You can't compare a proper camera (like this one) and a camera in a phone. IXUS takes proper high resolution photos, without the need for digital interpolation*. It also has a physical zoom lens. Phones don't have a physical zoom lens. Phone photos can look great, at first, but if you load up a photo from a phone vs. a photo from a stand-alone camera, such as an IXUS, in a photo editor, such as Paint Shop Pro (as I have done), then tell the program to "find all edges", you'll see a grid pattern in the phone photo, but a smooth photo in the stand-alone photo. That shows the phone photo has a lot of digital interpolation. *Digital interpolation is literally when a photo has been expanded to make it appear as if it's a higher resolution than it has. The gaps between the pixels are filled with more pixels that are an average of their surrounding pixels. That's how digital zoom works. 2x digital zoom means half the pixels are not what the camera photographed. 3x digital zoom means 2/3 of the pixels are made up, etc. (I may have those numbers slightly wrong, but it's something along those lines.)

Smartphones are great compact cameras for wide angle and normal shots. For any telephoto shots this camera beats the smartphone and is much easier to carry than even a micro 4/3 camera. Most people already have the smart phone on their person. This kind of camera is an excellent supplement to the smartphone camera. If you want to blur the background then you either have to carry a large camera or use software post processing to blur the background. It is really silly the way smartphones are marketed as cameras. When a smartphone camera is advertised as 48mp, it will really deliver 12mp, which is really more than you usually need. In film camera days I used to often carry a Minolta 16mm subcompact camera. That cannot begin to compete with a modern smartphone camera but the camera you have in your pocket is often better than no camera.

for me, I prefer the look of the canon camera, I have a powershot elph 135, it's older than the one you use, but it's better for me than the new android phones or even the iphone, why? because the quality of the picture using the smart phone is too enhanced, and the sharpness seems to be cheating
@the_daniel_life5 ай бұрын
I understand your preference for the look of the photos from your Canon PowerShot ELPH 135. Many people appreciate the natural and less processed appearance of photos taken with dedicated cameras compared to those from smartphones, which often apply heavy processing for sharpness, color enhancement, and noise reduction. ### Why Photos from Canon Cameras Might Appeal More 1. **Natural Image Quality:** - Compact cameras like the Canon PowerShot ELPH 135 tend to produce images with more natural colors and less aggressive sharpening compared to smartphones. 2. **Optical Zoom:** - The optical zoom in dedicated cameras provides better quality magnification without the digital artifacts that come from smartphone digital zoom. 3. **Sensor Size and Optics:** - Even though the ELPH 135 has a small sensor, it still benefits from dedicated optics designed for photography, which can result in more pleasing image characteristics. 4. **Less Software Processing:** - Smartphones often use aggressive software processing to enhance images, which can sometimes make photos look unnatural or over-processed. Cameras like the Canon PowerShot ELPH 135 typically apply minimal processing, preserving more of the original scene's detail and texture. ### How to Maximize the Benefits of Your Canon Camera 1. **Use Manual Settings:** - If your camera has manual settings, experiment with them to get the best results for different lighting conditions. Adjusting ISO, shutter speed, and white balance can help you capture better images. 2. **Post-Processing:** - Consider doing some post-processing yourself using software like Adobe Lightroom or even free tools like GIMP. This allows you to control the level of enhancement and sharpening to match your personal taste. 3. **Optimal Lighting:** - Use good lighting conditions to your advantage. Natural light can greatly enhance the quality of your photos without the need for additional processing. 4. **Composition and Framing:** - Focus on your composition and framing skills. The fundamentals of good photography can often outweigh the technical limitations of an older camera. ### Why Smartphone Photos May Seem "Cheating" 1. **Artificial Intelligence (AI):** - Modern smartphones use AI to detect scenes and optimize settings automatically, which can result in very sharp and vibrant images that may not always reflect the natural look of the scene. 2. **HDR and Computational Photography:** - High Dynamic Range (HDR) and computational photography techniques combine multiple exposures to create a single image with enhanced details and colors, which can sometimes look unrealistic. 3. **Aggressive Noise Reduction:** - Smartphones often apply heavy noise reduction, which can make images look smoother but also reduce fine details. ### Conclusion While smartphones have made significant advancements in camera technology, they often prioritize enhancements that may not appeal to everyone. Your Canon PowerShot ELPH 135 provides a more natural and true-to-life image quality that you prefer, and it's perfectly valid to continue using it for your photography needs. By focusing on good photography practices and possibly engaging in some light post-processing, you can continue to produce high-quality images that match your personal aesthetic.

I have been thinking about getting one for the longest time. For me, is simply for one use, that is to take some decent shots when I go fishing and document my catches. I was expecting it to be better than my smartphone, but is it? Plus, is probably better to handle a camera more than a smartphone if your hands may be wet. I mean it is small and arguably more rugged than my smartphone, I can just keep it together with my fishing gear in my tackle box for example. At least, that was my thinking, good idea or you still think just stick with the smartphone?
@the_daniel_life2 ай бұрын
The Canon IXUS 285 can be a good choice for your needs, but there are a few things to consider to determine if it is indeed better than your smartphone for fishing and documenting your catches. ### **Advantages of the Canon IXUS 285:** 1. **Dedicated Camera Features:** The IXUS 285 is a compact point-and-shoot camera with a 12x optical zoom, which gives it an edge over most smartphones in zooming capabilities without losing image quality. This can be particularly useful for capturing distant subjects, such as fish in the water or details of a scenic background while fishing. 2. **Portability and Handling:** It's small, lightweight, and easy to carry in your tackle box, as you mentioned. Its compact design also means it’s less likely to slip out of your hand compared to a larger smartphone, especially if your hands are wet or dirty. 3. **Battery Life:** Dedicated cameras like the IXUS 285 tend to have better battery life for photography than smartphones. You won’t need to worry about draining your phone’s battery while taking pictures, which can be crucial when you’re out on a long fishing trip. 4. **Ruggedness:** While the IXUS 285 isn’t a rugged or waterproof camera, it is still likely to be more durable than most smartphones. It's more resistant to the minor bumps and scrapes that can happen during fishing. You could pair it with a small, protective case to further increase its resilience against drops or splashes. ### **Considerations for Sticking with Your Smartphone:** 1. **Image Quality and Versatility:** Many modern smartphones (especially mid to high-end models) now have excellent camera sensors and software optimization that can outperform point-and-shoot cameras like the IXUS 285, particularly in terms of low-light performance, dynamic range, and ease of editing/sharing. 2. **Convenience and Multifunctionality:** Your smartphone is always with you and serves multiple functions (camera, GPS, communication, apps, etc.). It’s convenient to use a single device rather than carry an extra camera. Plus, you can instantly share your photos or videos on social media directly from your phone. 3. **Waterproofing and Rugged Cases:** If you’re concerned about using your smartphone in wet conditions, you might consider getting a rugged, waterproof case for it. This way, you can safely use your phone in challenging environments and benefit from its superior camera technology. ### **Conclusion:** If your primary use case is capturing fishing moments and you prefer a small, dedicated device that you can toss in your tackle box without much worry, the IXUS 285 could be a good fit. However, if your smartphone already has a high-quality camera, and you don’t mind using it with a rugged case, it might be better to stick with your smartphone for convenience and better image quality. Ultimately, it boils down to whether you want the simplicity and dedicated functionality of the IXUS 285 or the versatility and convenience of your smartphone.
