optical zoom. This review however is for the HF200 model.

A Canon HV20. And I'm glad I won't need it anymore except for backup purposes. It's much easier and less time consuming to copy files off a handful of memory cards than it is to transfer everything via firewire in real time. You could spend a whole day just transferring over a few tapes! I now carry the HF200 with me everywhere I go. Even the built-in microphone is good enough in a pinch.

It's not a mechanical hard drive. It's actually flash memory, the same kind of memory as found in SD memory cards. But Canon charges you MUCH more for it than what it would normally cost you to purchase the same amount in the form of a single SDHC card. Aside from the built-in memory, both camcorders are exactly the same.

I'm still searching for one. In fact, I wished Canon had produced a 720p version of their HF200 packaged in a FS200 body. I have an FS100, and I'm still amazed at how practical it is despite being only DVD resolution.

Maybe not. Locate the manuals for the computer (or at the very least the motherboard), and check which processors it supports. It's entirely possible the board already supports a specific line of quad-core processors. And with any luck, it might not be too expensive. Good luck!

CMS_FLAT for the small one, CMS_CUBE for the large one, available in black or silver. The large one not only has a shoe mount on top, it also has four shoe mounts on the sides. They're really well made, which is a good thing since they're also the only manufacturer I've found that makes these adapters.

You can pretty much leave it on full automatic i.e. "P" mode. That's how all of the daytime shots were recorded in the video.

I just use the DVD Architect Studio software that came with my Vegas Platinum. Project->Make Movie, Burn to DVD. Vegas will automatically render the files in the proper format. You might have to experiment with the deinterlacing setting in your project properties to find the one that works best for you.

I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition. It has most of the capabilities of Sony Vegas Pro, but at a fifth of the cost. Even with its limitations (48K/16 bit sound, max. 4 audio and video tracks, basic deinterlacing options), it's surprising how much you can get out of the package. Make sure you get the Platinum edition (grey box). The basic edition (orange box) won't do HD.

Check the video description. You'll find a BitTorrent link to the grain elevator zoom test MTS file. The microphone jack is a standard 1/8 inch/3.5 mm stereo jack. It isn't a custom jack. Any camcorder microphone equipped with a standard stereo 1/8 inch/3.5 mm headphone plug should work.

Cine mode is a weird setting that does weird things to the image. I haven't figured out how to properly exploit it yet. All daytime shots were filmed in "P" mode. The settings for most of the nighttime shots are identified in the video. Those that aren't identified were recorded in the "P" mode.

The current version is the HV40. You'll HAVE to use an external microphone. The internal mic picks up way too much camera noise.

1) If you render the final video at 1280x720, not only will the video still look good, you can also play it on an Atom processor based netbook. 2) Try the manual focus. With no menus on the screen, press the down direction on the joystick. That will list extra features including the auto/manual focus selector. It's the logo that looks like a circle split in two and shifted vertically on one side. Good luck!

If you're using an HDMI cable, your TV might deinterlace everything for you. That's one of the bigger issues today. There are so many formats, deinterlacers and video filters in so many devices out there, it's nearly impossible to know in advance how a particular video format will look on a particular device unless you plug it in and see what happens.

I guess that model would be THIS HF200 or HF20 - (many people seem to be comparing this to the XActi lately). I just like the grip style (and the wider range of HD & slow mo formats) on the HD2000 - looks useful? Another (non comparable) item you might want to review is the Zoom Q3 (hi-fi audio recorder with simple video)

I don't know. If the lens hood isn't too expensive, it might be worth a shot. For protecting the lens itself, I just use a 37mm UV filter. But that can cause reflections at night from all the car headlights.

A .mts container. Far from the most recognized container out there. I'm aware that some people are having trouble using it with their NLE software such as Final Cut. Sony Vegas starting at version 9 however has no trouble handling the files natively, but you do need a quad core machine to be able to work efficiently.

A Canon HV20. It's now a backup camcorder. I don't like to use tapes anymore. I already lost footage from one of my Asus reviews when the tape failed to retain the recording. I had to reshoot the lost scenes. Good thing this didn't happen while I was on vacation!

@MrE2727 Yep. The M300 is its direct model replacement of the HF200. It's major difference is the new touchscreen which I can't stand.

AVCHD, which is basically MPEG4 H.264. Extremely clean, but also extremely demanding on computer resources. You need a minimum quad-core machine to play the raw files properly. The audio is recorded in 2 channel 256 kbps Dolby Digital. More than enough for decent sound.
@TheCanadianPublic
@TheCanadianPublic 14 жыл бұрын
It depends on the software you use to view and edit the footage. Your best bet might be to use the 30P mode, labeled as PF30 in the menus. In Sony Vegas Platinum, I don't need to deinterlace a PF30 source to make it look progressive. The software seem to figure it out all on its own. Can you bring an empty memory card to the store and record some footage in each mode before buying? Make sure you pan the camcorder quickly enough to make the interlaced image "comb."
@TheCanadianPublic
@TheCanadianPublic 12 жыл бұрын
Two words. Sony Vegas. That's what I use, but be prepared for a very steep learning curve! If however you're only interested in reducing the size and resolution of your videos and not edit them, try Handbrake. Make sure to set the decomb (and not deinterlace) filter to Default. Good luck!

The TH1 is already 16:9. It can only become 4:3 if you use the lower resolution video settings. Thanks for the compliment! I still have to practice my dictation though. My pronunciation of "Videomics" (in plural) is coming out as "Videomites". If it's singular however, it comes out okay. I need a book of tongue twisters. :)

This is what I usually look for. - Minimum 15x zoom. - Front facing built-in microphones. - 256 kbps audio recording (makes a HUGE difference). - Can record with the LCD screen closed. - External microphone jack (I need it, you might not). - Low frame rate options (helps with night shoots). - SD memory support (use the built-in memory as a "spare tank"). - A decent interface (doesn't exist, lol!).

@stingoh I disqualified the HF S200 from review consideration because 1) it's expensive, 2) it's a bit big for one's hand, and 3) it has side-mounted microphones. Hint: where is the sound coming from? :) As for the zoom, the difference between 10X and 15X is only 1.5X. (10 times 1.5 equals 15). Unless you're spying on someone, the extra reach might not be important to you. If the camcorder is in good condition, I'd say go ahead and take a chance! That price is a real steal for what it can do!

Yep, although the program does have one bug. It can't properly render the audio track in high bitrate/high bandwidth mp3 format. So I render the video with raw audio, and use VirtualDub to convert ONLY the audio track to mp3. Then again, maybe I'm simply using the wrong filter. I should try ffdshow instead of LAME. You can download and try a free 30 day evaluation copy of Vegas before shelling out the money for it.

I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition. Actually, Platinum Pro-Pack which includes many NewBlueFX special effects packages. Platinum includes high definition support as well as most of the basic features of the more expensive pro version. Its main drawback is that you're limited to four audio and four video tracks. But you learn to work around that along with its inability to render a high bitrate mp3 audio track. I use VirtualDub to convert the raw audio track to mp3.

Definitely! Don't even think of compromising on quality! It might only give you 40 minutes of recording time on a single 8 GB card, but at $10-$20 per FULLY REUSABLE card with no worry about "tape degradation", the total recording time is almost limitless. One thing you definitely won't miss is the enormous time spent transferring the footage from the HV20 to your computer. Now it's down to a simple copy operation. My HV20 is now very sad. :)

It's not that bad especially if you use the manual settings and maybe experiment with the Cinema mode. To be honest, there's a lot of sites out there that expect these cameras to behave like night vision scopes. The low light tests I've performed were done under conditions where I could hardly see anything myself in real life! It was that dark! I was impressed that the camera could record anything at all!

Only one. There can be a bit of hiss on the audio track, especially when you're recording in a quiet environment. It's not a problem for me since I often have to tone down the high frequencies anyway, so the problem goes away on its own. But it is a detail I overlooked when I originally reviewed the camcorder.

@GringotheHunter Recording fewer frames per second *usually* means the image sensor is given a bit more time to capture each and every frame, resulting in more light hitting the sensor. The more light the sensor can gather for each frame, the clearer the image will be in low light. I say *usually* because it's not impossible for a poorly designed camcorder to NOT exploit this extra time to improve the picture.

Unfortunately, I don't know. I've never used a Mac. But if the performance is anything like my 2.66 GHz dual-core PCs, you'll be able to work with the files, but it'll be a bit slow. The sluggishness might also make you miss a few critical edit points, forcing you to correct the mistakes and redo the render. Don't wait until the last minute to finish your project. Give yourself some maneuvering room just in case.
@TheCanadianPublic
@TheCanadianPublic 15 жыл бұрын
The problem is not with the files or the software. The problem is with your computer! You'll need to upgrade to a quad-core model if you absolutely need smooth playback. If your Sony Vegas is the Platinum edition, you're okay with that. That's what I use, and I'm very happy with the results.

The old system on which I edited the video was a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo system.And while it was fine for editing HDV material from my old Canon HV20, it simply couldn't handle the files from the HF200. But as soon as I upgraded to a 2.8 GHz Quad Core system, all of my HF200 problems disappeared. I didn't want to take the chance that a more powerful dual core system would still not be able to handle the files, so I went straight to a Quad Core system. And I'm glad I did.

To perform an actual comparison, you should look to compare camcorders with similar specs. In this case, the FH1 from Sanyo makes more sense. 1080p at 60p frames top setting, good low light performance, but with similar focusing issues as seen with the TH1- still making it a good budget-conscious 1080p camcorder, and very light too,

Search for Canon WD-H37 and Canon TL-H37. About $190 for the wide-angle adapter, and about $110 for the telephoto adapter. Of the two, the WD-H37 wide-angle adapter will be the most useful, especially if your shooting locations consist of a lot of small rooms. :)

The BP-808 and BP-809 are EXACTLY THE SAME. The only difference is the BP-809 is shaped to hug the back of the camcorder for a cleaner look. The BP-808 is a bit shorter, so it won't rest flush with the back, but the recess is perfect as a thumb rest! Other compatible batteries are the BP-819 at twice the capacity, and the BP-827 at three times the capacity, However, the 827 sticks out about three inches from the camcorder body!

I play my raw videos either with Zoom Player or VLC Media Player. Both packages include deinterlacers which, depending on the computer system, may have to be turned on manually. As for exactly which camcorders out there record in true progressive, I have no idea. Trying to get exact specifications from the manufacturers is nearly impossible.

I use Sony Vegas Platinum to edit and render all of my videos to XviD video and uncompressed audio format AVI files. I then use VirtualDub to convert the uncompressed audio to MP3 where perfect sound isn't a necessity. I'm still having trouble figuring out Sony Vegas' deinterlacing component. It really doesn't do a very good job. But if you record your videos in PF30 mode, you don't need to deinterlace the source material, and it looks fantastic.

I'd like to correct myself; I hadn't realized that it was the same mic with a wind filter attached. I did some searching, and found that it retails for $150 US. Is it worth it, in your opinion? I plan to use the HF200 for film production, so I don't want to let money to go waste.

Actually, it is. The one major problem with the Canon is its 1920x1080 high resolution format. It's a huge battery drain, uses up a lot of storage space, and requires a very powerful computer to edit the footage. A 1280x720 resolution camcorder however can still deliver an excellent picture, will have a longer battery life, use less storage space, and doesn't require a super computer to edit the footage. Unfortunately, the Sanyo's picture quality ruined any chance it had to be a contender.

How did you do it with the HV20? Aside from a slight difference in the resolution, both are still 60i HD camcorders. Whatever technique you already use for the HV20 SHOULD also work for the HF200. I figure it's all a matter of recording at the highest possible frame rate and shutter speed in order to properly immobilize the action.

For true professional results, use a professional shotgun microphone mounted on a boom, with the microphone pointing DOWNWARDS so that it only picks up the speaker and nothing else. The recording should be made on a separate device, preferably one with an XLR connection to minimize noise. The Rode microphones shown in the video will also work, but they do have their limitations, one of them being the cable can't be longer than what's already included otherwise you'll get lots of hiss.

Find a store that has powered demos of both camcorders, and bring two Class 4 (minimum) memory cards with you. Record some footage at maximum quality in the store, bring the cards home, and compare them on your computer. This is the only way to get a clear picture of the FH1's actual performance. You can even compare the footage with my KZbin video as long as you disregard the frame rate, which KZbin still can't handle properly.

I have two Intel 775 based dual core 2.66 GHz computers, one with a 1333 MHz bus speed and 4 MB L2 cache, and another with a 1066 MHz bus speed and 3 MB L2 cache. Only the computer with the 1333 MHz bus speed can play back the raw video files flawlessly -- most of the time. BOTH computers will drop frames during the editing process, but they still can produce a properly rendered video although that can take a bit of time to complete. The rendered video will play properly on both computers.

The editing process will be slow, and the final rendering extremely long, but it can be done. It just won't be a very pleasant experience. Have you considered plugging the camcorder to a big screen TV via HDMI? That would immediately solve the viewing problems. You'll need a cable with a regular sized HDMI connector at one end, and a compact HDMI connector at the other end. Try Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cable. Avoid Monster like the plague.

Out of curiosity, when are you planning to purchase the camcorder? If you can find the HF200 for about $500, not only might it be worth it, there might also be a way for you to cheat. It came to me when I purchased the Canon HF R10 for an upcoming review, and I was trying to figure out how to optimize its use considering the image sensor is LESS than 1920x1080 pixels. The technique I'll be using on the HF R10 could also be used on the HF200. More on this in my upcoming HF R10 review.

Are you planning to upload the raw footage directly on KZbin? If so, you might not need to deinterlace anything. KZbin's encoders should do it for you. However, I've never tried to upload raw footage on KZbin; I always edit my stuff first. So I don't know if KZbin can handle raw MTS/M2T files.

What's the model number of your processor? If it supports hyperthreading, you might need to disable it in the BIOS. I've had big problems with it when rendering videos. You'll also need to go into the options page of Vegas and set the number of threads to a minimum of 2. Finally, are you using a proper video card in your rig? Some on-board video chips can't handle hi-def video. It doesn't have to be a high-end card though. Something like an ATI 4350 will do fine. Good luck!

$200 Canadian for the Sanyo, $800 Canadian for the Canon. The Canon was newly released when I bought it. Ah, the disadvantages of being an early adopter. :) Luckily, the best price I can find for the HF200 today is $700, both from Canadian and USA retailers and e-tailers, including shipping charges and exchange rates. So I'm only out $100. On the plus side, I had purchased a bunch of 8 GB SDHC cards last Boxing Day for only $10 each! So it all balances out.

Great Review!! Very imformative! I just picked up the HF200 and have started filming some new episodes with it. I'm curious tho, what settings would you recommend for slow motion, or video you wanted to slow down in post? I'm having trouble determining the best settings to use for this little guy. Works better with my HV20.

ok thats fine for me because i could use programs to edit that hiss sound. Also when the footage is deinterlaced with sony vegas for example, is there ghosting. If there is, is it noticable especially with fast moving scenes.

I've just added a BitTorrent link to an original 24 Mbps H.264 AVCHD camcorder clip in the show notes. The clip is the Old Montreal grain elevator zoom test.

It's a Canon HV20, a tape based HDV camcorder. The image quality is still fantastic even by today's standards, but it's heavy, the on-board mic picks up way too much noise from the tape mechanism, and transferring the footage to a computer in real time is a huge time waster. I now use the HV20 only whenever the HF200 isn't available or practical.

how in the world do you get such good quality ): i have the same cannon hf200 and use iMovie to export. but do you know how i could achieve the same quality in imovie? every time i try to upload to youtube it really turns out bad! even when i apply a 1080p format through imovie.

Once the final render is completed and you compress the uncompressed PCM audio track with VirtualDub (Sony Vegas can't do MP3 audio tracks properly), you end up with an XviD/MP3 AVI fiie which can then be upload directly to KZbin. I don't use Movie Maker at all. There's no point.

ok thanks for all your answers, i just have 2 more questions (sigh) lol, 1) If my computer is not good enough to play the files, and i render a video with the files in sony vegas, will the final video be laggy or skippy, will there be any disadvantages to the video quality to someone with a computer better suited for the camera....?

Check out the show notes. You'll find a link to a camcorder sample clip which you can download via BitTorrent. You can try that on MovieMaker to see if it works or not. Some advice on filming a wedding. If you've never filmed such an important event in your life, don't do it. Hire professionals instead. Otherwise, you'll lose a LOT of friends overnight!
